October 350 Blocks Report

Posted on October 31, 2022 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Happy Halloween! Halloween marks the end of my two favorite months of the year, and also means that we’ll be turning the furnace on soon. I always try and wait as long as possible to do that, and the forecast looks pretty good for the next couple of weeks, so I hope we can leave it off for awhile longer. I’m enjoying the lower utility bills for now!

I did a lot more sewing this month than I thought I would, and it was all due to the fact that I got asked to do some quiltmaking for a Quilt Market booth, and I said “Sure, I can make five quilts in 20 days — no hill for a stepper!”

I knew it would be a challenge, but I figured it might be just what I needed to bring my mojo back full bore, and it did, so that’s a good thing. It was just the boost I needed. Also, since it was “secret sewing”, I didn’t take a single picture, but I’ll give you links to the patterns I used.

Chickens by Cluck Cluck Sew
Planted by Cluck Cluck Sew
Picnic by Cluck Cluck Sew
Spring Fling by Lella Boutique
(the 5th quilt was a logo banner for the booth, so no pattern)

Picnic is my new favorite fat quarter pattern, so I see more of this quilt in my future. Planted is also a great fat quarter quilt, so it might be as well.

Because of all that, I ended up with 206 blocks this month! But no real finishes of my own just yet. I sure hope to get a few real finishes before the end of the year.

But anyway, how did YOU do in October?

I have the Project page updated as of last night, so it’s time to report in with your October totals.

Our new blockmaking goal for November is another 30 blocks. Only two months left in this year already! Wow!

The prize winner for September is Paula Mu., who is up to 1017 blocks so far.

Do you have all your holiday sewing done? Or are you just beginning? Now that the weather is turning, I have picked up my knitting again, but I hope it doesn’t interfere too much with my quilting — I still want to accomplish a lot of things before 2023 is upon us for real. How about you?

No blocks but the binding of the quilt that was my first block counting session with you in 2020 is almost done! I ended up with more blocks spare so cushions will be added!
Then I can start counting blocks all over again!

  5. KT says:

Wow–good for you! 206 is impressive! And I was happy with the 44 blocks I finished this month!

I made 155 blocks in October for a YTD total of 1960. Now I need to get busy quilting some of the small quilts and get backings put together for sending the larger ones to my long-armer. Congrats, Shelly, on getting SO much done this month.

  7. Christi Bentley says:

104 for me this month. A day of sewing at Scrap Attack and a 2 day guild retreat helped with my total.

  8. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Not too good for me – 1 witch applique mini quilt, 3 skinny applique mini quilts, 1 small improv jack o’lantern block, 21 string blocks, and working on half-square triangles but no blocks yet! Finished 6 small mini quilts so felt good.

  9. Debra Freese says:

Only 5 blocks for me in October.
However I did quilt a couple of Linus quilts and a grandmother’s flower garden lap quilt. Did a bit of cross stitch and sewed up a couple of dinosaur toys for grandkids.

  13. Diana S. says:

Between canning and making dog scarves I managed 35 blocks for Picture Frame pattern by Cozy Quilts. Had hoped to have the top together too but no luck!

  14. Marsha Parkhill says:

54 blocks this month which means I’ve reached over 350 for the year. I’ve participated for a few years and never got up to 350.

  15. Only a panel quilt made, so one block? LOL

  16. Fran says:

For October, I made only 86 blocks, but I sewed on lots of bindings and got 5 quilts ready for the long arm quilter.

  17. Danice says:

1,017 blocks, wow! I did complete 24 blocks for October.

  18. Phillis Harding says:

665 blocks this month. 4 quilts are Christmas gifts and 3 are quilts of valor. All are quilted and binding attached.

  19. Peggy says:

9 blocks for me as I joined the All People Quilt Christmas Sampler QAL. Have been working on the custom quilt for a friend as well as a crossstitch Christmas ornament.

  20. Tanya says:

Happy to hear that your mojo is back! I am happy to report that I had time to sew this month. Working on a fall quilt for our new bed. Got the front side done now I am making a pladdish back using Halloween fabrics so it will be a reversible quilt. I made 231 blocks this month. 🎃

  21. Ginny says:

Not much sewing this month. 12 blocks. Sewing room is totally useable now but still some rearranging in the near future to make access better. Been making baby sweaters as expecting a great grandson in March & Christmas presents (socks) on my needles.

  22. My block total for October came to 109, more than half of them in the last 10 days of the month. I also put together four quilt tops, plus finished a couple of potholders and a tablerunner.

  23. Joan says:

41 blocks, but even better 2 quilts done and put into a local library children’s storybook quilt exhibit along with several others made by quilters in a stitching group I attend occasionally.

  24. Shirley Guier says:

I had 64 blocks. The quilt I’m working on is done in sections within sections. There aren’t any real blocks. There are 13 big sections but since it can take a day to make a large section, I counted all the small sections. 8 just need a border for this one now.

  25. Marlene Clausen says:

Zero blocs for October. Had a bunch of finishes, just nothing new. Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for moving in and the end of December has become a reasonable goal. Whew! I miss my organized, dedicated sewing spaces. Those Cluck Cluck Sew Chickens have been at the top of my “want to make” list for far too long!

