Peggy’s Baltimore Garden

The most recent custom quilt to come off my frame is this gorgeous creation by my customer, Peggy B.

The pattern is Baltimore Garden by Barbara M. Burnham.

There is so much wonderful appliqué on this quilt, and Peggy’s stitches are perfection!

There wasn’t much I could do with the quilting to make this any more epic than it already is; but Peggy and I discussed some options for the various parts, and here’s what we came up with.

I decided to make each block look as if it was in a circle.

Then I filled in between the circles with another outline and some crosshatching. I love when the afternoon sunlight glows up the quilting. Doesn’t this almost look like velvet??

Along the edges, I used curved crosshatching.

Can you even believe all this appliqué??

In the border, we decided not to quilt over the swags, and to put straight lines in the outer edge portion. On the inside edge portion, I did a feathery swirly filler.

On each block, I simply outlined the appliqué. And I tried not to quilt over any appliqué pieces, except some of the larger flower centers, so as not to leave a large unquilted area. And yes, I quilted each little square inside that basket individually. I figured if Peggy put so much time and attention into the detailed appliqué, then I could certainly put a little time and attention into the quilting details.

Where there was a gap in the appliqué, I did small crosshatched circles (and one was an oval) to hold those areas down, yet still fit the style of the rest of the quilting. I used quite an assortment of rulers to accomplish all the designs, including some by Linda Hrcka of The Quilted Pineapple, and one by Kelly Cline Quilting.

There were a couple of basket blocks that left some bare areas towards the bottom, so I quilted “ghost leaves” to look like a continuation of the appliqué to fill in those areas.

We chose Poly Deluxe batting for this quilt. It’s the thickest loft poly by Quilter’s Dream, and it was a dream to quilt on. I will definitely use it again. It gave this quilt a lot of weight, but it worked out so well.

Here are the details . . .
