Studio Organizing, Week 5

Posted on February 1, 2016 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Did you get your books and magazines under control last week?

I didn’t. Even though I got rid of several, and put away ones I want to keep, I still have more . . . ugh! I’ll keep working on this one over time, too. I will win this battle!

But for now, it’s on to the next task. This week, I’m leaving it sort of open to your own discretion. I want you to:

Organize something that is bothering you

That something is going to be different for each one of us, so you have to do a bit of thinking and decide what one thing about your studio space is bothering you the most by being disorganized right now . . . and DO that thing.

You will feel so much better afterwards, when that nagging feeling is gone, and you can breathe a sigh of relief for having it done and off your plate. You’ll feel a bit more free and hopefully, it will boost your creativity and productivity.

While I have no pictures of mine, I know what mine is. It’s my spare room upstairs. The upstairs of our house is four empty bedrooms that I’m in the process of converting into a full studio. Half of it is done (meaning 2 rooms are finished and being used), the third one is being worked on, but the fourth one — uff! — it’s a complete disaster.

I’m using it as storage right now, until I get the third room finished; then all my stuff will finally once and for all have a rightful place (or be gone). But the storage method I’ve used up till now is “stand at the door and pitch more stuff into the room as far as I can chuck it”. Not a good system.

I started working in there last week, and realized that this would be a good organizing task for me to continue with this week. And then I began to wonder if I’m alone . . . or do you have a particular area that needs help, too? While yours is probably not as bad as mine, if there’s a catch-all spot you have that’s really bugging you, this is the week to address it.

I’m interested in hearing what sorts of spaces/areas/piles you will all be working on this week! Ready. Set. Go!

I have a really small quilt room (about 10 x 10) so it was time to declutter. I did some rearranging this weekend and also cleared my sewing table. Amazing how much more welcoming and refreshing it is. 🙂

I have been chipping away at our junk room as I have 6 people coming to make rope baskets this Saturday and I have usually just 3 people at a time in my sewing room.

Last week’s challenge was perfect! Went through all of my books and made sure they were all accounted for and in alphabetical order. I also went through my project boxes, videos, tools (rulers), and patterns. I keep an excel file inventory of all of them, as well as my stained glass books, patterns, and other craft books. (Can you tell I love books? I think I was a librarian in a former life.)

I purchased a new-to-me sewing table and wasn’t going to get it until spring, but it turns out it could be delivered early–like last Saturday, soooo, I spent the weekend totally rearranging my studio to accommodate it. I moved out 4 pieces of furniture to make room. Wow, has the new arrangement opened up my room! I got almost everything put away except for a small stack of things. I was just too tired to mess with them. I have to do a bit of shuffling of things tonight, but I should be done with it tonight or tomorrow night. Then I can get to sewing!

It was a great weekend, indeed!

Well apart from my studio which is a mess – it has to be continuing with sorting the kitchen, which is taking much longer than I thought. This week I’ll be fitting glass shelves in our dresser cupboards – it’s only taken 16 years for me to get round to it since it was put in – we have put up with chipboard ones til now!

I did ok, but they are not all gone through. But I think it was 2 or 3 months last time to finish this one, so I’ll just keep on keeping on it.

i have a pile of stuff on the edge of the desk.

That’s what I’ll work on this week. It annoys me that I can’t keep it clean.

  6. What luxury to have 4 rooms to set up quilting! But you’re right – if not organized how will one cope in finding anything? Much luck. My task is to clean up to the right of my sewing machine. I hardly have room for a pincushion any more. Just posted about my win. Thanks so much!

I did not get to touch last weeks task but I certainly do need to. It will remain on the To-Do List!! 🙁
This week I need to take care of paperwork on my desk and reduce the quilting clutter that is collecting in the guest bedroom. Yes, my quilting is taking over that room too. Thanks for the motivation Shelly!!!

This challenge is great as it keeps me on task. I have been going through magazines and the books. I took 2 huge bags of books to the hospital.
I still have 2 bookcases to go through.
I am so glad that I am not the only one using 3 rooms for quilting.
I bought a new sewing machine and don’t want to get rid of the old sewing machine, so I am turning a 2nd bedroom into another sewing room. I just don’t have room for 2 machines in one room. So I am trying to declutter old sewing room, big job, and that is where the third room comes in handy for storing extra stuff that I can’t decide wether to give it away.
