July 350 Blocks Report

Posted on July 31, 2023 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Well, that’s a wrap!

I managed to get 87 blocks made this month. My Sticky Buns Challenge really helped, but I will say that I mostly used the challenge to do things like set blocks together and to do things I would normally procrastinate on, so any blocks that came from it are bonus!

I made two more blocks for my Pineapple quilt, with a third one so close to finished:

I counted each row of my Hexie quilt as a block, and had 9 of those left to put together this month. I’m also counting each row of my Blue Twist Tie quilt as a block, and I got all 26 of them put together and am now working on sewing the rows together, so I should have a finished top soon!

I made another Improv Herringbone block, and have another one of those real close to finished as well:

I made some Snowballs, some 9-patches, a few Maple Leaves, and I’m working on 4 different mystery quilts, so I had plenty of things to work on!

We had some stellar heat here the last couple weeks, so it was good to just stay in and sew. How about you? Did the weather keep you indoors? I know some of you are in winter on the other side of the planet, and some of you are having even worse heat than we are here in Missouri. I’m not complaining about it too much, tho, because I clearly remember being so dang cold last winter that I had to sit at my computer with a stocking hat and gloves on while wearing two hoodies! And that is gonna come back around soon enough . . .

It’s time to report in with your July totals. I’ve updated the Project page as of today, so double-check me and make sure I’m not cheating you out of any blocks!

Our monthly goal for August is 15 blocks, for a year-to-date total of 212. I’m taking it easy on us this month, because I have a feeling August will be very busy for some of us. And the reason I chose the number 15 is because my sweet kitty, Gidget, is celebrating her 15th birthday on August 3rd.

I took her to the vet last week for a checkup, and other than having to get her ears doctored for mites (which she is super prone to), she’s the picture of health in her old age, so I hope she has several good years left. She’s missing a few teeth (which makes me wonder what happened to them), so she’s been switched to canned food for her main meals so she doesn’t have to try to crunch the dry food any more. She doesn’t mind that at all!

The prize winner for June is Patti H., with 195 blocks to her credit so far this year — she’s right on track! Patti is a special friend of our dog, Tucker. She was his shelter buddy before we adopted him. He was very lucky to have her.

I hope you all have a lovely stitchy month of August! Stay cool out there (or warm, as the case may be).

July seemed like it flew by. 2 quilt blocks. Yes, two. I did get married, entertained my mom in law and my brother in law on separate weekends, helped change a transmission in a truck, begin moving, removed drywall and lathe from my new living room ceiling, get and began raising meat chicks along with my normal daily life. Tired yet?! I have high hopes for August though.

  2. Diana S says:

You did great on your blocks. And Happy Birthday to Gidget. I managed sewing this month. more than I had for awhile. Yes very hot here so it was good staying inside. I finished my Scrap Dance Quadrille. That was 13 blocks. 36 -9 patch blocks- border for my scrappy rail fence. I spent sometime going through some plastic containers- found some waste HSTS from snowball blocks and other projects. Found quite a few pinwheel blocks plus the sets of 4 for more. Got those sewn so another 18 blocks. Total for the month of July–67!

  3. Paula M Mo says:

I had 105 4 patch blocks before getting sick!
Next month I hope for a variety.

  4. Rose says:

I made 32 blocks for My Favorite Color is Moda which is now a flimsy. 10 Stack N Whack blocks and that completes all of them. It’s now ready to be a flimsy. And only 15 leader/ender blocks. For a total of only 57. August will be worse than that, I’m afraid. We are taking a road trip for the month.

  5. Carissa says:

Sounds like you had a great month! So glad that your challenge helped. My sewing space tends to be quite warm in the summer, and my iron needs to be plugged in on a different floor (oh, the challenges of an old house!), so I don’t usually get as much done this time of year. But I have some quilts that must be done by the middle of August, so that has been a good motivator. I sewed 82 blocks in July, so a good month for me!

