October 350 Blocks Report

Posted on October 31, 2019 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Oh, my gosh! What a whirlwind month of quilting! I had so little on my plate for the trade show (Quilt Market) this fall, I was resting on my laurels and feeling quite smug about it, and then all of a sudden — BAM! — along with quilting three quilts that had to be done, I got asked to make NINE quilts, start to finish.

Then I got sick and could barely get out of bed for 2 weeks! So even tho I had chipped away at them for a little bit, it got down to crunch time, and I was not near done enough. So . . .

I worked 20- and 22-hour days for a week to get it all done, and still, if not for my sister doing all the bindings and sleeves, I’d have never made the deadline — whew! When it was all over, I slept for 11 hours straight, then woke up and started cleaning house! Thank goodness My Cowboy knows how to take care of himself AND me at the same time, and that he did most of the farm chores during this time. But wow! — when you let your house go for that long, it gets messy in a hurry!

But out of all that flurry, came a total of 105 quilt blocks made this month!

Here are some of the quilts I made . . .

This one is called Simplify, and it’s a pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew. I made it using Stitch & Sparkle‘s line of fabric called Tone and Tone. Any quilt you use this fabric in simply glows. They’re amazing pieces. (I made this quilt for them last year with this line, and I’m still in love with it!)

Stitch & Sparkle has a new line out called Impressionism Moment. There are seven colors in the line, and they wanted all of them used in this Vintage Daisies quilt. This is a pattern by The Red Boot Quilt Company. Even using the black and brown prints from the line, I like how this one turned out. I added in some of their solids to make it a bit easier to spread the colors around and for some added interest.

And finally, this quilt . . . I LOVE this quilt! It’s a Lori Holt pattern called Sew by Row. But let me state for the record that this is a LOT of sewing to have to cram into a short time. I would have loved making it a lot more, if I hadn’t had to be in such a hurry. I may try it again when I can take my time — or not! But still, it turned out so adorable, using their Impressionism Moment line along with more of their solids.

The other six quilts I made for them were banners for their booth at the show. I made 6 quilted banners, and if you’re on FaceBook, you can see some of the banners in their booth video from the trade show HERE.

Other than that . . . and yes, I did do some other sewing besides that this month! . . . I finished up a scrappy quilt for our monthly guild challenge, and have already donated it. I did a quick photo shoot in the driveway before leaving for the meeting, and Sissy and Sassy thought they needed to supervise! This quilt was made from a Kaffe Fassett pattern called Autumn Daze (I think — it’s an old old UFO, so my memory may not be serving me properly.)

I had a goal this year of donating at least 10 quilts to my guild’s charity projects, and this makes #9. I also had a goal of completing 25 scrap quilts, and this makes #10. I need to get steppin’ to get those other 15 done yet this year, but I have several others really close, so I might make it — time will tell. (You can see my original list of projects for this year HERE.)

So there you have it! My October in a nutshell. Oh, and did I mention that we have snow on the ground today? Happy Halloween!! I’m so not ready for snow just yet. Or cold, for that matter, but we’ve had the furnace on for a week now.

So now it’s your turn . . . How did you do making blocks this month?

It’s time to report in with your totals. I have the Project Page updated (I think). Leave a comment or contact me to get me updated, and to let us all know how you did!

For November, our goal is 35 blocks for a year-to-date total of 324. So close! Not much time left in 2019.

The prize winner for September is Cynthia. She’s made 435 blocks this year so far! Yay!

I think November might turn out to be a good month for staying in and quilting, so I hope we all have good numbers to report next time. We only have two more months to make blocks for this year — Happy Stitching!

I made 62 blocks this month. About 1/2 of those were the final log cabin blocks so that quilt top is finally put together!!! 😄👍

  2. Shasta says:

Wow you certainly have been busy making so many quilts in such a short amount of time. I tend to chug along at a snail’s pace. I really like your UFO quilt – I have lots of scraps it would be good for. I am glad you are feeling better. Please take care of yourself.

  3. Marcia in TX says:

None this month. Only quilting flimsies. You sure have been busy. Be sure to take care of yourself.

  4. Betty Keene says:

I didn’t make the goal this month. I made 21 blocks. I guess it could have been worse.

  5. Wendy says:

So many pretty quilts, Shelly! I have 53 blocks for this month.

  6. denniele says:

Good heavens you were busy at the end!!! Isn’t this snow too early? My block total is 173…and only because some things finally saw the light of day!!

  7. Aileen Kline says:

Hi Ladies. Only made 40 this month.
I am teaching my daughter to quilt! Wish me luck. She is very OCD. One thread off and she gets upset. Did I say she is 36! LOL

  8. Debbi says:

One large appliqué block for a baby quilt and 19 big blocks for a spaceship quilt for me. Just 20 blocks but seems like a fair amount of sewing, at least for me, nothing like your whirlwind! I can’t even imagine it.

  9. Ranch Wife says:

As soon as I read that you were putting in 20-22 hours a day, my eyes crossed. How on earth?! Good gravy! I don’t think my auto-pilot even works under those conditions. I have to say that you knocked out beautiful quilts though! It’s a wonder you didn’t end up back on bed rest – be well this winter!

