Quilts, Goats, and Other Stuff

I’ve been chipping away at lots of projects, and a few of them finally got to the completed stage this week. I feel like I’ve been sewing in slow motion, so to have a few things done and off my plate feels pretty good!

I finished this flower pillow that I started a couple years ago in a class at Sew Sweet Quilt Shop with Renee Nanneman from Need’l Love. I had the front all finished, so all I had left to do was sew the back onto it and stuff it and add a button. I think it’s really cute, and I plan to gift it to Mother Outlaw next time we see her. I can only hope she likes it — she’s kind of persnickety peculiar “particular”.

I made a bunch more Rail Fence units. I still haven’t counted how many I have made, but I need at least 400 of them, and I’m trying to use up all the strips I pulled out for that purpose, so I may end up making more than that!

And I started a new project this week, because I didn’t have anything else to do. I’m making this:

Because I’m not allowing myself to buy any fabric this year, I’m making it completely from my stash, so I hope my grand plan for the colors I chose works out OK. More on that later. If you’d like to make one, too, it’s the Star Storm pattern by Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and you can get it HERE. It’s been super easy so far!

Victoria also has some new template sets that just came out, called “Snack Sets”, and I cannot wait to get my hands on a set of them! See them HERE.

I also bought THIS pattern from V. and Co. I mentioned it before, and how much I like it, but Vanessa put it ON SALE! and that pushed me over the edge.

And last week, Jeni Baker at In Color Order posted this Heart Crossed Throw Quilt tutorial, and I’m so in love with it, too, I might have to make one. Remember, I’m on a scrap quilt mission this year, and this is another good one for the scraps!

On Monday, our guild is having the big reveal of all of our finished mystery quilts we did last year. I’ve had my top finished for months, so I decided I’d better get it quilted, since the showing is Monday.

I chose to quilt it with a grid all over because I thought that would go faster than a pantograph. In case you’re wondering, it does NOT go faster than a pantograph! What was I thinking?

We used the Scrappy Irish Chain pattern by Jessie Fincham for our pattern. She graciously agreed to let me break it down into steps that we could use as a mystery, and I really like how the ones I’ve seen are turning out. It’s a free pattern that you can get HERE, if you’d like to make one yourself. I actually have a second one started, because it’s a fantastic way to use up lots of 2 1/2″ scrap squares! I’m so in love with Jessie’s version — the colors look so soft and cuddly.

And I finally got the binding on the three quilts I made for our niece and nephews! They’ve all outgrown the quilts I made them when they were smaller, so I made each of them a larger throw quilt now that they’re bigger. Here’s all three quilts hanging together:

I made baseball/football-themed quilts for the boys. My Cowboy picked out the fabrics. We started with a  baseball-themed layer cake, and then he picked fabric from all their favorite baseball and football teams. Well, those colors and fabrics all don’t go together so great, but I did the best I could. Here’s one:

And here’s the other:

I just made giant half-square triangles from some of the fabrics, and put some plain squares in with them, and arranged them in different patterns so they wouldn’t be exactly alike.

Then I made Addison a Frozen quilt from a panel. Her dad assures me she’ll love it!

They’re all backed with Minky, and I quilted them all with an all-over meander. They should be good and snuggly!

While I was out taking the pictures, a crowd gathered:

They say cats are curious, but cats don’t have nothin’ on cows and goats (and even horses) for curiosity!

But look at my babies nearly a year old! See how big the twins have gotten? I could always tell them apart, but since they’ve gotten older, Sugar (on the left) developed a little black mane down her neck, and Flower’s cheeks turned brown, so now it’s really easy to tell them apart.

They’ve come a long way since this day last spring. No way they’ll fit into a bucket together any more!

That’s Dottie on the very far left in the above picture, and Pepper on the far right. We didn’t think Pepper was able to become pregnant any more, but if she’s not pregnant right now, we have serious problems! She looks like she’s about to explode! I hope she holds off till at least mid-March to have any babies, though. Winter isn’t over, and I don’t want anyone getting frostbite.

And here’s my other little girl from last year, Bella — all grown up and beautiful:

That’s been my week! Our weather has been anywhere from 16 to 62 degrees, and we even had a day of snow — typical Missouri.

What have you been up to?

I need to follow your example and no new fabric and finish project in progress.
Love the goats, the babies, sweet.

I have been storm locked. I had an art quilt ( self portrait that used some of this rather boring red in it…) I got a version done…and they cancelled the meeting. I designed and finished one more Penobscot County block ( Steven Kings house) than started on Dorothea Dix…I found that pink valentine quilt also with the wonky crosses and have it in my air traffic control circling. I said yes to a three day retreat in Jackman Maine 135 for everything… food etc.. Sorry I could not resist…10 inches of snow tomorrow.

  3. Love the pillow. That’s a lot of rail fence blocks! That mystery is so colorful. And those goats are so lively. Do you milk them?

I just love your goats. Pepper is just gorgeous such a sweetie. They had goats up the end of our road and I thought they were awesome pets. I think your pillow came out great, congrats for finishing a UFO!

Hey, I have Victoria’s star pattern too…maybe we can nudge each other to get it made? 😉

I am love with your goats. I think they’re hilarious creatures anyway. Poor Pepper looks like she’s eaten a turkey.
