September Studio Organizing, Task Two

Posted on September 26, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Well! I thought that last task would be easier than it turned out to be. My goal was simply to clean out one file drawer. I’m about halfway through it.

I have gladly thrown away a lot of useless stuff, and have also put away a lot of stuff that was sitting out, but I still have a ways to go. I’ll keep at it. It feels good to be making progress.

One reason it’s taking longer than I thought it would, is that I’m not only just cleaning it out, I’m re-organizing it to make more sense, so I’m rearranging folders, adding some new ones in, taking some old ones out, etc. This way, maybe I can file stuff more easily in the future, and avoid having piles gather on flat surfaces. If I make it easier to use, I’ll be more likely to use it, right?

The drawer I chose to clean out first is the bottom drawer, and I pulled it open to get started, then just took off walking like it wasn’t there, and tripped over it! Now I have a bruise on my leg to go with my broken elbow — I’m such a menace to my ownself, it’s not even funny. My Cowboy has more than once made the remark: “I see Assisted Living in your future.” Hahaha! (He could be right! My poor daughters.)

For our next task, I went back to the cards:

This is something I’ve been needing to do, anyway. One thing I can do fairly normally, even with my broken elbow, is handwork. I’ve whipped down the binding on a quilt, and decided to embark upon a 100-Day project of hand embroidery. I’ll show you more of it later, but here is Day 3:

I’m planning to do some small random motif each day for the rest of the year. And I’m not 100% sure what I’ll be doing with them yet, but I do have an idea, so stay tuned.

To that end, I need to get my hand-sewing supplies in better order, so this is a good task for me. I have several zip pouches to clean out, some embroidery thread to organize, and a good way to organize this current project, so I’ll have plenty to keep me busy.

How about you? Do you do handwork at all? If so, do you need to clean out your sewing box(es)? If you are not a handwork aficionado, then feel free to choose any other task for yourself this time.

And before I go, I want to bring this to your attention:

Kim and Tom, over at Feel Good Fibers, are once again hosting their Declutter to Destash Challenge. It begins October 7th, and if you officially sign up, there are prizes! It’s a great way to get yourself some accountability as you clear out your sewing space — fall cleaning!

I needed a break from quilting so decided to finish something I started probably 30 years ago! Hand made Snowman felt Christmas ornaments. It’s been fun to do all this handwork. May find some more to do.

Thank you so much for sharing this here! We are so excited for Declutter to Destash to begin on the 7th!

I think the answer to your injuries is you need to be wrapped in bubble wrap from head to toe!

I didn’t even touch anything resembling paperwork and my hand sewing items are in pretty good shape. I have a lot of bits and pieces of embroidery floss that I ought to get used up. I hope to get many things done but my motivation is often fleeting.

I didn’t have too much problem with paper files but have been more attentive to cleaning up the sewing room when I finish something. My problem with handwork is that I have it in separate bins for each type of handwork. A basket for quilt binding and general sewing, a cotton applique kit and a wool applique kit. Looks like I could combine them but not sure how.

I missed the elbow post. That has to hurt and put a huge damper on your quilting progress. Ouch! So sorry, Shelly!
I had a full knee replacement on September 15, and had 4 quilts ready to bind while recuperating. I am on the last one, and that is the only handwork I do.

But this reminded me that I have a little Edyta Sitar prefused butterfly quilt to appliqué! Now to be able to go down the stairs to find it!

  6. I have so many hand sewing containers around here. I don’t even remember what is in each one. So, this is perfect to have me look at each one. If there is a project, great, I’ll keep the container and put one in the car and truck to have with me at all times. If it doesn’t have a project, I’ll put the items away to be used when they are needed.

Love your little embroidery! My hand sewing needs a look at but currently I have my sewing room in the midst of rearranging furniture I started on the spur of the moment. It’s keeps becoming a bigger and bigger project.😱Including the garage, downstairs bathroom and under the stairs…now I know why I’ve been avoiding starting. Hopefully I will get a bunch purged, some reorganization and better workstation. I’m blaming it all on you…it was that 100 things list that prompted this, 😂