  26. Carissa M says:

Wow, that’s some impressive sewing to get 5 quilts done that quickly! I did some block sewing earlier in the month and made 45 blocks. But I did a lot of prep work for a quilt retreat in November, so I hope to see some bigger numbers next month.

  27. Rose Marie Smith says:

Made 79 blocks this month. Some of them were for a quilt for a new great grandbaby who is on her way here in November. Lots of them were for Christmas gifts that are now done. And 16 of them were to use up the leftovers from the gifts. I also counted one finished leftover project as 1 block. That old unfinished leftover will now be turned into a Linus quilt, I think. Trying to get the stash reduced. Good luck……..

  28. Linda Knight says:

I managed 30 blocks and 3 small quilts quilted and bound. My husband suffered a compression fracture of his lower spine on our way to Arizona last month to see the newest great grandson so our visit was short and he is still awaiting a referral to a spine specialist. Most of my time is now taking care of him.

  29. Hi Shelly!
Nice you’re getting so much done, plus a very impressive block total! I made 14 blocks in October. Not much but better than none 🙂

  30. Judy Sovereign says:

got busy and quilted 3 and made 78 blocks..

  31. Barb Roberts says:

    Hi Shelly,
I have a grand total of 35 for this month. I pieced three Linus quilts, counting that as three blocks since it’s an easy peasy pattern. Five blocks for a Rocky Road to Kansas remake of vintage blocks, nine for a short and sweet mini quilt along and 18 for a start on a Veteran’s quilt for a friend.

  32. Becky Cogan says:

Glad your Mojo is back. I made 64 blocks for October. Getting ready for a retreat at Sew Sweet later this week. Thanks for keeping us going.

  37. Amanda M. says:

I think I created 23 blocks in October. My paper isn’t in front of me. I spent most of my sewing time putting blocks into tops. I’m hoping to get more sewing time in November.

  38. Candice says:

Oh No!!! I’ve fallen in love with a couple of patterns you gave the link to and now I’ve got at least one more project on my “ to do” list. And just when I thought the end might be in sight!🤣🤣🤣

  39. Late for September – 12 blocks
    October – 23 blocks
Must be doing a lot of quilting and moving blocks into tops!

  40. Debbi says:

I have 62 blocks for October. Mostly keeping up with my BOM’s. I did get 4 quilts on the longarm, 2 of them got bound. It is now definitely the quilting (rainy) season here. I have lots I hope to finish before the end of the year. Next week off to retreat so hopefully will get lots of blocks made.

Glad your mojo is back! I sure like the quilt patterns you shared.

  41. Dianne D says:

41 blocks for October for me. Way behind lots of folks, but I’m happy! Thanks again Shelley for keeping up with all this!

  43. Judy Smith says:

My numbers looked a little better this month, I had 60 blocks. Maybe that will make up for some of those slow months.

  44. Paula Mu says:

Hi Shelly, October has been a crazy month for me, so not a lot of sewing done. I had a total of 78 blocks: 61 in the Letters to Santa quilt, 9 for Secret Life of Color, 2 Spicy, 1 block of the month with Sherry McConnell, and 5 total for a table runner and 2 placemats. Hopefully, November will be better for block sewing.

You had a terrific month! Glad you found your mojo again! I had 108 blocks this month.

  46. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for October: 37. A little better but still behind on projects; maybe the list is too long.
Glad you are feeling good and sewing.
We turned heat on a few weeks ago when it got down to 58 in the house. Turned warmer, so no heat now. We wait as long as we can to save on bill.

  47. Shirley B. says:

I made a total of 27 blocks for October. Glad your mojo is back!

  48. I had a good month in October with a total of 61 blocks.

  49. Ceil Podzimek says:

I made 37 blocks for October. 9 were for a monogram challenge at my guild and the other 28 were all for that slow moving flower pop quilt I’m making for my sister Rose. One of these days I’ll have that quilt top done!

  50. Barbara B says:

    108 blocks for October

  51. Marsha Y. says:

I made 82 blocks this month. However, after the 15th of the month, I got little done on sewing. Have a quilt that I need to design and finish by end of month. If you can do 5 in 20 days, I hope I can do one in 24 days!! You are remarkable!!!

  52. Beverly Hovis says:

Only 3 but all were 13+ inch appliqué or embroidery.

  53. I misadded last month. My total was 20, don’t ask how I could mis-add such a small number of blocks. LOL This month, it’s 14 more, so a total of 34 for total.

    October post (Nov. 5)

  54. Deanna says:

October was more a month of assembly and finishing than block making, but I did manage 28 blocks. Nearly to 700 for the year. Still trucking along with a few more goals to reach before 2023

  55. Barb Magruder says:

I squeaked out 81 blocks in October.

  56. Wendy Tuma says:

I’m late with my reply! Only 34 for October.

  57. cathy k says:

I made 71 blocks in October and finished 2 quilts.

  58. Christine T says:

Another zero for me. Still in house-move limbo, sigh. Good to hear what you’ve been achieving though!

  59. Bev C. says:

Finally get a chance to post. So happy you got your mojo back. I finished 2 quilts, quilted and bound, and I have 3 more quilt tops done. Put those 3 with my others and I have 5 tops to sandwich and quilt. Thought I was out of that hole. lol. I also did 220 blocks in October. Will slow down a lot in Nov. as my QAL are almost done. Maybe get some quilted? Have a lovely Thanksgiving!
