July Studio Organizing, Task Two

Posted on July 27, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Organizing hasn’t been high on my list of priorities lately, because I’m working hard to finish up my newest BOM program that launches very soon! I’m excited to get to show it to you — the big reveal is August 14th!

Since we were allowed to choose our own task last time, I chose to work on my scrap basket. Here’s a before photo. I should never allow it to get this high, and I had resolved to empty it each week, but that plan has obviously fallen by the wayside.

And I did not work on it for very long, because I need to be doing other things (like actual sewing), and in the meantime, I keep making more scraps to add to it!

But here’s the after shot — hardly any noticeable difference:

I DID take time to label all the drawers on my new scrap storage unit, and I must say, I wish I had done this a LONG time ago. I love it this way — it’s so much easier to put the pieces away, and to get them out to use out of them.

And in the interest of not adding any additional things to my list because I’m still in overwhelm mode, this next task is sort of another “choose your own” task:

Pick a previous task you haven’t gotten finished yet, and revisit it

Sort of like we did HERE. There are lots of areas I could work on, but until I finish the BOM, I’m not really concentrating on anything else, so if I get any organizing done, it’ll be an accident!

Have you been short on organizing time, too? I know the heat has been keeping lots of folks indoors — this is our hottest week yet. Before that it was all the storms and rain. It’s also vacation time for lots of people, so maybe you haven’t even been home at all?

What task did you decide to do last time? And what previous task do you need to revisit this time that you didn’t get done from before?

I also chose to attack the scraps. I got them all pressed. The flannel I cut and put all the squares in a container with the intent of making a warm quilt or two, possibly as many as four, with the 2 1/2″ squares I cut. But that was about 1/32 of the stack of fabric (neatly pressed, though) just waiting for me. Think I may have that be my goal for August. Just 15 minutes a day and I’d have it knocked out in no time, provided I don’t cut anything the other 23hours and 45 minutes a day.

I’m so glad our guild is able to meet in person again and tonight’s speaker is the lady from Scraps KC, and we can take items we’d normally put on the free table to donate. I’d like to take a lot more, but we’re a big guild and I’m sure she’ll have all she can handle. That’ll help with the HUGE pile on my dining room table I’ve collected during lockdown. I’m hoping to have it all donated by our November meeting.

It is really hot here, too. I did a bit of sewing today, then got busy shelving new fabric and reshelving some that I was done with. The scraps seem to be never ending, so I just try to keep them in their respective bins.

  4. I, too, have been working on scraps. Got my mama started on making string blocks in the hopes of putting together a baby quilt. I’m still working on a AHIQ (that’s an at home improv quilt), and trying to keep up with the Color Block quilts – not doing so good on that but I’m at least using her free FMQ video for each month to learn a new motif. And if you go to my blog, you’ll see a couple of finishes I have. Phew – hot here as elsewhere. Stay cool, quilters.

Instead of cleaning off the end of my cutting table and dealing with the scraps I spent a lot of time finding somewhere cooler. Instead of anything else, I’m going to keep that goal. I’m amazed by just how green the grass is here for the end of July!

One last tote bin of misc. fabric and batting and I’m done with emptying my totes! So, that one is my choice. It’s been making me crazy for months, it needs to be sorted and put where I can find what is in it. I know it has (in addition to a lot of other stuff) three 1920’s vintage baby- quilt-size wool batts. They are beautiful and destined for hand quilting.

I love your new storage units! I’m envious! I didn’t get any progress made on cleaning off my cutting table so I’ll continue to try to get that done. I’m about ready for a good snow storm -at least all of the mosquitoes are dead then.

I need to put away things after finishing project. Will work on that & a new baby quilt must be made fir neighbor who is moving in about 18 days. Will get it done!

  9. I can’t even remember what I was planning on organizing this month. Between the horrid heat dome, ridiculous temperatures (52c in the shade) and a couple of wildfires putting us on alert, I’ve mostly been working on using my precut scraps to make quilts for the people whose town burnt down with only 15 minutes notice (Lytton, BC). As long as I am evacuation alert I will continue playing with scraps and not having any stress or pressure added to life right now.

Total blocks for July: 30. Getting better! My email is messed up, has been for several months and did not get a notification from you regarding the 360 blocks. If I did not sew, I would not have additional scraps. But I must sew and some is using scrap fabric. I like your drawer unit with the sizes marked. I could use this organized concept; now where to place it so I can easily get to the drawers. Please tell where you found the drawer unit. Thanks.

I got seven boxes unpacked an put away! That sounds like a lot, but it’s not. Still lots to find places for. And I got busy with customer quilts – that’s my excuse. I hope to get more boxes dealt with this month.
