Before I offer up this next challenge, I encourage you to go back to our last organizing challenge post and read the comments. There are so many good suggestions on thread storage AND other organizing tidbits you can pick up. I’m happy that you all seem so excited about this!
I only got to spend about 30 minutes working on my mess of embroidery floss. I did get several more skeins wound onto bobbins. I can tell I need to purchase more bobbins, so I’ll have that on my next shopping list. After getting it all wound, the next step will be to make it fit into the cartons. I’ll have some readjusting to do so that they can all stay in numerical order and be easy to find.
One reason I’ve been wanting to get my embroidery floss organized is because I’ve been itching to start a new project. You know, because I don’t already have enough projects in the works! Teehee! But my favorite quilt shop, Sew Sweet Quilt Shop in Brunswick, Missouri, recently expanded their shop, and the new addition is chock full of the most delicious cross stitch supplies and projects and ideas. On my very first visit to see the new addition, I bought this:

On my next trip, I bought this:

They’re both simple because they use limited colors of floss and basic stitches, and that’s the sort of project I’m into as far as counted cross stitch goes. And now that Halloween is upon us, I’m just beginning the Halloween one. And because Christmas is drawing nigh, I’ve decided to also start the Christmas tree one (I’m using red floss instead of the green shown). I don’t see a problem with having them both going at once, do you? It’ll probably be the 2027 holidays before I get them both finished, anyway!
So I’ll keep chipping away at getting my floss organized, but meanwhile, it’s already time for another challenge. What will it be?
Is there something in your sewing room that needs doing, but you’ve been ignoring it, but it’s been eating at you that it needs doing, but you just can’t get yourself to do it?
Mine was my ironing board cover. I bought new canvas to recover it a loooong time ago, and the current cover had gotten disgustingly gross. It was scorched to a nice dark brown, and had a hole in it, and the cushy was all gone from it. I always marvel at how an ironing surface can get so nasty!
My problem was that I have not been able to run the staple gun for over a year, and was reluctant to ask for help to get it done. So I finally tested my elbow to see if I could do it. I successfully removed the old nasty cover, but upon first attempt to put in a new staple, I failed miserably. I simply don’t have the strength to do it yet. So . . .
I asked My Cowboy for help, and he graciously came up to the studio and helped me replace the cover. I’m so happy with it. It feels so wonderful, like it’s made a difference in the entire room! And I’m scared to get it dirty again. Pay no nevermind to the high piles on my cutting table!

So even tho I already have this task finished, I’m challenging you to pick something you’ve been putting off. Just do it, and it will make such a wonderful difference!
Side note: I got my canvas from the clearance room at Sew Sweet Quilt Shop. It’s a print from an old line called “Lucy’s Crab Shack”, and I love the bicycles! At the same time, I bought a couple other pieces of canvas in anticipation of future ironing board cover changes, so I’m all set for a few years of new ironing board covers, provided I can remember where I put the other pieces of canvas when the time rolls around to change it again!
Nice job! Love your new ironing board cover. I have that yet to do – our old pine kitchen table has been nabbed by me for that very same purpose!
Am finally in the sewing room and filling up shelves – everything is mixed up, but I’m getting there. It’ll be rearranging the fabric next, then sorting out the scraps and I’m good to go! Although I might be sewing before I do scraps – or using the scraps as I go – I’m a tad excited!
Love your new ironing board cover. I iron freezer paper to mine especially when I’m starching fabrics, and that helps keep the grossness to a minimum.
The new canvas is so cute! My ironing board also needs a new cover but it’s not bugging me enough yet to change it out. The thing I’ve been procrastinating on?! Putting together the Patriotic quilt top for a friend… it’s going to be King size. I’m just glad she’s in Tokyo and won’t be back until next summer!!
I got my threads organized! Sorted my scraps- but still need to trim them then put away. Been busy getting Halloween mini quilts done. Still need to quilt 6 tops but maybe next month.
That’s an easy one to identify and a RPIA to actually do!! Clear off the card table in the middle of the room with fabric that needs to be folded and put on shelves and the table folded and put in the closet. UGH. Maybe today???
Glad you got your ironing board recovered, it looks fresh and pretty!
My procrastination project will be to make some design boards. I purchased the foam core ages ago and I’m tried of moving it around to get it out of the way. Time to just do it!
Quick suggestion on where to store your canvas for the future that might work. If it can be folded flat to fit under the board, you could either place it there or staple it to the underside until you need it. But if you are like me, you will still have to search for it when you need it knowing you put it somewhere you wouldn’t forget.
I think I need to start an new journal that is titled, “100 Days Toward Overcoming Procrasticatination”… Day one, for yesterday would read: Spent the day at a Halloween Hook-In working on a wool applique sheep quilt that all the background squares and many of the wool bodies, heads and legs had been cut in preparation for sewing. It was fun picking out threads from my stash used to blanket stitch around the pieces and then actually start the stitching sitting with rug hookers, who were making such beautiful projects. Signing on for this event motivated me to continue this project that I have been procrastinating on for way more than a year…