  10. Christi Bentley says:

Wow! That’s a lot of quilts start to finish! I have 28 blocks this month. Some required a lot of piecing so took longer. I also did some bindings on some projects and made some napkins to go with some placemats for Christmas presents, so the 28 isn’t too bad.

  11. Louise says:

I have 102 blocks this month. There have been a lot of sleepless nights, so I have just been getting up and seeing.

  12. Karen E. says:

I made 122 blocks in October, for a YTD total of 1605. I’ll spend the rest of this afternoon packing for a Fri-Sat-Sun quilt retreat. I should be kicking off November with a lot of blocks sewn!

    Happy Halloween to everyone!

    Karen E.

  13. Angela says:

Wow, you have been very busy!
I only finished 24 blocks in October.
I’ve been busy working on a guild charity project; I made 21 wheelchair bags and 8 walker bags for the local nursing home. The rest of the time I’ve been hand quilting a vintage applique quilt (from a kit) that I purchased on eBay. I love handwork during this time of the year. 😊

  14. Ginny says:

You would have seen me under I don’t even know what if I worked any 22 hour days. Glad you were able to get done what you needed to have done.
My month was way short, 10 blocks in all. I might make the year goal but only time will tell.

  15. Linda Knight says:

I made 0 blocks this month. The little time I had in the quilt room was making a backing and trying to get the antique star basted down enough so that I can quilt it. I also went shopping for more fabric!!!! Yes, I know I swore off but it just didn’t work.

  16. Rose Marie Smith says:

I did 71 blocks this month as best as I can figure without keeping really good count. 4 of those were Daredevil blocks and they are really, really hard. And besides the 71 blocks I have made 4 pillowcases for foster children Christmas gifts. Not nearly as hard as your month but still a big challenge.

  17. JanetD says:

All things considered I think you deserve some sort of medal for what you got accomplished. I can count 15 for October.

  18. Sharon Gratz says:

Good grief, girl! Was 11 hours long enough to catch up on your sleep? Your Cowboy must have felt like he was in a whirlwind during those days of sewing.
Love the Stitch and Sparkle tone and tone fabric. I only did 22 blocks this month but, I got all my Christmas gifts made for my up north family for DD to take back with her when she was here and have a completed flimsy.

  19. Diana S says:

Shelly isn’t amazing how much we can get done-crunch time! I hope you can relax a little now. Loving your quilt pictures. That scrap quilt would be fun to make and I have the scraps for it! I have that Cluck Cluck Sew pattern out in the stack of what should I make next!

I managed 66 blocks for October. 30 for the Quilting with Love groups challenge and 36 blocks from a Moda to Go Tin (Jelly Roll and pattern in a cute tin) Yes it’s old! I did manage to get 5 quilts bound. 3 are in the to be donated box and the other 2 were hugs quilts that have been given and received by friends. So it was a productive month. I think I may do a 2020 list-might help to keep me on track but I doubt it.

  20. What a nice surprise being September’s winner. Thank you. I have 25 blocks for October.
Snow on the ground for you guys already and we have had extreme heat here in South Australia. An early start .

  21. Laura says:

Hi Shelly, I got 5 blocks made for October.

  22. Crystal F says:

75 blocks for me….I have lots of Quilts of Valor quilts to get ready for Veterans Day.

  23. Mary D. says:

You amaze me with what you accomplish!
October went by in kind of a blur for me. I was gone on a wonderful trip for 10 days, made three Halloween costumes, babysat little boys 5 days and nights, and quilted a few quilts for others. But I did manage to get 28 blocks done, mostly because we had a guild retreat last weekend.

  24. KT says:

I’m so impressed with how much you got done! Hope you’ve recovered–I’m surprised you only slept for 11 hours after all that! I made 25 blocks in October.

  25. Amanda M. says:

Mother Nature left 3 inches of snow at my place last night and my sewing motivation showed up as well! According to my notes I made 41 blocks this month [10 just this evening while listening to the Halloween show on the radio, love the old spooky songs] for 8 different projects. I need to concentrate on finishing more things but starting new projects are so much fun!

  26. Maxine says:

I made 23 blocks this month. It felt really good to get back behind the sewing machine! I forgot that I had promised a quilt to make for a Christmas gift. So now I I feel like I have a purpose to get it done. Small steps! It’s only a throw sized quilt so it is not overwhelming. Keep your fingers crossed that I seem to have turned the corner and hopefully stay on course! Oh and thank you for the ranch update. I love reading about the animals.

  27. Peggy Long says:

I managed 20 blocks for October. Trying to get weeds and volunteer trees cut out of places they shouldn’t be. Managed to get young trees fenced against buck rut. Keeping my fingers crossed. Anyone needing downed trees for firewood is welcome free of charge. Not ready for snow…too much to do!

  28. Joan says:

Forty-two blocks completed–the last on a Halloween Quilt that has been in progress for too long… Wonderful quilting on your Simplify Quilt–love that modern look.

