August 350 Blocks Report

Posted on August 31, 2019 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Labor Day weekend! How is this possible already!?? And this morning, I wore long sleeves. It’s August 31st, and it’s already cooling off like fall. My favorite time of year. But since it seems to be arriving a tad early, I’m wondering if it means we’re going to have a really cold winter, and I dread the thought of that!

But we can’t choose the weather, so there’s no sense fretting over it. I can always stay in and keep quilting!

I had a fairly good block count this month. I finally get to count some blocks I’ve been waiting to count until I was done with the quilts, so that I wouldn’t accidentally count them twice, or lose track of my count. I made it to a total of 98 this month.

Forty-two of my blocks were for these quilts, the new BOM for Sew Sweet Quilt Shop.

Here’s some of the other stuff I’ve been working on . . .

I made these two blocks for Bev as part of our monthly guild block challenge. She gave us two pieces of fabric, and we could make any block we chose.

I made 8 more blocks/sections of my third version of my Summertime Sampler quilt. I’m doing one in all scraps, mixing the two versions together, and I love it so much! Here’s my Block 9:

I made the final block for this quilt! I’ve had these stashed for about 7 years. They were from an online Bee I was a part of, and I only needed one more block to have enough, and I finally finished that one lone block. It’s the traditional Laurel Leaves appliqué block. At a sew day with my friends last weekend, I got the top set together. I’m so excited to get to quilt this one — I have some great ideas for that!

I have all the pieced blocks made for my mystery quilt. I went with a Christmas theme, since I’ve never made a real red and green Christmas quilt. I made 8 blocks like this — it’s the traditional Christmas Star block:

And I made 28 Churn Dash blocks for it as well:

I’m counting 4 other pieced sections not pictured here, but I haven’t finished the appliqué blocks, so I’m not counting those just yet.

I made three more Vintage Christmas Ornaments for the Vintage Christmas Ornaments Quilt-Along that’s going on over at The Life of Hazel Ilene. Here’s one of them:

And I jumped in Barbara Brackman’s Daredevils Quilt-Along, and I have two blocks finished for that. Here’s Block 1:

And Block 3:

I’m currently working on Block 2, and Block 5 just came out today. As always, I’m running behind. If you’d like to join in on this one (the blocks come out weekly, so it’s moving fast), you can find it HERE. There’s also a Facebook group you can join.

Whew! I was busier than I thought in August! I hope September can be as productive — or more!

How about you? Did you get a lot done in August? It sure went by in a blur, so if you were busy with other things, I can completely understand.

But it’s now your turn to report in and let us all know how you did! Leave a comment or contact me to let me know your totals for the month. As always, double-check your totals on the Project Page to make sure I have them correct. Back earlier in the year, I lost a few numbers (probably because I don’t know how to run my spreadsheet correctly), so I’m grateful to those of you who got me straightened out.

I have the Project Page updated with the latest totals, and our new goal for September, which is 32 blocks, for a year-to-date total of 259 blocks.

Our prize winner for July is Betty K., who has made 335 blocks so far this year! She’s almost there!

Wishing us all a happy sewing September . . . enjoy the Labor Day weekend!

Zero blocks this month. A one word reason why – pneumonia.

  2. You had a good month. I have a total of 35 for August. I am hoping in to knock out a few extra this month as I am attending our anual retreat. If there isn’t too many issues(I am the boss for the weekend) I hope to make a dent into a couple long term UFO.

hi I am guessing 4, the last two months I have been putting tops together. Plus I have had some health issues… Wish me luck, I am having a pacemaker with a defibrillator inserted on this coming Tuesday. Hopefully this will sort me out and I will make up my count next month.

  4. Emma says:

I have that same green Moda marble swirl as you used in your Christmas block! I used it for a backing years ago and still have scraps of it floating out into scrap blocks every now and again…

As for blocks…I’ve stopped keeping track this year. I’m quilting up a storm, but with two little boys running around something had to give and blogging and keeping track of the blocks I complete was it. Oh well, maybe in a few years!

  5. Amanda M. says:

According to my notes I have created 54 blocks for 3 different projects in my sporadic bursts of sewing. I have tried to enact a rule of I have to finish 3 projects before I can start 1 new one; I’ve been successful as I finished 3, have 1 in need of binding and have 2 more ready to be quilted. The new project I’ve started is for me since it’s using Kona’s color of the year Splash that I love and another fabric line I fell for. Thankfully the Disappearing Pinwheel Churn dash is going together good for me. I love seeing everything you do but it only adds to my “want to make” list….

  6. Susan says:

Perfect! I’m going to be gone all next week, and I wasn’t sure how to get this report in! 32 Blocks for a total of 290 so far this year. Yay!

