The Quilting Experience

My bestie, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, has a new book out. It actually came out in September, but I took time to read all the way through mine before posting about it. It’s so wonderful!

It’s called “The Quilting Experience: A Celebration of Community and Patchwork Patterns”.

This book is a lovely, hard-cover book with soooo many stories included. Stories from quilters about why they quilt, how they got started, special projects they’ve made, what quilts mean to them, fun they’ve had at quilting events or in quilting groups, and so much more.

And there are lots of patterns included! So many lovely quilts and projects to choose from. And if you play around with them, the possibilities for the quilts you can make are endless!

I had the honor of quilting several of the quilts in the book, which always gets me an up-close-and-personal look at each of them. By the time I see them again in the book, they’re like old friends.

I also got to make a couple of blocks for the group quilt, and I have a story included! I talked about my grandmother, and she would be so proud to know that she has her picture with her prize-winning quilt in the book:

The book is so full of inspiring goodness, I can’t even explain it — the stories, the photos, the projects — so much inspiration. I’ve read it all the way through, and looked through it many times over since.

And I started a project of my own — how could I resist?

I decided to use the Bunting block and make an entire quilt out of these fun blocks. Victoria and I are alike in that we do not like to make small quilts, so of course, mine will be large and need many blocks, but I have a good start:

Here’s a progress shot of this same block in the main quilt while I had it on the quilting frame:

There are many other blocks I’d love to try making from this book. I hope I can find the time. The book sure provides the inspiration!

You can get autographed copies of the book directly from Victoria at her website HERE. You won’t be disappointed — this book has it all!

Oh man, don’t get me started on books! I did get my copy already. Who knew we needed this book? A couple of years ago, I donated like 268 books, to friends, family and a book store supporting pets in need. Pretty sure I have added back at least 20…No regrets. I can purge again in 2028!

What a nice memory of your grandmother – and what a lovely giant dahlia. The bunting block looks fun and it must have been fun playing with the different quilting patterns on your friend’s quilt – super to have played a big part in the book too.

I read this yesterday (Fri 11/15) morning, and got it by evening and read first 50 pages and skimmed thru the pictures of the rest of the book. I LOVE it. So many ways to take just 12 blocks and make magic. I had to go back to work 6 years ago so haven’t gotten much quilting done. But when I retire in a couple of years, I will be back at it. In the mean time, reading something like this fills my soul’s need for quilts. BTW I used to live in Mendon, just up Hwy 11 from Brunswick. Also lived north of Macon in La Plata for a while. That’s when I started following your exploits.
