The 29th Annual

Would you like to go to my quilt show with me?

Well, then, come on! I’ll show you some of the many quilts we had on display at the Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild’s 29th Annual Quilt Show last weekend.

Our show is divided into 11 categories for entry, and the voting is all Viewer’s Choice, so they are voted on by all the folks who come and walk through the show and take the time to pick out their favorites.

I took pictures of all the first-place winners in each category, so we’ll start with those.

In the Small Art Quilts/Wallhangings, first place went to Michele Breault, with her beautifully executed “Spring Flowers for Froggy”. The work on this, in Michele’s usual style, is just flawless — she does the most gorgeous hand work:Michele

In the Large Art Quilts/Wallhangings, Diane Jarvis snagged first place (probably quite easily) with her “Snow Days” quilt. Diane’s embroidery is so well-done, and she obviously gets enough practice! Diane made this quilt using a Crabapple Hill pattern.Diane

In the Baby/Youth Themed category, Michele takes the day again with her “Bunny Hop” mini:Michele2

In the Youth Quilter category (quilts made by quilters under the age of 18), Abby Krog, the granddaughter of one of our long-time members, won first place with her very first quilt! Way to go, Abby! Abby is also present at our show every year, and is a big help with the set up and take down of the show. She’s a hard worker!Abby

The Hand quilted category was won by Anna Ruby and her “Country Love” quilt:AnnaRuby

Jane Eitel’s gorgeous “Log Cabin” quilt won first prize in the Computer Guided Machine Quilted category. The quilting was done by Marsha Yahl. I love this quilt. What a great way to use up some scraps. I may have to make one in my spare time!JaneEitel

In the Hand Guided Machine Quilted category (82″ wide and under), Donna McAdams took first with her “Parcheesi” quilt, which I had the honor of machine quilting for her:DonnaMcA

In the Hand Guided Machine Quilted category (over 82″ wide), This fabulous creation by Alice Allinson, titled “Star Glow”, got the top honor. I wish I had taken a close-up of the quilting on this — it is just incredible. Alice does beautiful machine quilting, all hand guided.Alice

In the Machine Quilted, Mixed Techniques category, “Stitcher’s Garden”, a creation by Carol Cunningham, garnered the blue ribbon. I really like this one, too.CarolC

In our Guild Challenge (for members only) Category, which this year was called “Chain Gang”, another stunning creation by Alice Allinson took the first prize. Just gorgeous, right?Alice2

In our Antique Quilt category, an embroidered quilt owned by our guild president, Di Zook, won the blue ribbon. I think the Antique Quilt category just might be my favorite. I love looking at the old quilts, and we had some beauties this time. Voting was tough in this category.DiZook

Now I’ll go back through and show you a few other quilts from our show.

My sister, Katy, had this entry in the hand quilted category. It’s called “Duck Island Basket”, and the pattern came from one of the Great American Quilts volumes from years back. It’s all hand pieced, too. That Katy is an ambitious one!Katy

My little Double Wedding Ring quilt got a second place ribbon in the wall hangings!MyDWR

Here are a few of the quilts that I quilted for some customers that were hanging in the show.

I quilted a couple for my friend, Linda Kowalski. “Blue Heart Log Cabin”:LindaK2

And “Round Table”. Isn’t this one fabulous?LindaK

I quilted several for my friend, Rose Marie. Rose Marie makes lots of quilts! Here is Old Tobacco Road:RoseMarie

And “One Block Sensation”:RoseMarie2

And “Liberty Waves”:RoseMarie3

There were also several quilts in the show made by some of our retreat attendees, who did the mystery quilt I presented. These quilts were all made from my Charleston Pavement pattern, and I absolutely LOVE seeing all the different color combinations they came up with!

Here’s one from Gyla Elmore:Gyla2

And another one from Gyla. Yes, she’s made two of them!Gyla

And one from Peggy Clark:Peggy

The bed turning at the show drew a large crowd every time it was presented. There were some fabulous quilts shown.

The vendors were a very welcome part of our show. Yes, I did some shopping! Because I needed to. Yes.

And our raffle quilt went to one of the best possible homes . . .

We have a long-time member named Jean, who has had a rough way to go the last year or so, health-wise. She has MS, and suffered a broken bone or two, but her daughter still brought her to see the show in her wheelchair. I stopped to speak with Jean, and she told me that this is the first year that she has been unable to enter a quilt in our show, and she was sad about that. A few minutes later, her name was drawn as the winner of the raffle quilt! I sure hope that helped cheer her up some. And we all know the quilt has the perfect home.

So, there you have it. Another year’s quilt show done and over with, and I think it was a big success. I hope you enjoyed coming along and seeing some of it!

All the quilts are so beautiful, it would be hard to pick a favorite! One of these years I am going to make it there in person. You are right, I think the raffle quilt went to the perfect home! It was an awesome quilt.

It was another great show! They were all so beautiful.

I loved seeing your Mystery Quilts together. (Gyla is quite ambitious.) Let’s hope the rest of the people who took your class will finish them in time for next year’s show and we can dedicate an entire row to you!

    Thanks for posting!

A really nice revue of the quilts and the quilting. It is so much fun each year. I can’t imagine not spending every hour I can in setting it up, enjoying the visitors and the shopping and sticking around to fold it all up!! How can anyone resist!!!

  6. Andrea O'Brien says:

I will finish mine by the next show, for sure. I have it all done except for quilting, which I think I just need to send it off to have done since I don’t think I can do it justice by myself.

It was a great show–such beautiful work that is so inspiring to all of us!
