March 350 Blocks Report

Posted on April 1, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

It’s time once again for a 350 Blocks Report!

How did you do this month?

The weather has been nicer, so we’ve been getting outside more. It’s time to clean up after winter makes such a mess, and we’ve been (as usual) re-building and re-arranging some things around here. You’d be bored if I listed all the projects we’ve done, but I do promise some Ranger photos soon, since his birthday is fast approaching!

And in the studio, I’ve still been cleaning and re-arranging as well. I’m finally starting to be able to tell a difference. Things are looking better. It’s still going terribly slowly, but at least it’s going. Besides, I lost an hour to the time change.

In March, I managed to make 55 blocks! It could have been more, given the amount of sewing I did, but a LOT of the sewing I did was setting blocks together to finish up quilt tops, and preparing backings and bindings for those tops. I always say: At some point, all those blocks you make need to be set into quilt tops! Evidently, I get stymied at that point a lot of the time!

While cleaning, I found lots of projects that were so close to done that I made the effort to just get them finished instead of continuing to shuffle them around. I think I’ve shown most of them to you, but here’s a recap . . .

I added the final rows to this quilt to make it bigger, so I’m counting each row as a block, for an additional 8 blocks to get this top finished (this is a photo before I added the rows):

I finally got 8 blocks of my Limerick quilt put together. I have a long way to go yet:

I made 17 more tiny HST blocks for this scrap quilt:

I made 4 more wild 9-patch blocks, 5 little Churn Dash blocks, and 3 more Snowball blocks:

I found some random squares partially sewn together in a drawer, so I sewed them together into this little 25-patch. I’ll probably throw it into an orphan block quilt someday, or go completely nuts and start another Postage Stamp quilt, even tho I still haven’t finished the first one I have going! And speaking of Postage Stamp quilts, you have to see Deanna’s that she just finished. She did hers in a timely fashion, while I started mine in June of 2011, and am still not very far along.

I’m counting the extra work I did on this quilt to finish it up as 2 blocks:

And I made 7 blocks I can’t show you just yet (dang that secret sewing)!

And now it’s your turn to report in. It’s always so inspiring to hear what you’ve been working on and what you’ve gotten accomplished!

I’ve got the Project Page updated with our totals as of this morning, and our new block goal for April, which is 30 blocks, for a year-so-far total of 105. I’m happy that I’ve been staying ahead of the game so far this year, since that may come to a screeching halt based on the deadlines of others later in the year!

Our prize winner for February is Sharon K., who is already up to 118 blocks, so she really doesn’t even need to sew this month if she doesn’t want to!

I’m looking forward to your comments, and I’m wishing you all a wonderful, peaceful Easter weekend, and a lovely sewing month of April!

I spent a week cleaning my sewing room. I still have the hearth to deal with, but I can see it. We also don’t talk about the boxes under the longarm. March saw me make 68 blocks! For April, I know I have 21 blocks I’ll be making – the rest of Shimmer, 2 more Easy Breezy blocks, and 3 more Addicted to Scraps blocks. Beyond that who knows.

  2. Marsha Parkhill says:

I’m also working more on finishing tops along with backing and batts for them but did manage 36 blocks in March.

Only 24 for me this month; seems like I did more than that. Hmm. Anyway – you have some fun blocks going on!

  5. Kathi Benchley says:

30 blocks for the month of March. If it wasn’t for this challenge, my number would be much smaller. Thank you for the motivation!

  6. Ceil Podzimek says:

I only got 12 blocks made in March, but I did get a bit of quilting done. 2 more tops to quilt and then I’ll go back to making blocks. I have 2 projects to start with my guild and 2 other projects I’ve decided of my own, so the spring fling will begin!

  7. Joan says:

Finished 40 blocks. I have all blocks for Down Home Darling done, and sewn into rows. Maybe I will finish the top this month…
Congratulations on all of the progress you have made!

  8. Kathy Parks says:

It was a good month for me – 93 blocks.

  9. Debra Freese says:

Total of 149 for me in March.

45 1” hexie blocks for the 100 days of hexie challenge, 42 4-patch blocks made with leftovers from the Hope’s Journey quilt, 12 blocks for a Linus quilt and 50 Chandelier blocks that are now on my NEW design wall.