  6. dq says:

Ok, mega inspiration here! I am so going to make a braid or a pineapple scrappy quilt!! Love them!
In July I made 32 blocks which should bring my YTD up to 334.

  7. Wanda Marvel says:

    00 blocks🙁😵‍💫

  8. Pam Desilets says:

    Hi All,
I completed 60 blocks. I completed 2 scrape quilts. Each having 5 x 6 12inch blocks. I will be teaching in September. Love to hear everyone’s sewing notes.

  9. Ioleen says:

I fell and broke a bone in my arm so I didn’t get all done that I wanted to. I did get a table runner done with 8 blocks and I did get 20 of 25 blocks done for the Bingo QAL. Total for July 28. I start physio in early August so I will probably have 0 blocks for August. I so miss my sewing room. 😢😢

  10. 153 blocks for me.
Sewing buddies are the best. My ‘Tasha (Natasha) lived 18+ years before she started having issues (had to put her down last year)–such a long time for a cat. I still have “Chloe”, a calico who is about 10 now but she has never been quite the sewing buddy that Tasha was.

  11. Louise says:

96 sixteen patches for me this month. I was thrilled to get them done since I had a lot of company in July and will have even more in August.

  12. ChrisGG says:

I managed 91 blocks this month. Also made 3 tops for charity, layered, quilted and bound. I only do bindings by machine now as it’s so much faster and holds up better for “donated” quilts.

    • Bev C. says:

I stopped hand sewing binding a few years ago for the same reasons. Once you’ve mastered the technique, it makes it hard to go back to hand turning.

      • Ginny says:

I’m not sure but the 82 blocks I finished may be a record. Finished 2 tops (one double and one just a small wall hanging from left overs from the first quilt) and 36 blocks for the 3rd one. Just borders to go. August and Sept may not be many or any.
Stay in where it is cooler. Very hot and dry here.

      • Ginny says:

Sorry about writing in the wrong place.
I have not sewed any part of binding by hand in a long time. I started from the beginning sewing all by machine. Done a few by hand later but today back to by machine. Mostly I hand sew on the final part of hanging sleeves

        • Bev C. says:

I rarely do hanging sleeves and rarely sew anything by hand. When I make labels I do a square and fold in half and sew the raw edges under the binding. then all I need to do is whip stitch the folded edge to the back of the quilt. I just started machine sewing bindings a few years ago but have been quilting over 30 years. Most of my quilts are throw size and donated.

  13. Wendy says:

Only 12 for me, but in my defense, I was working on a challenge quilt that had no blocks but lots of little bits of fabric!

  14. Bev C. says:

I also did 87 blocks this month but also sandwiched and quilted 3 quilts and made 4 quilted shawls to be used for warmth during chemo sessions. So, I’m happy with that.

  15. Fran says:

Hope Gidget lives to be 23 years old. That is how long my last two cats lived. Gidget is absolutely adorable! My count of blocks for July is 128. I did get 2 quilts ready for the long arm quilter.

  16. Dianne D says:

Lucky 13 for me this month. I’m pleased I got that many done. Happy sewing!

  17. Crystal F says:

50 Quilts of Valor Split Star blocks all finished.

  18. Deanna says:

Add 58 more for me this month. Not bad for a busy July. And my count looks just right on the project page, or, at least we agree if we are wrong. Try to stay cool.

  19. Suelynn Williams says:

I hope you’ll post your mystery quilts when finished! Kitties are the best sewing buddies. This month I’ve been binding since I’m always starting something new before I completely finish something else! This month I made 13 blocks.

  20. Phillis Harding says:

Only 17 blocks this month. I have been busy quilting. I got 16 quilts quilted and binding applied by machine. Only 35 left to layer, quilt and bind until completed. I have 4 quilts in progress and am making blocks for them as a warm up in between quilting. Trying not to start anymore until I get these done. Lol! Your herringbone quilt is very tempting.

  21. Kerry says:

Awww Gidget, so sweet and I see right in the way on your cutting mat! LOL!

