Pink Petals Baby Quilt

Posted on March 28, 2022 by prairiemoonquilts in Quilts, Tutorials

It all started with this . . .

Going through a random bag of scraps that I had put aside for some unknown reason. Why did I even save something like these? What did I think I was going to do with them? Where did they come from?

At the time, I can assure you, I did not have a plan.

But coming across them later, I laid them out, and an idea struck me.

I decided that I would appliqué them down onto little squares and make flowers out of them:

There were exactly 32 of the little white pieces, which would make 8 sweet little flowers.

And my sister had just dropped off a huge bag of scraps she was getting rid of, and in the top of the bag was a huge pile of pink fabrics.

I pulled them out, added some of my own scraps, and cut enough squares to make this sweet baby quilt top:

I’m calling it Pink Petals, even tho the petals are the only thing NOT pink in this quilt!

And it was so easy, I’m gonna give you all the details right here, in case you’d like to make one, too.

The quilt finishes at 40″ x 50″. You can certainly make it larger and even add borders, if you wish.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Scraps in your chosen color to equal approximately 2 1/4 yards.
Small scrap of white for the petals.
Even smaller scrap of yellow for flower centers.
Petal and flower center templates, which you can download here: PinkPetalstemplates
1 1/2 yards for backing, if you can make the width work, or 2 2/3 yards if you can’t (also depends on if your backing is a directional print or not).
1/2 yard for binding.
48″ x 58″ piece of batting.

Here’s what to cut:

320 3″ squares from the colored scraps
32 petals from white, using the petal template
8 circles from yellow, using the flower center template

Here’s what to do with it all:

Cut the petals and flower centers using the templates (above). Add seam allowances if you are doing needle turn (not necessary if you are fusing them down).

Applique each of the petals onto a square, using your preferred method of appliqué.

Join 4 of the petals together into a 4-patch with all the petals pointing toward the center.

Applique the flower center over the center point. Make 8 of these.

Sew all the rest of the pink squares into 4-patches. Make 72 of these.

Lay out all the pink 4-patches with the flower blocks in an arrangement that suits you, using eight 4-patches per row, and making ten rows.

Sew the pieces in each row together.
Sew all the rows together.

And that’s it! It’s so simple and quick (trust me, it is, or mine wouldn’t be finished)!

I haven’t quilted mine yet, but I will be doing that soon, because it has an intended destination already. I’m putting another piece of the pink my sister was giving away on the back, and using this for the binding:

I had this binding prepped for a different quilt, but when I finished the other quilt, I didn’t like this binding for it, so I had it leftover, and it’s gonna work perfect for this one — happy accident!

It’s a lot of pink, but I love it!

This is fantastic! I love when trying to use something up inspires a finished item that is better than we could have planned it if we had started from scratch. Wonderful job!

Such a cute quilt! I keep finding myself doing the same thing…starting new projects as I go thru my scraps. I’m not getting them sewn up like you are so the overall abundance continues. Good that you have a home for your sweet quilt! WIN all around for you!

This quilt is a great idea to make and have on hand and ready to give. Could be leaders/enders and the petals would be good for a travel hand project.
