Studio Organizing, Week 32

Posted on August 6, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Wow! Only 20 more weeks to go after this one!

I need to step up my game. Someone who was looking at my blog for the first time, saw the post that said “Studio Organizing, Week 27”, and remarked: “It’s taking you 27 weeks to organize your studio!?!?!”

I had to laugh. My reply was: “Oh, it’s gonna take a lot more than that.” I explained to her that this is an ongoing series of tasks designed to help me (and hopefully others) get and keep control of the mess that is my sewing stuff. I’m not sure I’ll ever be done, since I have a real talent for messing it up as soon as I clean it!

But none of you are like that, right?

I eradicated the pile I showed you last week. It’s down to a very respectable pile of only 3 quilt tops, all of which I plan to quilt very soon. Maybe after this I can keep it cleaned off. I don’t know why any flat surface is such an invitation for making a huge pile!

But we need to move on now. This week’s task is:

Clean up and back up your computer files

This may seem odd for a studio organizing task, but if you’re anything like me, you have a LOT of files related to sewing on your computer.

All those pattern PDFs you’ve downloaded, free tutorials you’ve bookmarked, any lists or files you’ve typed up to keep track of things . . . it’s time to get them organized and backed up.

I know I have a lot of files that just need to be organized into folders. Lots that could be trashed. Most need to be backed up, just in case. Yes, it CAN happen to you! It recently happened to My Cowboy. He’s still whining over missing ranch files he’s having to rebuild!

I know I would hate to have to rebuild any of my important files if I lost them, so it’s really much easier to be safe than sorry, right? Who has time for RE-doing stuff? I certainly don’t! There are quilts to make, for pity’s sake!

So . . .

Do you have any wayward files that need to be taken care of?

Do you have a regular system for making backups so that you don’t lose important things in the event of a system crash?

Can you easily find those PDF patterns when you’re looking for them?

Can you get back to that cool website you saw last week and wanted to visit again?

That’s our task for this week. I know it’s gonna take longer than I think it will, too.

Let me know how it goes for you.

I’m bad about that and I need to work on it. Not enough time to get it done this week, but maybe I can get some of it done

Ummmmm…… Hmmmm…. I am going to keep eradicating piles I think. Considering getting a long arm setup but don’t really have the space. Then questioning if I want to fill up that space again when I finally get it cleared out….

This really needs to be done at my house. I want a computer to be like a light bulb………….just flip the switch and everything works. Light bulb out………..oh no! And what if it is a bulb in a light fixture at the top of a 15 foot ceiling!! One really needs to have an extra bulb and a step ladder. Yep, I gotta do this one. Now to find those spare thumb drives. Where are they? I’ll get back to you.

  4. What do you back up on? I bought a drive for that purpose, but could never get it to work.

Oh, good task to get done! I’ve never backed-up my blog before, so I’ll do that.

I cleaned up a stack of fabric from a couple of projects that I completed but I created another stack of quilts to be quilted. I know I shouldn’t even say this to you but I am getting behind on my quilting again I have 5 quilts that need quilting. Have been trying all year to keep to just a couple.

I am very good at backing up our farm books but that is about all. My quilting patterns are spread all over – just like my sewing – on my ipad, home computer and my computer at work (shhh don’t tell anyone that I look for quilts when I should be working đŸ™‚ ) I will try and consolidate them all on a thumb drive.

Something I really need to do. won’t happen all in one week, but….

  8. My answers to your questions are: Yes and No, No, Sort of, and Maybe. I need to delete the 100s (no exaggeration) of patterns in my hard drive that I’m quite sure I’ll never make. On the bright side, I don’t download all the free patterns I used to. I’ll definitely use your challenge this week to try to clean up my PDFs.
