The 350 Blocks Project, 2014

Posted on January 13, 2014 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Popular vote indicated that we should all do this again this year! Are you in?

We’re gonna make another 350 blocks in 2014 (or more, as the case may be with lots of you).350button14

I’m once again hoping to make some more progress on my UFOs. Sometimes, 350 blocks doesn’t even seem to get me much further along! If you have projects you want to push along as well, join me in making at least 350 blocks this year, and see if you can get some of them finished up.

Here’s how it will work:

* Let me know you’re playing along

Simply comment on this post, or contact me to let me know you’re in.

I’ve created a page for the 350 Blocks Project HERE, where I’ll be listing information regarding the project and how it’s progressing. If you’re participating, I’ll put your name (and a link to your blog if you have one) on the project page. You can jump in any time.

If you only want to do some of the months, that’s fine. You’ll be eligible for the prize that month. Can’t start till later? No problem, you can still do the months you’re able to, and you’ll still be eligible for the grand prizes in the end. Just do what you can.

* Report in every month

I’ll still be doing monthly blog posts about the project, where I’ll show you the blocks I get done. When you see one of those posts, you need to leave a comment on it, telling us all about your own progress, and either link back to your own blog post, or at least let me know how many blocks you’ve done. You can also email me directly with your current number of blocks, or use the contact page to let me know. I’ll give you a few days to report in each month, so that you have time to leave your comment and be eligible for the prize, because . . . if you don’t let me know you’re playing along, I won’t know to include you in the drawing!

I’ll post your number of completed blocks next to your name on the project page, so you can see how you’re doing compared to everyone else, and I’ll update it every time you let me know your new number. This is NOT a race, however, and everyone who reports in is eligible for the prizes. I repeat, it’s not a contest, it’s just for fun! Well . . . and prizes!

* Monthly prizes

At the end of each month, I’ll have a prize drawing for those who have made progress that month. I’ll draw one random winner from everyone who reports in that month. What this means is: You MUST report in each month in order to be eligible for that month’s prize drawing. This year there will be only one monthly winner each month, in hopes that I can offer even bigger and better grand prizes at the end this time. Plus it’s a bit less work for me, as this year promises to be busier than last. So . . . I repeat: To be eligible for the monthly prize, you have to report in each month!

* Grand Prizes

At the end of the year, there will be some Grand Prizes. If you actually meet the goal of 350 blocks, you’re eligible for some really grand prizes, and if you don’t quite make it, you’re still eligible to win some prizes just for participating. Everyone who has reported in at least once during the Project is eligible for the Grand Prize drawings.

So are you ready to jump in?

If you’re up for the challenge, let me know you’d like to participate, and you can steal the button above for your blog if you like (which isn’t mandatory, either). Just link back to: <>

Here’s the one rule: You can’t go back and dig through blocks you’ve already made and count those. These have to be blocks you’ve made in 2014, so that you actually get further toward a completed project. You’re on the honor system here. I’m counting on you to be fair!

Good luck to us all!

Ready . . . Set . . . GO!!!!

    Count me in!

  2. Diane Jarvis says:

Of course I want to play!

  3. Deanna says:

I am so in. And not just because I completed 500 blocks last year. And won the grand prize. And felt really successful. No, none of those reasons. I am in because it is FUN! And you are a great encourage-er!

ps–could you send me the code for the button so I can put it in my sidebar? Thanks.

  4. Kathy Garringer says:

I’d like to try this. Anything to pare down my stash.

  5. Kathy Garringer says:

Do you have to start totally from scratch? Example: I had started on a mystery and had parts, like HST done and then put it altogether since the 1st. Is it cheating to count those? I want to play fair.

    • prairiemoonquilts says:

It’s for finished BLOCKS, so even if you already had them started, and they didn’t become blocks until after January 1, you can count them.

  6. Cathy Poyner says:

Thank you for doing this challenge. It is fun to see how many blocks you make each month. I am planning to participate this year.

  7. Sue says:

This sounds like great fun…I am in.

  8. Rose Marie says:

I’ve been sucked in so far and for so long with all the quilting stuff that Shelly gets me into, that I couldn’t possibly back out now. Sorta like rafting down the Colorado River……..rapids everywhere and danger of overturning at every corner. And the current makes it impossible to go back! So let’s hear it for rafting the Colorado again!

  9. Linda Kowalski says:

I have already started counting. Glad I can join in this year.

  10. Janet Volz says:

Sounds like fun count me in

  11. Karen says:

I’m in! It sure looks like a great way to push myself to finish up those quilts. Thanks for doing this!

  12. Barb says:

I’m with Rose Marie–no turning back now!! (And yes, I’ve rafted the Colorado river–wow was it a wild ride!)

  13. Cassandra says:

    I want to play! 🙂 🙂

  14. Andrea O'Brien says:

I am definitely in this year. I didn’t know about this challenge until really late last year, so I didn’t feel like going back and figuring out the block count for last year, so I’m glad you’re doing it again!

  15. Judy says:

Count me in on the 350 block challenge! That should keep motivated.