Wow you WERE busy in August! I like every single one of those projects, but the laurel leaf really appeals to me. What wonderful things to be working during the end of summer.

  7. Sharon Gratz says:

35 blocks for August (pre Dorian) for a total of 290.

  8. Julie M says:

My total block count for August was 62

  9. Cheryl says:

I did 100 blocks this month for a total of 1583 for the year.

  10. Crystal says:

Busy month…101 blocks! All red, white, and blue for Quilts of Valor!

  11. Wanda Marvel says:

    0 🙄

  12. Raewyn says:

HI Shelley, I really have got so behind so it probably is best if you take my name off the 350 blocks list 🙁 I love this though so will try again next year (if you do it again). I love the blocks you have made – I’ve been eyeing up the Daredevils blocks too.

  13. Rose Marie Smith says:

This was a month of finishing stuff for me. But I did manage to make 47 blocks. 36 of those were for a top that was completed! One was a daredevil……..just in under the August wire!!!

  14. Judy Smith says:

I only had 1 block this month, an applique block for a quilt finish. Also has a 10 day vacation in there.

  15. JanetD says:

August sure was a blur, so much so I got a zero count. Maybe September will be more productive.

  16. As crazy as it sounds, I had a couple really big quilts with tiny blocks done this month and have a huge amount of 667 done. I even went back to look to make sure, and yep, those big quilts with tiny blocks add up.
That makes it 1372 for the whole year so far. August was a completion month, so that helped too.

  17. Christi Bentley says:

I finished 40 this month. Love the Laurel Leaves. Can’t wait to see how you quilt it!

  18. Maxine Euto says:

I have a big fat ZERO to report. I think I am depressed. I have not been wanting to sew at all. I even put away the sewing machine. Every night, I tell myself that I WILL sew tomorrow. And every day, I wake up and I am not motivated. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I hope this feeling ends soon. I love to quilt! Maybe I just need to just sit at the machine and just sew a quick project! Does anyone feel like this after sewing continually for awhile? I want to get back into the swing of things. It’s not like I have other things going on in my life! This feeling of BLAH has been with me since the beginning of summer! I need it to go away!

  19. Cathy Wight says:

I’m hopefully back on track now. Had a retreat in August and 2 more coming up…😄. My total for August is 83!!!

  20. I had a total of 97 blocks with a wide range of projects. I love those daredevil blocks but I dare not get involved with another project!

  21. Marcia in TX says:

Total this month is 4 for me. I have been so totally lazy. I think I am going to have to get out the strips and make simple blocks between sewing done blocks and rows together.
Maxine, I know how you feel and it is really hard to get out of that slump. Put on some music you love and go sew some easy thing with fabric you love, just for 10 minutes… Or just for the 3 or 4 minutes of the song. Hugs Sent your way.

  22. Paula Mullet says:

I have 40 blocks this month. I am trying to follow a few Christmas mysteries, so that gave me some. A scrappy spool quilt made with stash is helping, too.

  23. Paula Mullet says:

I just checked the project page. It looks like my June 26 and July 31 numbers are missing. The total on the page only includes numbers rough May. I did submit those numbers. This has to be a huge job, so thank you.

  24. Mary D. says:

I finally got that owl quilt done that I kept procrastinating on, so I’ve made some progress on other things. I have 67 for the month! After a two months drought, it’s about time I made some progress.

  25. Angela says:

Wow, you were a busy bee in August!
August was not a productive quilting month for me (I’ve been busy working on a counted cross stitch birth announcement).
I completed 12 blocks for a baby quilt and one appliqued block.
Well, I didn’t know Barbara Brackman had a Daredevils group! Woohoo, one more thing to get involved in. Lol

  26. Ginny Smith says:

    Hi All,
I am on the road until the 8th and don’t have my count with me. I’ll report after I am home. Then home for a week and off to IL and TX and not back again until the 23 or 24. I think Sept will be a low block count month.
    Enjoy the nice weather.

  28. Angie in SoCal says:

Mere 20 for me this month – still having summer fun. That’s ended now and into the routine of school time baby sitting. Liked your blocks and that quilt!

  29. Wendy says:

89 for me. It’s been difficult to keep track of this month, because so much of my sewing has been secret. I usually count off of my blog posts – haha!

  30. denniele says:

What a great month you had! I finally am able to count some blocks and have 123! I am so looking forward to cooler temperatures! I know I have said it before but I think your Sew Sweet BOMs are terrific!

  31. Karen E. says:

I made 125 blocks in August. I’ve also been putting blocks made during the past three or four months into quilt tops. I’m still trying to get some UFOs done, but I find I’m not very motivated on those.

