Signature Block Tutorial

Posted on June 11, 2020 by prairiemoonquilts in Tutorials

When I posted my Signature Block tutorial, I posted it at the end of the Arrow Rock Sampler BOM post, and lots of people are having trouble finding it, so I’m excerpting it here so it’s easier to find and refer to.

So, in case you missed it, I’m making a signature quilt — and I’d love it if you would send me a signature block!

I’ve collected 25 blocks already so far! Many thanks to all of you who have already sent one. But I’m planning to make a huge quilt, so I need a LOT more — haha!

Here’s the tutorial:

You need a 3 1/2″ square of solid white, and two 2 1/2″ squares of a bright color (print or solid, I don’t care which).

Draw a diagonal line on the back side of each colored square, and line one up on the corner of the white square, right sides together. Sew ON the drawn line, then trim 1/4″ outside the seam. (Actually, if you sew just a hair to the outside of the drawn line, it works even better — see my example.)

Press the corner out. Repeat this with the other colored square on the opposite corner of the white square. You’ll end up with a cute little block like this (3 1/2″ square):

Then, if you want to send it to me, I want you to sign it. You can put where you’re from, too, cos I think that’ll be fun to see. Here’s mine:

Then stick it in the mail to me at:

Shelly Pagliai
34374 Menefee Rd.
New Cambria, MO 63558

And thanks in advance for contributing to my quilt! This is gonna be so much fun.

My block went in the mail on Monday, so you should receive it any day!
I used a regular ink pen to sign my block …I hope that was okay.

I use Pigma Macron pens, but always make sure to heat set it when I’m done. This will be a fun quilt to see!

  5. Off to you Saturday! Cannot believe how the days just fly by. Still staying home and taking precautions with mask and distancing when I must go out. Hope all are doing well at your house, including all the 4-legged, also.

Your album blocks remind me when many of us sent siggy blocks and 25- 2 1/2 inch squares around the world in order to accumulate enough to make a YR2000 quilt with 2000 different pieces. My collection is still in a storage container–of course.

My block isn’t solid white. Shall I send a replacement? I don’t want to be THAT person.

Sorry, not exactly off topic, but close. It occurred to me we stress, and rightly so, about every mark we make by intent or accident, on our quilt tops. We have learned by hard lessons that whatever it is, it just doesn’t come out. Until we want to do a signature block! Then we stress over whether or not it is “permanent enough!” Just struck me as funny!!

  10. Well, I’d better get one of these little blocks made! I use the Micron Pigma pens and then give a good heat set. I’ve never seen them bleed or fade.

Thank you. A lot easier to find. Can you use an extra unsigned for family or friends to sign?

Thanks for giving me another shot at your block. I thought I had missed the deadline. This is fun! I plan to make 30 or more for my quilting friends whenever we start back gathering this year.