  16. Kathy says:

Yes mame ; I’m in. Already working on a few lap robes for the cancer center. About 5 tops done but not in quilt form yet. Working on it. Have 1 more to go then I will put them together. All need borders then the tops are complete. Then my quilt guild said they would help me put them together. What I do is baste them and try to machine quilt them. I am just learning to machine quilt, so they are gracious about it. So far no complaints. Nothing fancy. Just squiggles and circles and such. Also stitch in the ditch. Anyway good luck and happy quilting to all. Whether I ever win or not , this is fun. Thanks for doing it.

  17. Cathy says:

Count me in again this year. I met my goal last year, but then slacked off a bit. I’m hoping this year that will change. I have so many projects that I want to work on this year. Plus I’m going to be a grandma in July so of course I need to make a couple baby quilts. 🙂
I’m really glad that you are doing this again this year.

  18. Jenny M says:

Sounds fun to me. I’ll play.

  19. Carol Smith says:

Of course I have to play along. I’m in!

  20. Julie in GA says:

This sounds like fun–count me in!

  21. Susan Bell says:

Count me in please. Since I am wintering in TX I have a lot of piecing time.

  22. Susan says:

I’m in! Already have everything set on my sidebar. =)

  23. Sandy Standridge says:

Thank you. I want to get many quilts made this year and pare down some this material that I have upstairs, downstairs and all around the house!

  24. Heather says:

Hi Shelly, I’m in again this year, though I am planning to stitch fabric postcards instead of blocks, or along with blocks. I received my prize for November just before Christmas. I wrote about it in my post today with a link back to the Challenge.

  25. KatieQ says:

I could really use a way to keep me motivated throughout the year. I usually start strong in January and fade out. I would love to join the blocks project.

  26. Linda says:

I’m in – and already behind. Guess I better start piecing.

  27. Gloria J. Horn says:

So like fun. I followed Linda (Reno) Jarvis on her blocks last year. I’m in maybe this will get me motivated!

  28. K80 says:

Count me and my future 350+ in!!!!

  29. Jane B says:

I was not very good at completing any UFOs last year; in fact I started some new projects that are now on that large UFO list in the sky, BUT I am IN this year and I’m going to meet the goal (if I don’t make too many cute zipper pouches, etc.) 😀 Thanks for hosting this!

  30. Bari says:

I am in! Thanks for the motivation, Shelly!

  31. Nanette S. says:

This sounds like a lot of fun. I have hit the road running this January with 2 new quilts in progress. I can’t wait to actually keep count of the squares done!

  32. Stephanie says:

Okay, last year was a bust, I started sewing clothes and got off track with my quilting UFO’s, I did make a baby quilt and some other blocks but forgot to turn them in. So let’s see if this year I can redeem myself. I definitely want to make a black and white quilt with red sashing for myself, so count me in this year too.

  33. Linda Knight says:

Thought I’d jump in this year. I have made 29 so far in January.

  34. Bobbi says:

I’m in! It was so much fun to keep track of my progress last year. Maybe I’ll even finish 350 blocks this time around!

  35. Susan says:

I think it will be fun to track progress for the year.

  36. Lori says:

Well, I’ve hemmed and hawed long enough, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but count me in. I must be crazy. But then so are all of you, right? 😉

  37. Terri Gross says:

I want to play. Do the embroidered blocks count? I have 5 of them in stages. Including the bees and blooms.

  38. Sheri says:

I would like to take the challenge! Thank you! Do we just give you the number of blocks completed and/or do a blog post about it? I guess I’ll figure it out as we go along!

  39. Katie Z. says:

I think it’s safe to say I won’t be making as many blocks as last year! I’m in!

  40. Celine says:

This is a fun challenge and I’d love to play along. Are we only counting blocks for UFO or any blocks we are making in the month (UFO blocks, BOM, bee blocks etc)? Thanks for having me!

  41. Beth Strand says:

I forgot to tell you that I’m in! Lol…crazy month but I got 81 blocks done! Those string blocks sure add up fast when you’re trying to stay sane in the house with kids on rainy days! I got my prize, too, thank you it’s adorable!

  42. KT says:

I want to join! I really want to get some quilts finished this year and am going to try to keep up with the challenge. Thanks for hosting!

  43. Cindy in ND says:

I’ve never done this before, or anything like it, but I would like to do it this year. Hopefully it will keep me from stalling out like I tend to do. It sounds like fun though, so count me in!

  44. Cala says:

I am late to the party, but I would like to join in!

  45. Barbara Dawson says:

Does each block of a quilt count as different blocks. I am working on at least 4 quilts to do. Two by June and 2 more by Christmas. One will be a postage stamp within a postage stamp quilt. The first one to get done is a Film at Five found on weddingdressblue website.

  46. Mary Streeter says:

I made 12 blocks this month. Mary Streeter

  47. I’d like to join in on the fun! Thanks.

  48. Charlotte says:

My count for February is 90, plus the quilting of 4 Quilts of Valor.

  49. Janet Volz says:

For Feb, I completed 88 blocks.

  50. Terri Gross says:

I have done 6 blocks for Feb. Watch out I am cutting loose in March!! I am going to make it higher than 10!!

