Valentine Stitchery

I felt the urge to make a new Valentine’s project this year, and I wanted to do something with embroidery.

I thought about designing something completely new, but I’m still in love with my “Be Mine” Valentine appliqué wall quilt pattern, so I decided to use it to make a little stitchery mini quilt.

Here’s the original appliquéd wall quilt, which measures 20″ x 20″.

For my stitchery version, I reduced the size of the appliqué pattern, and embroidered it. It fits into an 8″ square. Then I used a couple pieces from my stash to add little borders.

This mini stitchery version measures 13 1/2″ x 13 1/2″ finished. The only quilting I did on it was along both edges of the tiny inner border. So simple and fast.

It’s got a 1/2″ (finished) inner border, and a 2″ finished outer border. I cut my binding strips 2″ wide, and used a scrap of Quilter’s Dream Cotton Select Natural batting inside. I used a fat quarter from my stash as the backing.

I used a very pale pink solid for my background, backed it with Pellon ShapeFlex as a stabilizer, and only used three different stitches: outline stitch, backstitch (for the letters), and satin stitch (plus one French Knot to dot the “i”). I used DMC floss — 3 strands for most of the stitching, and 2 strands for the letters.

I thought about making it into a pillow cover; it could very easily be made into a pillow rather than a mini quilt, if you’d prefer having a pillow instead — lots of possibilities!

And you still have time to whip one of these up before Valentine’s day! You can find the “Be Mine” Valentine wall quilt pattern in my Etsy shop, in both print and PDF versions.

Oh, my goodness, your satin stitch is so perfect! I don’t do nearly that well with that one. This is as pretty in the embroidered version as it was in appliqué.

  3. Very cute! I agree with Susan your satin stitch is beautiful!