So I finished my Irish star blocks – 15 sewn (already had 9) and while I haven’t finished the all the chain blocks needed, I churned out 18 (5 already done) – grand total of 32. Yay!

    • Tonia says:

I heard yesterday that my Irish Star is quilted! It is king sized so I have a mammoth binding job ahead of me! Daughter #2 asked that I make it with a bit of as many different fabrics as possible. I don’t have one of everything in the Mountain of Stash, lots of repeats but so fun to make! The oldest pieces are from a dress I made in 1962! (Someone needs to clean house—but it is so fun to remember!). Does anyone else use the MOS as a trip down memory lane?

      • Bev C. says:

I make scrap quilts and a lot of my stuff is cut into squares and put away. When I’m making something with these pre-cuts, I think of some of the quilts made with some of the fabrics that show up. Just came across fabric used in one of my son’s quilts made 20 years ago. Yes, definitely memory lane.

  22. Well, July has been a bust for me. Between a trip to visit my brother back East and preparing a property tax appeal after outrageous increases by our county, I got a new record of “0” …yes zero…blocks done this month. Counting on the next few months to make up for it! 😄

  23. Moira says:

My total for July is 44 blocks. 42 were rail fence blocks made at the beginning of the month, so super easy.

The other 2 were made during workshops at MaineQuilts this past week: a block for Blair Stoker’s Starflake quilt and a handpieced block for Jen Kingwell’s Clopin Cushion.

The rest of the month has been working on my guild’s summer mastery so nothing counts, yet…

  24. Sharon Gratz says:

I was able to make 33 blocks in July. My sister and I enjoyed our in-house quilt retreat at my house in Florida. We got the wedding top completed so she could drop it off at my quilter’s house in Alabama as she headed toward her home in the Chicago area. Talk about sticky buns!!!! lol

  25. Ginny says:

I’m not sure but the 82 blocks I finished may be a record. Finished 2 tops (one double and one just a small wall hanging from left overs from the first quilt) and 36 blocks for the 3rd one. Just borders to go. August and Sept may not be many or any.
Stay in where it is cooler. Very hot and dry here.

  26. Kathy says:

Managed to do 26 blocks this month. I’ve been working on some tote bags made from dog food bags and pull toys for the pet adoption center.

  27. Linda Knight says:

I pieced 2 very simple quilt tops so counted only 5 blocks, but I was able to quilt and bind 5 small quilts also.

  28. Ginabeth says:

I had 22 blocks. Mostly I put bindings and sleeves on 3 quilts to show at the county Fair. Was glad to add to my finished list for 2023📍

Thank you for keeping the count going❣️ We had hot weather here, nice to stay inside and sew.

  29. Paula Mu says:

I got 135 blocks made this month. Lots of different projects. 3 Jacqueline Steves blocks, 30 Diamond Daze blocks, 13 sunflower blocks, 4 Quadrille blocks, 41 blocks for Days Filled with Joy mystery, 25 Evergreen blocks and 24 Celebration blocks. I am pretty happy with my progress this month.

  30. Beverly V. says:

Happy Birthday to Gidget. I hope she has a great day. I have no blocks to count, as I am on my long road trip. I did get to work on designing my quilt on the computer, so when I get back hopefully I can start cutting and sewing.

  31. Shirley Guier says:

I have 25 blocks for last month. I spent time trying to get pickle dish quilted and I’m almost there.

  32. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Only 41 blocks for me. Have another top to finish then off to quilting the 4 tops that are done. Slowly getting things done.

  33. Beverly says:

I did 21 this month! I also got some finished tops and backings made! I hate piecing backing, but I did it!!

  34. KT says:

42 blocks for me in July. I finished a quilt, and started a new one that I’ve been eyeing for a long time. We’ve got a busy August, so may not get much sewing done, but we’ll be having fun!

  35. Aileen says:

Well I finally sewed. I made 40 blocks. Its a start!