  10. KT says:

Love seeing all you are accomplishing! I managed 26 blocks in March. April break is only a week away–here’s hoping I get some sewing time!

  11. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for March -0-. Lots of sewing to make 4patches and half square triangles. Sewing these little elements together to make blocks for April.

  12. Rose Marie Smith says:

I have finished 170 blocks this month. Most of it is just sewing together leftover squares and triangles into 4 patches and pinwheels. There were 24 for a quilt that is not a scrap leftover!! Marine life blocks!

  13. Karen E. says:

I made 178 blocks this month. I’ve been staying really focused on completing 20 UFOs I signed up to do this year for a challenge members of our guild are doing.

I was also able to do some cleaning up of my studio. Not much of it shows, since it was mostly cleaning out of drawers and a few shelves. Feels good though!

Shelly, the quilts you’re working on are such pretty ones!

  14. Diane says:

Hi Shelly, I love that triangle quilt! I did get a few blocks made. 16 Nine Patch Hearts, 4 Square Dance, 10 Delectable Mountains and 5 Sparkle Jane Hearts (those were wicked easy – thinking I need to make something with this block!). Hope to do better and have a few finishes next month.
    Keep up the good work!

  15. Delana says:

    I made one block. 😬

  16. Kerry says:

Oh epic fail here! I have been doing a bit of quilting – bit being the word. Lost a screw on the machine to put the foot on, emptied the cubby holes in the door of the machine table and tidied them up but no screw. It turned out to be in the quilt that I’d pushed aside. Oh well, pins retrieved, pin box lid fixed and tidied. Swings and roundabout week!

  17. Elaine Walker says:

I made a total of 22 blocks. Sure felt like it should have been more! I did a lot of sewing, but a lot of it was quilting 4 table runners and finishing them. Anyway I enjoyed a lot of sew days. 😀

  18. Maxine E says:

26 blocks for me. Still working on my Star quilt and started another project. Still haven’t figured out that I should complete one project before starting another!

  19. Mary D. says:

    I did 50 blocks – 48 for a Bullseye quilt and 2 for a fabric storage bin.
You have so many interesting projects going. I love the Limerick block – so fun to see the square with the partial map of Ireland.

  20. Paula M Morgan says:

89 for me. “Go Big” from the book Rediscover your Stash. If I hadn’t lost a day this week I would be on a roll to complete a quilt top a month…. maybe I can catch up.

  21. Linda Knight says:

I managed 59 blocks in March but I also quilted and bound 5 throw sized quilts. Part of the 59 blocks is a new quilt I’ve started using 9 patch blocks and solid blocks.

  22. Sally H says:

57 blocks, 55 Trip Around the World and 2 BOM swap blocks.

  23. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Didn’t feel like i got many blocks done yet when i counted – 37. Keep trying to work on UFO and then the 2 panels challenge. Trying not to start new projects but plug away on the list! You have some nice blocks & projects done.

  24. It always amazes me when you find a project that was so close to being finished Why we did not finish it then? Great work.
I got 62 blocks to add to my total for March. So I am happy.

  25. Tonia says:

    Only 20 for March

  26. Sandi Scarlett says:

I made 53 blocks for March. We are going to be moving out of state so I’m spending a lot of time boxing stuff up.

  27. Louise R says:

I made 149 blocks this month. 80 of them were simple 9-patches for an unplanned quilt for a gift for my son and daughter-in-law in memory of their beloved dog Buddy. They had Buddy (or he had them) for 15 years. He loved the beach and they were able to spend the last 7 winters on the beach in Florida – yes, they are snowbirds and only in their 40s. They have lured us down there now for 4 years. Buddy loved the beach and walked with us every day. About two weeks before they had to put him down, he took a 3 mile walk with us. We only had to carry him for a short distance. (He only weighed 7 pounds, so it was easy to carry him.) He developed a brain tumor while in Florida and they had to say good-bye to him while they were down there. I made two beach themed quilts for them in memory of Buddy. One is a lap quilt and the other is more of an art quilt for a wall hanging. The art quilt was WAY out of my comfort zone, and I learned a lot while making it.

  28. Yay, 88 blocks for me in March. Kind of sounds like a piano keyboard huh? LOL. Had a large quilt I need to get done ASAP and out for quilting, so put the push on!

