Studio Organizing, Week 22

Posted on May 28, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

I think I bit off more than I could chew last week!

This is as far as I got on my closet:

closet2

It’s emptier, but not even completely emptied out yet! I’ve been a little lacking in motivation this week. Send help — send me some mojo!

Yet here we are — it’s already time for this week’s task, which is:

Clean out a fabric bin

I have many of these. Many. Some of them aren’t even bins. They’re boxes, bags, piles, you name it. Many. Too many.

My goal is to tackle just one of them.

I’ve chosen this one to start with:

fabricbag

I’m trying to get all the bags, bins, and boxes sorted, purged, organized, and whittled down into fewer bins. A LOT fewer bins.

You know what the real trick will be for me as I do this?

NOT starting a new project because I’m playing in my fabric!

How about you?

Do you have a fabric bin, box, pile, bag or something that needs to be reorganized? Sorted? Purged? Cleaned out?

Try to do it without starting a new project. Just try. I know it’ll be hard.

I’ll be back next week to fill you in on what project I started how I tamed this sack of scraps!

  1. I have a room full of boxes and bags. It seems hopeless. Right now I’m tackling a shelf full of magazines. So far I’ve discarded 8 and kept 4. Wish me luck – have a jillion to go.

Ironically, I did a tiny box last night. Looking for an empty project box (so I could fill it up), I declared the 2 blocks from the 2010-2011 guild BOM orphans (I only have about 4 of the block patterns and no finishing instructions). They went into the orphan block box, and the focus fabric back into the stash.

Well, I have a mess from last week. I will continue to work on that one too.
But, I am working on my white and purple scrap storage. I don’t have other fabric sitting around in bags or bins not already sorted.

I have a file box of really old sewing scraps, some dating back to BQ (before quilting). At one time I purged all the non cotton, non woven fabrics and I have used some of the fabric, but then added to it as well. Not sure I can tackle it in one week, but I’ll try sorting light from color/dark (Bonnie Hunter’s method) and see how far I get. Note: this is not the only scrap bin I own.

You know and we all know that scraps (mingle) for a nice word. Ok they mate. I started out with only 1 bin. Now I have 5. It is a never ending lost battle. I have put mine down in the basement with markings on them the let me know which bin is in which color family. When I am done with a project I take the useable scraps and trot downstairs and put them in their right bin. The smaller pieces I put in a bag and when that is full, really full, I make a dog pillow. Now I am rearranging my sewing room. That in itself is a long project. I’m bagging up, boxing up, and giving a lot of stuff away to Goodwill. I am tired of the mess. Wish me luck. I’ll need it.

Oh not doing a lot of sewing this month. So here is my check in. I did 16 blocks for a friend. She is putting the rest together.

My project this week was wrestle the batting scraps and stash into submission and off the floor. Done! Trimmed and measured scraps into usable pieces, labeled with their size and stored in a hanging closet organizer. Large batts still on the floor, but in a laundry basket, so not subject to as much moisture.

Just one question – How do you whittle done a bin if you don’t start a new project? 🙂

I made a little progress on last weeks job. I cut all of my flannel into 5 1/2 squares to make into baby blankets. Anything that was to small is gone. Hopefully find time to make a couple in June to donate to church.

I think I will work on my bag of fleece for this week.

New fabric means a need to find a place to put it where I later find it. Some organized, BOM finished, and guild block finished. At least a few things in better order.

  10. Cindy says:

The question is which one to tackle. Last weeks was too ambitious……didn’t get too far on that one.

  11. Deanna says:

Maybe don’t start a project, but definitely set the pieces aside to make one. Once you have finished, that is. It will be a well-earned reward for working hard.

  12. Barb B says:

Great project! I have about 5 bags to go through. I’ll see how far I get.

    Thanks for the challenge!