  36. Joan says:

53 blocks done this month, with one top finished and a baby quilt bound. I also got a big quilt pinned for quilting, which I hope to get to this month. It’s a late graduation present. The good thing is that I did not start anything new this month!

  37. Marlene Clausen says:

0 for July. It was a very busy month. I quilted one quilt, made 3 sock monkeys, pieced a jelly roll race, and a did bunch of small sewing projects. Sometimes finishing takes priority over piecing. This month should be much better. Am going to piece a QOV before I start quilting another top and have a BOM mystery quilt starting in one day. Beyond that, I hope to get another UFO top under the needle. Lots of new projects beckon me; but, my top priority all year is UFO reduction.

  38. Rose Marie Smith says:

Good thing we write this down. Otherwise I don’t think I would believe how many blocks I made this month. I did 160 blocks. But I have to admit that the hardest block I did was only 8 and the easiest block was 112. And the 112 easy blocks have a purpose………for a friend’s Christmas plans. How nice July was!! Thanks for listening to this.

  39. Ceil Podzimek says:

I had a total of 30 blocks for July. 5 were for a row x row with my guild; the other 25 were all for the Jen Kingwell Green Tea and Sweet Beans sew-a-long with the Virtual Textile Community group I belong to. We have such great meetings on zoom and there are always new challenges and tons of ideas tossed around.

  40. Marsha P says:

76 blocks for me this month.

  41. kit glenz says:

you go Gidget!! the mistress of moral support. we should all have one.

  42. Susan S. says:

only 14 blocks for me this month but the good news is that they werent random pinwheels as I have been doing! I was working on making flying geese, then turned them into star blocks. love your pineapple blocks!

  43. denniele says:

385 blocks this month. Finishing those two temperature quilts really added up quickly. No more of them until next year!! You were busy!!

  44. Marilyn Holder says:

Total blocks for July: 93, finishing a quilt top. Now for borders and backing and stuff in the middle!

  45. July Post shows a total of 158 for the month. I don’t know if I’ve ever done so many in one month! Lots of starts and finishes, and some fun blocks. That gives me a total for the year of 543. Thanks so much for running this, because I would way underestimate how much quilting I’m doing! You did really well this month, too!

  46. Barb Roberts says:

    Hi Shelly,
I made 20 blocks for a pattern test in July and 20 basket blocks for June. It would appear that I am a month behind. 😉 Barb

  47. Angie in SoCal says:

Before I left for a family reunion on the 26th I made 52 blocks! I’m working on a leader and ender I started a couple of years ago, and a scrap quilt that is using up a lot of small pieces. Don’t have much to show yet, but I have something new on my design wall – a unicorn quilt that requires 14 friendship stars to make it wider.

  48. My block total for July came to 122, with most of them made as part of the Modern Quilt Studio summer mystery. I don’t expect August to be as productive–too much going on around here!

  49. Tanya says:

You were very busy this month! My total is 32 for the month. Started the Evergreen mystery from The Fat Quarter Shop. It’s a fun, small project that I can keep up with while working full time. I also made lots of items to sell for the Etsy shop. The heat has kept me inside as well. Looking forward to some nice fall weather!

  50. Kathi Benchley says:

7 blocks for me in July!

  51. katie z. says:

    47 blocks

I really need to finish a few quilts, which slows down the production- which is probably good for me!

  52. Debbi says:

I made 10 log cabin blocks this month. At this point I’m not sure I’m going to make the quota for the year however, I am making progress in getting things finished albeit slowly. I’ve been working on setting blocks together and making backings and bindings. Boy does a month go fast. I’m so impressed with all the other’s productivity!

  53. Stephanie says:

    Ooh lovely pineapple and braids!
I made just 20 blocks in July (one quilt worth) and assembled them. I spent most of the month sick, so was super happy to get those 20 done.

  54. cathy k says:

Only 8 blocks, it was a month full of family.

  55. Danice says:

Only 2 blocks in July for me. So many of you are sewing a lot of blocks, its wonderful.