  29. Angie in SoCal says:

Surprisingly, I made 53 blocks thru various projects I’ve either finished or working on. March was good to me.

  30. Karen C says:

No blocks to report this month. Been trying to come up with something for the panel challenge though. Hopefully next month there will be some to report. Everyone is doing so well!

  31. Stephanie says:

I had some time away piecing with friends, and finished up blocks for 3 different projects. 48 String-X, 24 Lost and found, and 35 Uneven rails. Total of 107 blocks – phew!

  32. Becky Cogan says:

I made 61 blocks. Did get a couple of quilts off to the quilter so that felt good. Great reading what everyone else is doing. You’re are head majorette for our marching team.

  33. Christi Bentley says:

I had 79 blocks this month. I did several 4-patches, and finished up the blocks I needed for my Arkansas Crossroads quilt. I also made a couple of spool blocks and 6 Quilty Stars blocks.

  34. Julie M. says:

I was able to complete 33 blocks in March.

  35. Ginabeth says:

I had 81 this month. Like you I had pieced border blocks that increased my block count. Also doing a 365 quilt that has you doing a block a day. Thanks for keeping the count for us all.

  36. Sharon Gratz says:

I did 55 blocks in March, so I’m getting caught up. I have a couple tops I’m working on getting the blocks sewn together and another one, the borders…….while ideas are whirling around in my head. 🙂

  37. Fran says:

Seeing pictures of quilts you are working on inspires me. Your piecing is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your progress with us. Like Ginabeth, I am making the 365 quilt. In March, I made 142 blocks.

  38. Suelynn Williams says:

I made 7 blocks in March. Our grown children came from afar to see us two weeks after our 2nd vaccine, stayed five days. My daughter loved the top I pieced in February. She took it home with her and will take it to her long-arm quilter. Shelly, you made a lot of blocks in addition to all the other things you do. I’m fascinated with the idea of the postage stamp block.

  39. I’m in for 41 blocks this March.

  40. Love seeing all of your projects! I’ve been doing a little of this, a little of that, with some sewing in between. I’ve just quilted a UFO from my list and ready to add the binding! Trying to focus on finishing more.
    28 blocks for March…thought I’d made more but I’m all right with 28 🙂

  41. Marlene Clausen says:

87 for March. I completed my Newport Fantasy top and took it to a long armer for quilting. The second quilt in just over 30 years I have/will pay to have quilted. This is a beautiful quilt and am very excited to see it finished. April will be about a whole lot of finishing and not much starting. Keeping up with a few BOM/BOW’s and getting another one or two QOV tops ready to send to my BFF in Liberty, MO.

  42. Shirley B says:

    This month I made 24 blocks .

  43. Judy Sovereign says:

Had a good month got 179 done. Shelly loved the projects you showed us. Hope I can keep up the pace this month. Have a lot to finish.

  44. Christine says:

    Christine in Florida
Finished 40 blocks: double 4patch blocks

  45. christopher thomas says:

well my numbers were down this month with getting the shop ready to open the second weekend in April so did not sew as much as I would of liked but I did sew and got a total of 285 blocks down in March.

I have been working on getting rid of things and will be fun to post that number at the end of the clean up

hope everyone has a great day and a fablous month of quilting

  46. Amanda M. says:

I didn’t spend much time at the sewing machine and it shows in my total of 37 blocks for 4 projects. I did a lot of quilting including 2 Queen size embroidery quilts and each about killed me because I’m not used to concentrating so intently on something so long. I learned to use my chair that came with my machine after my knees about gave out half way through the first quilt. I’m much too young to feel this damn old. Since it’s warmer here I doubt I get much piecing done although I need to for a late graduation quilt. Where did my motivation blow off to now?!

  47. Wanda says:

    7 blocks….

  48. Wanda says:

    7 blocks

  49. Celine says:

Well done! Sadly I only made 2 blocks in March, so my total is now 53…

  50. SHaronG says:

    SharonG
72 for March– the ones I unsewed , I only count once.
It has been that kind of month

  51. Wow, great total for you! I had 7 blocks for a total so far of 57.

  52. Paula Mu in NE Ohio says:

I had a great month sewing. I pieced 230 blocks. I pieced Mapleton Avenue top 48 blocks, Milky Way top 37 blocks, a guild mystery 54 blocks, Riley Blake 3 blocks, March Hope 30 blocks,North Star pillow 1 block, World Piece top 9 blocks,Quilters Trek 4 blocks, Locking Triangles 4 blocks and 40 Scrap Dance Pachanga blocks. I had so much fun sewing, now the hard part – quilting.

