Scrappy Wild Geese

This past week, I finished a big project I’ve been working on all this past summer. I was on track to have it finished during the first week of September, but life had other plans for me right around then, so I’m only just now getting it done!

This quilt was made for The Prairie Moon Quilts Necktie Social Project. If you haven’t heard of it, you can read more about it starting HERE.

The quilt is from my pattern, Scrappy Wild Geese (see details below), with a few modifications I had to make, since I was using neckties to make it.

I had to make the blocks a bit smaller than the original quilt, and use regular quilting cottons for the large side triangles, since neckties do not yield pieces large enough. I also added sashing and cornerstones this time.

I used all one background fabric to unify the top. Some of the Flying Geese units were pieced by Julie C., who graciously volunteered to help out with the Necktie Social Project.

I custom quilted it with petals in the side triangles and the center squares.

It’s got a label, even!

And the backing is a wide backing by Kim Diehl that I thought fit it perfectly. The border and binding fabrics came from my stash.

This quilt is being donated to the Greensboro Woman’s Club in Greensboro, NC. The Club is very active in their community, helping animal shelters, homeless, schools, the environment, backpack programs, the Heart Association, Relay for Life, providing food for the needy, and many other things.

One of their committees is an Environment committee, and one of their projects this past year was to collect and recycle neckties, and they were kind enough to donate 405 neckties to the Necktie Social Project to be used in quilts for charitable causes, so we are more than happy to donate this quilt back to them!

They meet in this wonderful house, the Weir-Jordan House, which they also rent out for events:

They plan to raffle off the quilt, and we are all hoping that the quilt brings in lots of funds to help with their many projects and upkeep on their historical meeting place.

Here’s the original Scrappy Wild Geese quilt from my pattern:

So cool! I bet it’s nice to have one of your own done! I also really like the difference the sashing and corner stones make compared to the original.

  2. It’s wonderful! What a difference it makes to go from totally scrappy to your latest version. Both are beautiful, but each can appeal to a different sense. It’s what I love about quilting…our ability to modify and create an entirely new outcome. Well done!

This just seemed so familiar………….I scrambled through my “Shelly” stuff. I have made one of these. Didn’t we do it originally in a day retreat? It was a great introduction to making your quilts.

Stunning! That is one of the most beautiful cohesive necktie quilts I have seen. And what a labor of love. Those ties are testy to work with. Impressive. Now I want to make one too!
