May 350 Blocks Report

Posted on May 31, 2020 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

It does not feel like it should already be June starting tomorrow. But the weather seems to be right on cue — I think we’re gonna have to break down and turn on the AC this coming week. My Cowboy can’t handle the heat too well, so better safe than sorry.

We’ve been able to grill outside some already, so that means he’s taking over some of the cooking so I don’t have to do it all. Whew! I’m fast running out of ideas (and energy for it).

For May, I completed 61 blocks. I finally got to count all the blocks I made for the Arrow Rock Sampler quilts that I hadn’t counted yet, which you can see HERE, if you missed them.

I also made 10 Churn Dash blocks for an upcoming project, and ONE signature block!

I’ve also received about 16 signature blocks in the mail so far from some of you — thank you so much to those who have sent them. If you have not yet sent me one, and want to, I would love to have you contribute to my signature quilt! You can find the info and tutorial HERE. Send me a block — you can count it toward your block count for June! They’re gonna be so pretty all together!

And now it’s time for you all to report in with your May totals. I have the Project page updated, however . . . PLEASE double check your numbers and make sure I have them correct. I cannot for the life of me figure out why my spreadsheet randomly gets rid of some of the numbers. It’s so frustrating, I’m thinking about going back to keeping track with a plain old sheet of paper and a pencil.

Our goal for June is another 30 blocks, for a year-to-date total of 166.

The prize winner for April is Sherry V., who has 84 blocks so far this year (unless I’m cheating her because I lost a number).

I’m not sure what I’ll be working on in June, but I know I need to run the longarm more than I did in May. And I DO think I’m gonna tackle the cutting table mess in earnest. I ordered new cutting mats, and I can’t put them down if I don’t have a clear surface! It’s actually been getting slowly better, since I’ve finished some large projects lately. I’ll keep you posted. Happy stitching!

104 blocks for May! Which includes 66 more positivity blocks, 9 Be My Neighbor houses to complete that quilt top, 3 Lana Lemur blocks 2 of which I used to make a pillow for my daughter, 25 friends across the world sew along blocks and of course 1 signature block.

  2. PAULA M MORGAN says:

I had to read back to April, as for the life of me, I am not sure where May went! I have 4 mini blocks …. by the looks of my sewing area though you would have thought I was up to more than just those four! I have been practicing my signature, not getting any better!

  3. Sally H says:

145 Blocks for May, including 67 9-patch blocks, 70 rectangular Bricks, and 8 Twirla. Two tops sewn from the larger batches.

  4. Pam Martin says:

94 blocks – One quilt finished.

  5. Dortha says:

I have made 36 blocks. My sewing mojo needs to come back. Have been working in yard and watching the birds and squirrels. Live in Alabama and try hard not to turn the AC on until June 1. Made it till May 23 rd.

  6. 15 for me 😕 I’m sewing every month but not making blocks as much as I’m finishing projects. I’m good with that. This is going to be a great quilt! I hope you can finish it soon and share it.

  7. Louise says:

117 blocks for me along with six flimsies quilted and bound. This stay at home order has given me lots of extra time to see.

  8. Amanda M. says:

Again this month I made 54 blocks but for 6 different projects this time. I am also amazed by how fast May went by. I’m ready for it to slow down but I also know that winter time is just around the corner as an old neighbor used to say.

  9. Just 12 for me as I was caught up with quilting a UFO, making masks, and generally clueless where May went. ??

  10. Marianne says:

Zero. I am still in the rehab hospital for the third month. Hopefully I can get out and sewing in June?!

  11. Rose Marie Smith says:

I made 29 blocks but if you want to add to that, there were 11 masks, 1 small jelly roll quilt and 1 large jelly roll quilt. Woo Hoo. A lot of scraps used up in those jelly rolls. By the way 25 of that 29 were Mayflowers blocks. I am putting the borders on that today!! It is lovely. Another Shelly design that is fabulous.