  29. Stephanie says:

Wow that sure was a lot of work. Well done you!
I made just 48 blocks in October, a set of Heartstrings blocks for a teen boy quilt.

  30. Sherry says:

38 October blocks. Starting to put my leader-ender project into blocks.

  31. Beverly Vendt says:

Glad you are better. After being gone for two months, October was a busy month including family reunion making apple butter over the open fire. However I was asked if I could make a quilt for charity, so decided to do a throw scrappy quilt and made 115 blocks this month.

  32. Marlene Clausen says:

    35 blocks
that does NOT include a pile of AG doll clothes, several bags & pouches, iPad sleeves, Sock Monkey named Eddie, a fauxfur pillow, and even a child-sized mummy that can sit on a chair, cross its legs and hold a sign!!
I have to finish one bag and four little pouches, about 2 days, and I NEED to QUILT something . . . ANYTHING!! Thread arriving via FedEx today. Will give myself one week to have fun quilting and then tackle the Elizabeth Harman gnome pattern, turning it into a Detroit Lions fan wall hanging w/six all-stars and three cheerleaders. Wish me luck. I so LOVE her patterns. Literally, jigsaw puzzles for quilters.

  33. Clara Chandler says:

You sewed a marathon!! Lovely quilts were a result of all your effort.
8 blocks to finish the #100Days#100Blocks project {truly a scrappy quilt}, 66 HSTs for a brother’s gift, 8 blocks for sew along and 5 blocks as samples for a class I’m teaching at my LQS = 87 for the month. Thanks for the motivation that I get from reading your blog, Shelly.

  34. sharonG says:

I only made about 24 blocks this month. I had a vacation so, no regrets. as for cleaning my house– I hate that and once a month is pretty good for me (yes it is a big job but, only once a month)

  35. I have 27 for this month, fell short of the 30 block goal. But I did quilt 3 quilts and got them off my UFO list.

  36. Julie M. says:

I managed to get 32 blocks this month. Hoping to get lots done in November now that the colder weather has arrived and Christmas is quickly approaching.J

  37. Deanna says:

In all the years I have participated in tracking blocks I have never had so few: 3. But, I did finish two quilts and have two more in the binding phase. Not a complete wash.

  38. Love all your quilts! So pretty! I am amazed at all the blocks you guys are getting done! I think I need to join in next year 🙂 xx

  39. So many beautiful quilts! I logged 26 blocks for October, which brings me past my goal, with a total of 354 to date. This is great because sometimes I don’t have time to make any blocks in Nov/Dec ….too busy working on Christmas gifts.

  40. katie z. says:

196 new blocks for a total of 1693.

    https://zanasninis.blogspot.com/2019/10/october-block-count.html

I’m still waiting to get well, but sewing takes less energy than other things, so at least I can do that!

  41. Joy Dabney says:

Made 8 blocks for September. I was out of town a lot finishing Fall baseball with my Grandson. I will try to do more in October

  42. Randy Menninghaus says:

    53!!!!

  43. Paula Mu says:

Sorry for the late reply. I too caught an awful virus that resulted in spending a week flat on my back. I had 25 blocks in October.

  44. Danice says:

17 blocks for me in October. Sorry I am late reporting. All beautiful quilts you have made.

  45. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for October is 124 blocks. Scrappy quilt with lots of bright colors for baby due December 31. Do not know how you get so much done; it seems you have much more to do than I; guess you manage time better or maybe getting older makes me slow down more. This gives me the push to keep going!

  46. Judy Smith says:

I have only made 4 blocks this month. I think I will fall short for the year, but can claim 10 UFOs completed so I’m happy.

  47. I saw the banners and quilts in person. They’re fabulous. That’s why I only got 25 done this month. Hoping to do better this month.

  48. Karen says:

I don’t have any blocks to report this month, as other things are taking priority, but I just had to congratulate you on all your finishes! Wow! You sure were busy! Love them all! Please take care of yourself though.

  49. Pamela Martin says:

20 blocks – only because I was at a retreat.

  50. Marsha Y. says:

Wow, it is amazing what you get done each month, Shelly!!! I can only try to get a small portion of that done each month. However, I did manage to get 29 blocks done this month along with finishing a couple of quilts. Hopefully November will be better as I have two quilts to make for a friend. Thanks for the inspiration!

  51. Cheryl says:

I did 14 for October, you did great!!!

  52. Wendy O says:

I’ve not posted a couple of months! And STILL! My blocks come nowhere Near your count! Hope you get more extra sleep.

My goal is to FINISH some UFOs that have been hanging around a few years! Had to make 7 blocks to finish first UFO, been around since 2006. Then, another quilt that has been hanging around for not nearly so long, only since 2015. 4 blocks and it is almost done, just borders to go. THEN I had to quickly get 20 blocks done for a local block swap!

HEY! I did get some stuff done these past couple of months! 31 more blocks!

  53. Carolyn Schomaker says:

I only completed ten blocks for Oct. started a couple other projects and then my husband caught virus on top of his COPD and died unexpectedly. May take me awhile to get back in quilting mode.

  54. Barbara B says:

    I completed 254 blocks