  32. Paula M says:

I have 40 blocks for 100 day 100 blocks (74) – I have approx. 600 5 in squares cut for the first clue of Simply Sensational Summer Scrap-just 200 more! Thankfully I am behind as the reveal has happened, and I have been saved from making a very bad color choice! Sewing of the clue will happen this month. Faded Glory’s 5 in squares are sewn into 13 rows,I will count them next month…borders still waiting to be applied to one Christmas gift quilt….next month hopefully will be a productive month!

  33. Peggy says:

I have been sewing in August, just not blocks for a quilt. I sewed together the bird table topper for my youngest daughter’s birthday, and quilted it all over using walking foot with about 1/4″ spacing. I posted pictures on instagram. Then, I’ve made 3 bags similar to a “sew together” bag (3 zippered inside pockets and a 20″ zipper on the outside to close it and form a handle at each end. I did coss-hatch quilting on the outside of each bag. And finally I have made 2 collapsible zipper bottom boxes. I didn’t find them fun, or easy, but I did them. So, I don’t know if these count as any blocks, but that’s what I did in August.

  34. Love the variety of red leaves in the applique blocks.

  35. Joan says:

Great post on what you have accomplished. I made one hand pieced block this month…

  36. No blocks for Jason or I this month. Gee, I wonder why?? 😉

  37. Carolyn Schomaker says:

Had8 blocks this month. Been on readingfrenzy. Also just got some quilting foot rulers and trying to learn how to machine quilt using rulers.

  38. Tonia says:

    Blocks for August: 10
But!! 2 finishes that have been hanging over my head and 25 applique blocks cut out for on the road work in September. Love your blocks, Shelly! I am always inspired to do more when the first of the month rolls around and the results come in! Fall is my favorite time of year, too. But busy, oh so busy getting the gardening wrapped up and anticipating Christmas!!

  39. KT says:

Threw together a charity quilt top at the end of the month that helped my numbers–12 quick and easy blocks, bringing my total up to 43 for August. Now to get some more things quilted this month! Always love seeing what you’ve been working on!

  40. Danice says:

All of your blocks are gorgeous. Those points are perfect with none clipped-off. I managed to sew only 8 blocks in August. Better than none, ha ha.

  41. Beverly Vendt says:

I’ve been out of town working for the month, so my total is zero. I have been thinking about the quilt that I am in the process of making and think when I get back home I am going to finish it differently than I started and will be able to do it much quicker and move on so I can get some quilts done this fall.

  42. Joy says:

August block count 7. Each block had 45 pieces each. I also worked on other things.

  43. Stephanie says:

70 for me this time. All QAYG string blocks to mail off to a friend for her hospital ministry.

  44. Pam Martin says:

102 blocks this month – 2 retreats really help.

  45. Barbara B says:

    87 blocks completed in August

  46. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for August: 59 – 2 finished tops and one in progress, getting the fabric used and outta here to go to others.

    • Marilyn Holder says:

Thank you for your reply, words of encouragement. I am sure this yearly project is a lot of work, but it really motivates me! I hope you can keep it going for many years.

  47. Linda Knight says:

I managed to make 19 blocks in August. I made a table runner for my daughter’s new really long table.

  48. Diana S says:

I have always liked the Traditional Christmas Star block but have never made it! You have been busy! I need to get on the stick and get blocks made this month. None for August! Not sure I have ever had a goose egg month!! My sewing was getting blocks into tops. Now I have 8 quilts here to bind! We had planned on taking off for a week later on this month to see what birds, butterflies and Dragonflies were migrating around South Padre Island. After looking at the long range forecast we decided to hold off for a while. Still to warm which means we can’t leave our Tiki in the car if we go out to eat. So no trips planned now until October. Will sew during the day and work on binding quilts at night since we are staying home!

  49. Ginabeth says:

Just now checking in for August. Travel, kids moving, one child in FL (hurricane worry) etc.
    August-16
Went back and counted a couple past months
    June-23
    July-32
Will try to pull up earlier months in next report

  50. Karen says:

You did have a great month! That quilt top with the Laurel Leaves blocks is stunning. I can’t wait to see how you quilt it.
I’m afraid I’ve had another unproductive month; just too many other things going on. So a big 0 for me. But I’ve still got a few more months to hopefully add some to my total.

  51. sharon says:

    SharonG
I almost forgot to post– I have don 30 blocks this month

  52. Marsha Y. says:

It was a busy month for me, but managed to get 25 blocks done and one quilt top set together. Still aiming for bigger totals next time.

  53. Marlene Clausen says:

80 blocks for August. On to Christmas gifts and other projects which should produce more blocks!! Just hope it produces more FO’s!

  54. katie z. says:

I sewed a total of 114 new blocks for August.
This brings my total to 1310 for the year.