  12. Crystal F says:

52 for May….mostly red, white, and blue. Although a few were pink for a sweet baby quilt I am working on!

  13. denniele says:

I have ZERO! Everything I pieced is part of another project and I don’t count them until the entire project is finished! One day…..a huge number will happen! 😉 I can relate to your cowboy and the heat. Humidity is something else I can’t take since the heart did its thing. Limiting but manageable. 🙂

  14. Paula Mu says:

Hi Shelly, my numbers look fine. For May I have 220 blocks. Fourteen Baskets and Blooms blocks, 4 Moda Bake shop flowers, 58 Unity mystery, 100 Quilted Twins mystery, 31 Hidden Spools project, 3 Silver Linings blocks, 8 May Rainbows blocks and 2 Temecula blocks to make enough blocks to put together the Stay at Home Sampler. I have several tops almost done (several need borders), so my block total will probably drop next month.

  15. Suelynn Williams says:

I’ve got 37 blocks for May and ready to make a quilt top now! We had one really hot day this weekend. The A/C didn’t cool the house at all (93 degrees inside), so the maintenance crew is coming to check things out. When I walk in the evenings, I smell the aroma of outdoor grilling – mmmmm nice.

  16. Ginny says:

52 blocks for May. I am linking about doing what you and several others do that is counting only what is finished. I’m still thinking. I have finished the quilt for one granddaughter and she really is pleased with it.
Yard and garden are keeping me busy. Must work on June early. Harold has hip replacement surgery the 19th and that will change the rest of the month

  17. Well done. What happened to May? It’s gone in a flash. I did get 31 block done and lots of half blocks that will be counted in June. So I have a head start on June.

  18. Marsha Parkhill says:

    38 for May

  19. Mary Durham says:

I have 226 blocks for May! A good part of them (107) are the Village Houses that a lot of people are making. I also made the Hope blocks that Gudrun Erla did as a fundraiser, a baby quilt and a 50 crab blocks for a quilt for my granddaughter’s 10th birthday.
My granddaugthers and I went to Sew Sweet a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful time spending my prize gift certificate (plus quite a bit more). Thanks again for the generous prize. They both got fabric for quilts, plus some for a baby quilt and backing for another quilt. They’re hooked!

  20. Barbara B says:

146 in May. Guess whose been staying home?

  21. Fran says:

I am sure that May will be my best month ever. I was able to make 270 blocks. I will probably never make that many again, but making the blocks was such fun. I am going to have so many quilts to give away when I leave my house.

  22. Candice says:

I don’t count blocks – but I wanted to let you know that your hamburger soup recipe has become – at least- a once every 2 weeks rotation in the Chaleff household. So delicious and so easy to make! I do swap out a heaping tablespoon of tomato paste for the can of tomato soup. Much yummier , and since I keep a tube of tomato paste in my fridge easier to keep available at this time where I avoid grocery stores. Also – its been unusually chilly here in Jersey – going down into the 40’s at night. Not much grilling happening here😞

  23. Maxine E says:

I completed 73 blocks! almost got a quilt top done. Just two seams to go! Hoping to get that quilted before next week Thursday. It’s for my SIL who is coming to visit and pick up my MIL. wish me luck in getting it done!

  24. Randy Menninghaus says:

Well I got hyjacked by mask making I made 10 blocks. They were pretty fancy mancey blocks. I did how ever assemble several quilts.

I watched the series The Great. which has my husband and I shouting huzzah! and tossing things to the ground.

    Pretty funny.

  25. Judy Sovereign says:

Well was busy month and did more masks than any thing. So only made 8 blocks this month. But things are opening up and back to classes so more to come

  26. Susan says:

Wow, good for you! You did an awesome job in May. I didn’t. But better than April’s ONE! My total for May was THREE. LOL So my yearly total is now 129 blocks – WAY behind.

