Studio Organizing, Week 50

Posted on December 10, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

How’d you do last week on a UFO?

I did great! I decided to call my quilt top finished the way it is — I’m not gonna add another border. My Cowboy says I try to make things harder than they otta be anyway, so this is one I’m making easier.

AllaFlutter

I’m calling it done like this, and I’ll do a red or brown binding. I think it’ll be fine like that. What do you think? Good enough? Would you do a red binding or a brown binding? Or maybe blue? Or some other color altogether?

Help me out here — leave me a comment and let me know what you would do for the binding. Never mind that it’s not quilted yet . . .

I’m ready to move on. We only have 3 more tasks left!

This week we are going to:

Clean up the floor in your sewing area

As I was working in my sewing room all last week, I realized . . .

a) I can barely move around in here because of the piles I’ve made in places they shouldn’t be — mainly the floor.

. . . and . . .

b) where did all these thousands of dust bunnies come from? And I can see them even without my glasses on. They’re about to take the place!

So that’s our mission this week.

Have you flung stuff in the floor during a making frenzy?

Have you dropped pins and not bothered to pick them up?

Do you have an entire colony of dust bunnies taking up residence under your cutting table?

Are there piles sitting around that you just need to deal with, but haven’t?

I’m so guilty of all of the above — it’s time to reclaim my space! How about you?

I like the idea of a red binding.
I need to clean my floors, well, I actually vacuumed where I could today.
I did finish my Special Reach UFO http://melsquiltingblog.blogspot.com/2015/12/special-reach-quilt-is-done.html
I also finished the top for my Christmas Bear top.
    It was a productive week.
I have a pile of things that are in front of my cabinets that I need to go through. I won’t get it done this week because there is way too much to do, but I can start on it.
I’ve been working on the rest of the floor area most of the week because it was getting messy. I truly need to find a resting place for the bags of things that I need but only once a month or so.

I think it looks great the way it is. My vote is for red binding

    Red binding!!! My favorite color

Red binding. Or blue. Either will look great. I like it a lot!

Stuff in the floor…ahem. yes. I knocked a box of thread under my table yesterday and was horrified at all the mess under there. No pins, fortunately, since I had to crawl under there. But dust bunnies? Whole colonies. There might’ve been bunny condos and a mall too.

I’ve dealt with quite a few piles, but not really. Have moved them off my table so I could work, but haven’t exactly put them away. Know what I mean? But, I’m sewing. For now, after months of not being able to, that’s good enough. I’ll clean tomorrow. Or the day after. Or maybe the next day…

I think I’d go with brown binding. Did I work on my UFOs? Yes, think I even got one on the list quilted. That’s 2 that need binding now, 1 headed to the longarm a week from Saturday, 2 quilt-as-you go still where they were last week and a UFO pulled out of the bucket with a ‘stash miracle’ backing to be quilted tomorrow night as a hug quilt for a friend. As for the floor — it is getting pretty deep between the ironing board and design wall. And it looks like a quilt threw up in here – my DH says it always does – when I turn around from the computer I can see parts and pieces of at least 6 quilts that all need to be done ‘now’ – not including the fabric pulled and sitting on top the boxes on the shelves. Headed to a school concert in a few, but hopefully I can work on a binding when I get home — or pillowcases….

I think your quilt top is perfect just the way it is. I would go with red for the binding. My sewing room is a real disaster but it won’t get cleaned right away.Too much still going on!

  7. When I was able to walk into my sewing room with my walker, my 13 year old DGS came over and cleared the floors of my computer room, bed room and sewing room. No piles over here.

  8. Barb B says:

Binding: either the same as the background so it “disappears” and leaves the design the focal point or use all the colors in short segments for a “striped” effect that makes it “twinkle”.

My floor has lots of those Beetles. You vacuum and the next day they are back! I’ll be cleaning up those. 🙁

    • Rose Marie says:

I agree with Barb on this. I would do a disappearing binding also. I love how the design sparkles against that beigy background. Let them sparkle!

I don’t want to talk about the piles on the floor!! Some of it has to be wrapped for Christmas. I’ll get to it. I promise.

  9. Red for the binding!! No floor cleaning here until I finish the Christmas stockings I’m making with Minkee!! That stuff sheds like crazy!!!

  10. randy says:

I think scrappy binding. So you could use bits in the quilt. or brown or blue.

i am excited about doing the floor. Only two weeks left!

  11. Susie Q says:

No dust bunnies under the cutting table. There are piles and piles of repo fat quarters, lol.

  12. Virginia Smith says:

I have missed a few weeks mainly because I changed e-mail address so I am back. I like the idea of the binding the same as the background. That thought is not like me my other thought is either the red or blue. My sewing room sure could use a floor cleaning (both sewing rooms) I have two a while; one in the sunroom and the other my regular one. i wish I could say that I have finished a UFO but gone too much lately. Hopefully a better week soon.

  13. A quilting friend of mine was called to a hallway in their house by her husband. He pointed to a very small furry animal coming up the hall. After closer inspection, it was a small frog covered with dust bunnies! Oh boy, did we laugh when we heard that one!

  14. Elna Williams says:

Instead of red or brown, why not go with a sky blue border to pick up all the blues in the quilt. That way the border isn’t more intense than the quilt.

  15. Liz in Houston says:

Love the quilt top and love that it IS a quilt top! Since the background is the final border, IMHO it calls for a dark binding – the color does not matter as long as it is dark.
Thanks for your weekly organizational posts, they were such incentive.

  16. Linda Kowalski says:

I think a disappearing binding would be best. Don’t take away from the quilt.
