Studio Organizing, Week 17

Posted on April 23, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Last week’s task was easy for me, and I loved hearing all of your ideas on how you store your rulers. I don’t think any two of us store them just alike!

This week’s task is another fairly simple one, but one that I need to do just for my own peace of mind:

Clean up the area around your sewing machine

This is how mine looks right now:

sewingmachine

This is not a very large area, so it gets messy quickly, and makes it very uncomfortable to keep sewing with little items scattered all about. (This doesn’t show the stuff that has already fallen off in the floor, either!)

I’m going to put these things away and clean this up, so I’ll feel better about sitting down to sew here.

What about you?

Do you keep your sewing machine area neat as a pin at all times?

Or do you have to regroup every once in awhile like me?

When we’re snowbirding, my machine is in a Sew-EZ table so space is limited. At least it’s in its own room so I can keep multiple projects out. I clean up the machine table at the end of every day and set up for the next session – clean out lint, check bobbin thread, close all sharp tools, decide what I might want to work on and gather cut pieces to start sewing. At our primary residence I have a Koala cabinet with tons of space around the machine so it’s more of a challenge to keep the area clean. I try, but it’s a struggle. Thanks for all the inspiration these many weeks of clean-up!

I have several machines (stop laughing Shelly) that I use for different purposes. They all seem to have the pieces to their current project next to them. Kind of drives me crazy, so I probably should come up with a new course of action.

  3. Hmmm. You don’t give yourself much sewing space to the left of your machine. The right side of my machine is cluttered and I need to deal with that. I tend not to as I have about 2o inches to the left of the machine. Good challenge for the week.

I have my sewing machine on a 4 ft table. It is 30 inches deep. I have to have the room. I could not sew in such a small area. I don’t know how you do it. I sew all the time. At least 2-3 hours a day. I don’t do just quilts. I also do 2 ft teddy bears. And I also make some doll clothes for the American girl doll, aprons, and a lot of other stuff for craft shows. Also every baby gets a quilt, an afghan, a sweater set and a Teddy Bear. So I spend a lot of time in there. It relaxes me. I have a LOT of nieces and nephews and friends kids are having kids. So I am quite busy.

My space is fairly good, but….it is always in need of something.

I so appreciate these challenge areas. It makes me look at things differently and allows me to improve my space.
    Thank you.

Hmmm. This makes me think of when we were doing Flylady years ago. Remember trying to keep the kitchen sink clean every day? I’m still working on that one. I love a clean house, a clean kitchen, a clean quilting area. But let’s face it folks. Stuff happens in those places. And then there is the yard, and the office at work and the church kitchen, and the roadsides along the way to work. If God had meant the world to be absolutely perfect, he wouldn’t have invented dirt. Or people. And dogs. See where do we find the perfection. LOL

  7. Rose Marie says:

That wasn’t any help for anyone, was it?

  8. Sue Hook says:

My sewing space by my machine is very small the only thing that accumulates on it is bobbins, pins and lots thread/dust. It would not hurt for me to give it a good dusting under neither and behind – maybe put away a few bobbins.

  9. Linda Knight says:

If my granddaughter didn’t have so many project needs my area wouldn’t be a mess because I am usually a one project at a time girl but….. So I finished her project today and cleaned up the sewing table ready to start a new one.

  10. Mine seems to always be a mess and I have a men’s shaving kit that I keep all my stuff in – and constantly paw through! I made myself a mat with clear vinyl pockets which really helps keep everything in order and easy to find. I posted about it near the bottom of this post: http://farmquilter.blogspot.com/2015/04/ive-been-busy-getting-things-done.html

I do try to keep things tidy around my machine, mostly because of my cat who prowls around, getting into things! But this was a good opportunity to change things up a bit. Thanks for the push!

  12. I recently cleaned and reorganized my entire sewing room (as you know), including the area around the sewing machine. It’s such a joy to sew again!