  53. Angela says:

You’re on a roll with your block totals and all the unfinished tops that you’ve completed so far this year!
I only completed 12 blocks in March; however, I did completed another counted cross stitch Christmas stocking and I started one of my vintage appliqué quilt kits.
I’ve come to realize that I enjoy handwork more than sewing machine work.
Wishing you a very happy Easter weekend. 😊

  54. Christine Thomas says:

Wow – it’s so inspiring to read what people are doing! This challenge has definitely helped keep me motivated, thank you for organising us and keeping count. In March I completed 38 blocks. I also made a couple of quilted postcards and put borders on a top. I’m waiting for our ‘non-essential’ shops to open again so I can browse fabric and threads for backing and quilting.

  55. Barb Roberts says:

A total of 117 blocks for me this month.
31 blocks to finish up my Hope’s Journey quilt top and 86 of a schoolgirls’ puzzle variation for a now completed quilt top. I’m predicting a slow down in April since I have some outdoor projects that need to be done. Thanks Shelly!

  56. Susan says:

I did seem to be sewing a lot, but have no blocks to report this month. I almost made one just so that I wouldn’t have to report a big ZERO, but felt that might be cheating. Besides tons more masks that were requested, I made several outfits for my 3 grandchildren, as well as some bibs. I quilted 2 quilts and bound one. Happy Easter!

  57. Deanna says:

March added 67 more blocks for me. This is shaping up to be a record-breaking year. But, I shouldn’t get too confident as I have three large projects that will be mostly just assembly and and will slow block creation. But, either way, it is fun and instructive to count.

  58. Julie in GA says:

I had a busy month with 133 blocks made for several different projects in March.

  59. Clara Chandler says:

17 blocks to report for the March total. I have more cut out but took a break to do a binding on a quilt recently returned from the longarm quilter. Spring is a beautiful month here in the Pacific NW and I’m enjoying the blooms…and the weeding begins.
    Enjoy a very happy holiday!

  60. Raewyn says:

Well done on your sewing and sorting this month. It must be a good feeling to be finishing some quilt tops! I made 29 blocks in March – slightly shy of the target total but it was a grand effort for me!

  61. Carissa says:

I made exactly 1 block. LOL. I spent the month sewing 10 garments for my family to wear for Easter, so that’s where my time went this month. I’m sure I’ll get back to quilting again soon.

  62. Barbara B says:

March saw the completion of 148 blocks

  63. Danice says:

I completed 8 blocks in March. Hoping to do more in April.

  64. Great totals you have! I had a bit better this month, 33 blocks. Not sure how much I will get done this month as DH is in the hospital right now.

  65. I finished a whopping 3 blocks. Finding it hard to contain my excitement!!

  66. Aileen Kline says:

Only 30 blocks this month. I am trying to finish a few UFO’s

  67. Pam M says:

    32 blocks for March.

  68. Randy Menninghaus says:

    46

    • Randy Menninghaus says:

HI, I can’t decide if the two quilts I made using 1/2 triangles and arranging a 160 of them counts.. or how to count it… Sorry I was so short. Maine is in hop season and as I have both shots plus the wait time, I am spending time on the road three days of April so far. Go look and see how larger Maine is!!!

  69. Marsha Y. says:

Total of 18 blocks for March. Spent too much time cleaning and organizing sewing area and material this month. However, I already have several blocks done for April so hoping my total will be larger.

  70. Kris says:

    I made a total of
    Scrap Coin blocks – 12
Houses and Trees blocks – 85
So my grand total for the month of March was 85
Love watching these numbers add up!
And I love your elongated hexagon quilt in your posting. So very pretty! Thanks for hosting our progress.

  71. Paula Mu says:

Hi, just checked my block total and it seems to be off. Here are my numbers so far: January-53, February-67 and March-230. Just an FYI. Thanks for all you do.
