Panel Challenge Update #1

Posted on March 24, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Challenges

I finally got moving on my Panel Challenge quilt! If you want in on the Panel Challenge, it’s not too late at all. You can find all the info HERE and HERE.

I came up with an idea, and it turned into a throw quilt. Then I got to thinking that was too big, and maybe I needed to come up with a different idea. Then I decided why not? It’s OK to make it throw sized, and it’ll use up more fabric from my stash, right?

Besides, I plan to donate mine to my guild’s Comfort quilt stash, and a throw quilt is a good donation size, so I’m forging ahead.

I got my panel cut up, and I’m amazed to say that all I had left over from it was these 4 little strips!

Here’s what it looked like to start with:

I’m using all the little blocks. And I pieced the little vine strip from the edges and the middle to make a sashing strip. There was just enough of it.

Then I found this cute little button print that was left over from the edge of a border print I used long ago. It matched, and it was just enough to make the outer borders, so now it’s gone from my stash. And I found a piece to use for my binding already! I’m feeling pretty smug about all that right now — hahaha!

I have some more cutting to do, and then I will begin sewing.

And did I mention that I found 4 more panels while I was cleaning?????

How are you doing with YOUR panel challenge?

I know some of you were already at the quilting stage, and lots of you have great ideas for yours. We still have over a month to get finished, but I’m sure I can drag mine out that long!

We officially have one prize sponsor for our Viewer’s Choice contest at the end!

Bernie, at Needle and Foot, is offering a $35 gift certificate to her shop, and she has some great stuff! There’s also a funny story about her shop name (that I’m sure a lot of us can relate to), so go give her a visit: Needle and Foot. I’ll announce more about the prizes and how the winners will be chosen as we near the deadline (April 30), so stay tuned for that.

I started planning my project and did some cutting a couple of days ago. It is a large floral panel and I sliced sections of it vertically. I plan to put a neutral strip between the stripes. Beyond that I still don’t have a plan. But it is sort of fun to just keep plugging along as I am sure the quilt will evolve from there. Thanks for thinking of this!

I still haven’t decided which panel I’m going to use. Since I got my long arm fixed I’ve been quilting up a storm on mostly Project Linus quilts. Nice weather pushed me outside and I got early garden in a couple of weeks ago which for this area is way too early. Ground was ready and so was I. Forecast calls for more rain so maybe my sewing motivation will come home.

I can’t wait to see yours, especially with all your amazing quilting done on it. I’ve changed my mind a bunch of times on mine, as I’m trying to use up scraps from panels that I bought in a mystery scrap bag. I think I’ve finally come up with something. I do like that we have until the end of April though, to finish it, as I’m not exactly fast on these types of things. Thanks for doing this fun challenge!

  4. I have chosen my panel and have other pieces cut to add to it. Anything else we need to do to sign up?

I have my 2 panels pieced & ready for quilting but had to take my sewing machine into shop ☹️. They said maybe 3 weeks. None of the other 2 machines i have can drop the feed dogs or have walking foot so will have to wait. Guess that means i have to piece not quilt.

  6. I have my panel cut and the piecing figured out. Now I just need to find the time to sew!

I got the panel that is an airport runway toy Matt done.. than I took out the Alice in wonderland blocks and the big crazy owl panels and they are on the design wall. I quilted some chicken panels that were done but only a top

  9. Haven’t started yet, but was thinking about it yesterday. If I’m thinking about it, this means that I must be getting ready to start 🙂

  10. Shirley Guier says:

I have mine designed and fabric bought. That is quite an accomplishment for me right now.

  11. Barb Roberts says:

I’m proud to say I’ve chosen a panel, that’s as far as I’ve gotten. We’ll see.

  12. Pam Desilets says:

I have mine ready for quilting. Planning on doing that this weekend. I hope this panel challenge goes on for awhile. I too found more panels! Happy sewing

  13. Wendy says:

Well, I finally found my panel (woohoo!) and I apparently added borders way back when (woohoo!) but it’s very narrow and long (boohoo!) – wide enough that it can’t be a table runner, but not wide enough for a lap. Hmm. Not sure I have any fabric that will match, but that will be the next step. I like what you are doing with yours – and it’s all from your stash (woohoo!)!

  14. Sharon Gratz says:

I’m still planning on using the panel but have a few things on my List of Shame (UFOs) I want to do before starting it.

  15. Darlene Y says:

I haven’t made final decision on panel. I was trying to locate one I thought I had but it is not in the panel box! Your fabric selections look nice w/ panel it will make a real nice quilt.

  16. Kathy Parks says:

I’ve got the top pieced and not to be quilted.

  17. Elaine says:

I dug out the panel I wanted to use. The trimming is done and first border on. Still working on a design for the last border. Getting there slowly.

  18. I kept hearing about the panel challenge and I am finally jumping on board!! Got my panel picked, now to get cracking this week:)

  19. Mine is ready to make/see binding and label. YAY!
