Sew A Jelly Roll Day

Posted on September 16, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Give-Aways

This coming Saturday (the 18th) is National Sew A Jelly Roll day! It’s always the third Saturday in September, and it gives us all an excuse to break open one of those lovely rolls and start a new project, right?

This year, Moda is offering up FIVE new free jelly roll quilt patterns, available through quilt shops only, to give you some great ideas for quilts to make using jelly rolls. Click HERE for all their inspiration.

Seriously, there is lots of jelly-roll-quilt inspiration out on the internet to be found! If you need info on making a Jelly Roll Race quilt, click HERE.

I like to go through my bin of pre-cut 2 1/2″ scrap strips about this time every year, and make my own jelly roll, and sew up a quick Jelly Roll Race quilt for charity. Here’s one I made a few years back from all my cowboy fabric scraps:

I still have a couple others in my to-be-quilted pile that I need to finish up and get donated (but that won’t be happening this Saturday).

This year, I made TWO scrappy jelly rolls from my pre-cut bin, and am so excited that the lid now fits back on the container!

But since I’m not sewing too much these days, I’m offering them up to YOU!

I’m giving away each of these homemade jelly rolls (doesn’t that sound yummy?). I’ll pick two winners on Saturday, the 18th. All you have to do for a chance to win one of them is leave a comment on this post.

One of them is darker, fall colors:

The other is brights:

The fabrics are not really all Moda or Dear Stella, but those are the ribbons I had. My Cowboy had to help me tie them up, since I’m working one-handed these days, so they’re not real pretty, but they will sure make a quilt! There are 40 strips in each roll. After helping me with the first one, he painfully asked: “How many of these are we gonna have to do???” He let out a huge sigh of relief when I told him there were only two!

Do you have a favorite go-to jelly-roll quilt pattern? What would you do with one of these jelly rolls? Leave your comment for a chance to win one!

UPDATE: The winners are . . . KT and Judy S. Thanks so much to everyone who played along! There will be more give-aways soon, so stay tuned.

I’d use the jelly roll to make Pinwheel Party! 🙂 And those brights are just right for a party!

  4. KatieQ says:

I like to make baby quilts using framed 4 patch blocks made from jelly roll strips. They go together really quick and I can make more than one from a jelly roll.

  5. Kathleen says:

If I won I would make some nine patches and set them on point. I belong to 2 Guilds and we sew lots of comfort quilts and quilts of valor

  6. Laura says:

I’d like to make a rail fence or a jelly roll strip quilt to donate to a child. Play with the colors until it’s just right and see the little ones face light up with their very own quilt.

  7. Paula says:

I have to admit I have a number of jelly rolls and have never unrolled or untied any of them! They are just so fun to look at. Same with my other precuts. Thinking about using them (heart is racing) next year as a challenge. They are beautiful, good quality fabrics that will make outstanding looking quilts, but… Anyone else like me out there?

  8. Deanna says:

So many quilts are possible with a jelly roll. I have a number of patterns just waiting to be tried. Thank you for the offer.

  9. Christi Bentley says:

  13. Vicki in MN says:

I recently bought a Villa Rosa pattern that uses 2.5″ strips, I might just whip that one up! Thanks for the chance to win one of yours!

  14. Sharon Gratz says:

I’ve been needing a few ‘mindless’ patterns and if there’s a pattern any mindless than the Jelly Roll Race, I don’t know what it is! I’ve already pulled red/neutral/blue for the QAL at WDB, so will need to need to see what else will strike my fancy. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully you’re healing is going well.

We have just moved from Texas to Oklahoma. My fabric is in storage. Please pick me, thank you.

I like the Jelly Roll Race III. Those little triangles really make it sparkle. That’s probably what I would make unless something else catches my eye. 🤔

I have never been able to figure out what to do with my jelly rolls. I have several, but nothing really appeals to me. I do like the Family Gathering one from Moda.