  27. Light month for quilt blocks. Only did 12 in May as we’ve been doing some long neglected household projects. (Yuck, but so nice now! 😄👍)

  28. Michele says:

I had 60 blocks this past month. (I forgot to report the previous month- I had 118!!! but 60 is not shabby 🙂 )

  29. Sharon Gratz says:

Hi Shelly, I made a siggy block for you. Just need to remember to sign it and send it. lol In May I made 55 blocks. I’m getting caught up. 🙂

  30. KT says:

50 blocks for me. I need to finish some quilts now–a baby quilt and a graduation quilt, both events in less than 2 weeks–need to get busy!!!

  31. Wendy says:

68 for me this month. Love seeing those fun signature blocks! (We turned on the a/c today too)

  32. Cheryl says:

Congratulations on your May!!! I did 60 blocks.

  33. Danice says:

I completed only 1 block in May. Oh the shame, ha ha. ‘Been working on finishing those UFOs. As usual, you made so many blocks, and they are so pretty.

  34. Betty K says:

I have completed 44 blocks for May. Now that I have my sewing machine back from being repaired (twice) maybe I can put the pedal to the metal.
    Betty K

  35. Beverly says:

Zero again for me this month. Again my sewing time was taken up making masks. I have a few more to make and then I think I am going to go back to sewing blocks. I have been working on a quilt, but will wait to count when finished. I love your projects. I love the
Arrow Rock quilt, however I don’t think I could get it done right now. I have got scraps cut down to several sizes to be able to make blocks though. Sewing room is also looking better, but have several more boxes and baggies of scraps to cut into shapes for scrap quilts. I also have been working on projects to spruce up the house. And now it is camping season.

  36. dianne says:

Yeah! Finished 3 quilts, done done! Only made 45. I keep a few quilts going (BOM or BOW) at a time (7)…but I feel so good about finishing something! Just started the Arrow Rock – LOVE it!

  37. Shirley Guier says:

I have finished 3 quilts so I have 45 blocks.

  38. Marlene Clausen says:

39 blocks for May. I NEVER, EVER do BOW/BOM and right now, I am the beginning of one, near the end of another, and about to start a new one. Seriously, what is wrong with me!? One is a small wall hanging and 1/3 of the blocks are embroidered. Decided to do the entire quilt “at my chair.” In addition, made 20 more masks. Still need to complete my commitment to Lutheran World Relief. Having a lovely spring here. The past few years it seems we have only about a week of open window weather. This year it has been like the “good old days” of spring. There were a few chilly April days, but mostly open windows for almost two months.

  39. Deanna says:

Thank you for the reminder that signature blocks count. So, that makes 18 for me in May (total 238), plus 111 masks. Looking forward to more blocks in June.

  40. Angela Neese says:

Big fat zero for me – still sewing masks, up over 500 now. I thought it would slow down as masks become more available, but now my nursing home is requesting too. No end in sight, and haying season is fast approaching…

  41. sharong says:

    sharonG

I made 46 then I forgot to count if I any more!
I used to be smart, really.

  42. Sherry V says:

    Hi Shelly,

My mojo came back big time in May…..I got 174 blocks done!

Some were for a pattern test, some were for a scrap quilt (a pattern from a magazine circa 1997 if my calculations are correct!), some were from a sew a long, and some were just to try to use up my never ending supplies of scraps.

I hope that I can keep up the momentum in June!

    Have a lovely day.

  43. Karen E. says:

I made 149 blocks in May; quite a lot of them were 3” blocks, which went fast. I love your signature block collection so far and hope you receive lots more.

  44. Diana S says:

Never reported April so this is for April and May. Did a quilt along in May. Even kept up and finished it except for quilting. That was 9. The Canadian Row quilt-yes actually caught up-34 blocks and am following along on a Block of the week by Piecing the Past. Another 17. Am behine in that one but will be caught up soon! I think that should add up to 60 for the 2 months.
I also got a UFO off the books. Well not exactly, it is out together, just not quilted.
Will be gomg to a friend soon to quilt it. Put another UFO together except for the borders. I am getting things done.