  51. KatieQ says:

I finished 149 blocks in February. We were snowbound most of the month so I had the opportunity to do a lot of sewing. I’m sure once spring comes and the snow is gone, my production will be way down so I’m enjoying it while I can.

  52. Michele says:

I’d like to Play. In January I made 10 and in Feb I made 53

  53. Beth Strand says:

Whew…I did so many in January and a whole 11 in February! lol But that’s 11 more done!

  54. Karen says:

I just found this site and it sounds fun. I did 7 blocks in Jan. and 11 in Feb.

  55. Cathy says:

I want to play. I haven’t sewn since before Christmas and I need to get back to work!!

My count for January and February is a big whopping 0.

  56. Pattilou says:

I started with the Tula Pink’s 100 blocks and I haven’t gotten very far, but I got two more donations quilts quilted yesterday so I’m ready again to make more blocks! I’ve sent about 30 blocks off for donation in the last two months, so I’ll do better at counting! Just count me in!

  57. Kathy says:

Ok so far the month of March was VERY busy for me. We just got back home from a trip to the semi finals of the American Dance Awards ADA in Connecticut. Our grand daughter was in them. She is going to the Nationals in July in Orlando. No we will not be able to go to that. However I did get 2 quilt tops done and one completed for a grand total of for March: Drumroll please! 528 squares. yes I was very busy. Sometimes working into the wee hours of the morning. Made 1 queen and one full. resting for a week from our trip and then I have 4 baby and 1 queen and 2 twin to do for April. Yah, good luck on this coming month. My eyes and hands will be stuck to my machine. Why do I do all this for people? Hey, I’m a quilter. Stop me if you can!!!

  58. KatieQ says:

My March total may not be impressive, but I was delighted to complete 51 blocks. I hope I can keep up the pace.

  59. Beth Strand says:

Only 10 blocks for me March. I need to get my little self in gear this month! Although four of those blocks were 24″ and made a quilt top…lol!

  60. Kathy says:

Well April was busy but I did do a little. We opened up the summer cottage as planned. We won’t be moving out there for another month. But needed to air it out for sure. have a lot of work to do out there this year so don’t know how much quilting will be done. I cut and put together 17 rows of 14, 4 1/2″ pieced blocks. I don’t know how you count them, but I count then as 17×14=238. So if you count them as I do it is 238 total. Also I cut out 2500, 2 1/4 inch squares for my cathedral quilt that I am finally going to do. I will take about a year to do this, so I will not be counting this until I am all done. I’m not sure how long it
will take me. I am only doing it a little at a time. The way that I am doing it, will be a lot easier on my arms for a while. I am doing a king size. I do 6 blocks at a time, then I put another 6 together and do them. Next I sew the 2 sections together and finish the in between ones. I repeat this method until it is finished. That way I only do 24 squares at a time. A lot less stress on the arms and hands.

  61. Maxine says:

Count me in! My total is 115.. this sounds like so much fun..

  62. Terri Gross says:

6 blocks done for April. May will be better. I am now working on my machine blocks. Not just stitchery blocks.

  63. KatieQ says:

I managed to finish 37 blocks in April. I accomplished the goal, but I’m disappointed that my pace is slowing down.

  64. Elaine Walker says:

A little late starting, but count me in.

  65. Lori says:

32 in April, I think…hoping to be freeing up time to get some REAL sewing done soon.

  66. Terri Gross says:

Yippee I have 24 done for May.

  67. Barbara Dawson says:

I am reporting 140 blocks. It is very bright and bold colors, I am just tying the quilt. It is going to a lady that lost her home to a fire and has stage 4 cancer. I’ll try to send a picture later.

  68. Karen says:

I just found your block project from KatieQ at Katie’s Salt Marsh Path. I would like to join in. I know the project is half over but it is never to late to start. I always wondered how many blocks I make in a year. So this challenge will help me keep track.

  69. KatieQ says:

Ugh! Only 39 blocks this month. I don’t think August will be much better. Hopefully, I’ll get down to business once the summer is over.

  70. Kathy says:

since April I have done 183 squares in all. I am getting a little better each day. Getting old sucks sometimes. But I am still quilting. Not a lot like I usually do but I’m still doing. I have cut out a lot of squares and hexagons. Using up my scraps for someday. Keeping them in separate containers, so I won’t have a problem when I need them. I mark the plastic containers so I know what’s in them. As you know 2500 is already cut and waiting for me to feel better to do the cathedral, now I just finished 3500 for some hexies. Now cutting out 2 1/2 inches for who knows what. But I’ll have them if needed. It is nice to be back..

  71. Marie says:

I would love to join as I have made over twenty quilts this past year with most full or queen size quilts for my grandchildren and the other half have been donated to the local Friendship quilters or the Quilt for Kids organization. It helps also to see what others are making for ideas to make donated quilts.

  72. Mary Streeter says:

I made 17 maverick stars blocks this month. I did put some of them together to start a quilt, so I am making progress!

  73. Kathy says:

Count for December is 42. Will do it again next year if you want to do it again.