  24. Doreen says:

What a fun idea! thanks Shelly

  25. Amanda M. says:

The original Jelly Roll Race quilt is what I would make out of them. It’s easy, shows off the fabric and small enough for Project Linus. I need to do one from my stash…

  26. Ginny says:

Log cabin is great from a jelly roll. I’m into brights to make grandchildren quilts so that would be my aim. For me they are the perfect width for binding so I use them as bindings or in a pinch even 2 1/2” squares

  27. Donna says:

I enjoyed sewui uiing the baby quilt I made from pastel solid pastels. I’m ready to make another one.

  28. Sandra Famuliner says:

I always enjoy the jelly roll race at our guild retreats.

  29. Jackie says:

What a fun idea! The fall one would be perfect for your little leaf blocks.

  30. Karen says:

I love your Cowboy quilt, with all it’s varied lengths and fabrics. I’ve never done a jelly roll race quilt yet, so I’d like to try that. Seems like it would be quick and fun to make. Thank you for doing this. It’s very kind of you and hope your arm heals quickly.

  31. Marlene Clausen says:

I just have to unroll those rolls to see all the pretty fabrics and, then, I have to try to corral the strips until I make something. My favorite pattern is Puzzle Box, a free pattern by Christa Watson. It has almost zero waste.

  32. Barbara W says:

A Jelly Roll Strip and Flip. I like the ease of making it and picking a contrasting fabric to highlight it.

  33. Judy S. says:

Rail Fence or star Twist are my favorite jelly roll patterns. Your fall colors are pretty. Hope you are healing rapidly.

  34. Pam Desilets says:

  35. Jill Davies says:

Great fun facts that I didn’t know about jelly rolls. I own quite a few rolls but they are so pretty that I don’t want to unroll them.

  36. Joan says:

Just downloaded the IKAT free pattern for jelly rolls and then read your post about jelly rolls! Great cowboy quilt. It’s amazing how you keep busy despite your injury–I hope you have a speedy recovery.

  37. Darlene says:

Hi Shelly, This is such a thoughtful give away would love to have some of your fabrics to put in a quilt. Some of the best fabrics have been ones shared with fond memories. Hope you are healing quickly. Thank you for making this a fun weekend.

  38. Kristy Perkins says:

I just love jelly rolls! I too have a few that I just stare at for inspiration, they are so pretty. I have made several creative quilts, tote bags, all given as gifts and charity. (I confess, I kept one of the tote bags for myself). Thank you for this opportunity and hope that you will quickly be able to get back to your normal sewing routine and all goes well.

  39. Paula Mu says:

I usually let the fabric help me pick the pattern for a jelly roll. Some fabrics really call for a particular pattern. A jelly roll race is always fun. I like the strips 20 inches however. Hope you get better soon, Shelly.

  40. Beverly Hoek says:

    Love, love, the fall colors!

  41. I like to frame blocks or sew strips and cut into squares, then HSTs before putting them back together. I am always looking for unique designs/patterns to use jelly rolls in.

  42. I’ve made lots of quilts from jelly rolls, but if I have to pick a fave it would be the Jelly Roll Race quilt. That one goes together quicker than any others I’ve tried and it creates a very cool pattern, so if you need a quilt fast, that’s the one to make. If I win one of these jello rolls, I think I’ll do the Jelly Roll Race.

  43. Jackie says:

I’ve participated in a jelly roll race once. So much fun. I’m making quilts for the new Afghan refugees.

  44. connie richards says:

I will sew another jelly roll race quilt tomorrow, they are fast and FUN, my sisters & I just donated 30 quilts to Ronald McDonald House this week, 20 chemo quilts and 7 quilts to True North (this is what we did to get thru Covid 19). Hope you heal fast and take care of your cowboy.

  45. Carol Collier says:

I like to make nine patch, log cabin, or postage stamp quilts from jelly rolls. I love looking at all the jelly roll patterns for inspiration! Thanks for the opportunity!! Get well soon!!

  46. Rowena Aguallo says:

Quilt looks great and what a great idea to use up those few strips that are leftover. I love to make Log Cabins blocks with jelly roll strips. Each one comes out unique. Thanks for offering this giveaway.

  47. Diane says:

Wow what a fabulous response! I wanted to thank you for sharing the Moda post with all the inspiring quilts – sew much fun.