  45. Diana S says:

Too bad I can’t type. Sorry for the typos!!!!!

  46. Julie M. says:

May was productive for me finishing up UFO’s and top completions. Continuing to work on using up ‘vintage’ pieces of fabric. Was able to complete 140 blocks. June will be a month for sandwiching and completing the pieced tops.

  47. Marsha Y. says:

Finished 64 blocks for a log cabin quilt. Now just have to set them together and quilt before of June 27th in time for granddaughter’s wedding shower!!! Spent part of June organizing sewing room and fabric so cut down on sewing time. I will be spending more time at the quilting machine in June too.

  48. Shirley B. says:

I completed 97 blocks for May.

  49. I did a total of 32. But I made 8 comfort quilts!

  50. Christi Bentley says:

I had 97 blocks this month. I am currently doing the hand sewing of the binding on my Summertime Sampler quilt!

  51. 23 blocks for me in May for a total of 122.
    Deana

    Thanks

  52. Linda Knight says:

31 blocks and 7 more masks for me this month. I also put a quilt on the frame and started quilting it.

  53. katie z. says:

I made 79 blocks this month for a total of 440!

  54. Marcia in TX says:

One 18 inch block like last month for the old friends bom. Sewed several parts of blocks but they have more to go before finished.
working on 2 other UFOs that had the blocks done but needed to be sewed into rows, etc. They will get done. Like your bright signature blocks.

  55. Angela says:

    You’ve been busy Shelly!
I did not complete any blocks in May.
I did finish piecing two Halloween quilts, Longarm quilted and bound them. Then I moved on to cutting out dozens and dozens of hexies. I’ve also started another vintage appliqué kit quilt (Pansies).
I will send you a signature block for your quilt … somehow I missed the original request for the blocks.

  56. Raewyn says:

I finally did a count up and my tally for May was 36 blocks. Well done on your tally! I’m loathe to send a signature block as international mail is so slow at the moment. I’ve been waiting nearly 3 months for something to arrive from the US…not sure how long a wee package would take to get to you??

  57. Shirley B says:

I made 97 blocks on May

  58. Joy Dabney says:

I made 60 blocks in May.

  59. Debbi says:

I made 72 blocks in May! Definitely a record for me. Best news is I’m back to long arming and have quilted 2 quilts and bound them and have another quilted and ready for binding! Hope I can continue the trend. I would like to have my flimsy’s all quilted by the end of the year. I have about 35? or so. It’s a goal😊.

  60. Barb Roberts says:

Well, I’m running late, can it be June already? Good thing I’ve started keeping a running total or I would be totally lost on the block count. I’ve got 69 blocks for May.

  61. Stephanie says:

35 blocks for me this time. Almost all were extra or replacement blocks for old UFOs. 12 Town Square (newer UFO), 4 string, 4 star, 10 woven, 5 houses (extras for a new project).

  62. Joan says:

324 blocks made in May. Many of the blocks were made from scraps leftover from making masks to donate to a large local congregate living center. Try to make at least one mask a day for them, as it looks like the need will remain for a while.
Only one new project started which is still in the cutting stage. I’ve collected corduroy and this is what I am cutting for this quilt. A friend made one a long while ago and the texture of that quilt was so amazing. Will be interesting to see how challenging it will be to stitch–plan to use a walking foot!

  63. Kerry says:

Only 30 for me this time!

  64. Elle says:

    309 Blocks! COVID can’t stop me 🙂

  65. Ellen Bencken says:

Oops. Missed 2 that are already finished quilts.

    379 blocks for May!

  66. Linda Knight says:

I managed to put together 9 blocks in June and make a small kitchen sink quilt top from orphan blocks. I also quilted a quilt this month. Work demands and a few days restful trip kept me out of the quilt room.

  67. I had 32 blocks this month. Congratulations on your total!
