October 350 Blocks Report

Posted on October 31, 2023 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Happy Halloween! It’s our coldest day yet; just in time, as always — and windy, to boot. I’m happy to stay inside and quilt. We don’t get trick-or-treaters here. The first year we were here for Halloween, I asked My Cowboy: “Do you think we’ll get any trick-or-treaters, or will they think this house is haunted and be too scared to stop by?” His reply: “Well, that, or they’ve seen you out in the yard!” Joker!

For the first time in many, many years, I took the entire month to sew for myself. I quilted a few of my own quilts, and sewed like the wind to catch up on lots of projects that are so close to finished. So I ended up with a big pile of quilts that need binding, and 201 blocks!

Of that 201 blocks, 140 of them were for various mystery quilts, two of which I will get to show you later this week. So stay tuned for that.

Six of them were to finish up this Made in USA quilt that I donated to my guild for their Veteran’s Day presentation. It will be presented to a veteran in our area to recognize him for his service.

I made another Pineapple block, another Improv Herringbone block, and 8 more snowball blocks. Here are four of them. I think this might turn out to be an ugly quilt, so I’m gonna make it picnic size so we can drag it around, and I won’t feel guilty for using it up and wearing it out!

I also drug out another old UFO and regrouped on it and started working on it again. I got this pattern from my friend, Cindy, at Live a Colorful Life. It’s called Jammin’ Jelly. I started it because of a guild challenge years ago, so I’ll tell you all about that when I get it finished, which should be real soon because it’s a super quick sew, and I’m making it for a gift that I’ll be giving soon.

And I made another Patchwork City block. If I keep doing one block a month, it’ll only take me another 7 years to finish them all!

The rest of my blocks were for mystery quilts and various projects I’ll show you later. For now, it’s YOUR turn! What did you get done in October?

I have the Project page updated with our totals from last month as I know them. Our block goal for November is 34 blocks, for a year-to-date total of 318. Only two months left! I can hardly believe that.

The prize winner for September is Linda K. She’s up to 531 blocks so far this year!

I hope you get plenty of sewing time in as we head into the holiday season. There’s that feeling in the air!

  2. Ioleen says:

I managed to sew 3 blocks this month. Physio is helping the arm heal but it’s still sore so I’m not going to push it. I’m happy I got to sew a little in October 😊

  3. ChrisG says:

  6. Susan Siemens says:

you have been busy! I made 3 disappearing 9 patch blocks, 4 log cabin blocks and 48 blocks for a quilt, 47 of which are the same and 1 was cut wrong and I didnt have any fabric left so I made one more from scraps that kind of work. so in all this month, I made 55 blocks.

  7. KT says:

Well that made short work of a rather long post! Mutter, mutter…

Short answer: I managed 48 blocks this month.

  11. Fran says:

I have moved in with my daughter. No sewing machine so I work on appliqué. A granddaughter is living in my house and occasionally I get to go home and sew for an hour or two. Made only 6 blocks. Hopefully, I can eventually move one of my sewing machines here so that I can make more blocks.

  12. Love the flag!
198 blocks for me. (And somehow I’m not happy with even that! LOL. Where did the time go?)

  13. Kerry says:

Naughty cowboy – but I did laugh. Mine reckons I’m a scarecrow. No trick or treaters here – not sure if any are out down here as it is wet and wild as a storm comes through over the next couple of days – hence lots of sewing time after the animals sorted.
So far 4 great granny blocks (Susie Stuklis), and all the units done ready for your block 1. I would have started the units for block 2 but realised my seam regulator thingy had shifted and I was making the units too big. Ugh! Unpicked those needing to be redone (thankfully not all) and Molly the Featherweight is waiting for servicing (pedal issues) and now on Agent Peggy Carter, 201K Singer treadle. Getting a bit of exercise too! LOL!

  14. Wanda Marvel says:

    24 blocks

  15. Ginny says:

31 blocks for Oct. Lots of other sewing. Christmas gifts, aprons, pillow cases bind a couple quilts, zipper pouches, 8 placemats for my daughter and needle cases. Machine & I have been busy. even started a big jnitting project for me. Harold is well recoopered from his minor but needed surgery. So for a week I did all the driving & a month he isn’t to lift more than 15 pounds. One full quilt finished from beginning to end.
Hope to have a even better month this month.

  16. Debbi says:

October was a fast month for me. First weekend was quilt retreat. I got two quilts quilted for show and tell and finished the binding at retreat on both. Then I put together two other flimsys from blocks previously made.

After getting home started focusing on getting ready for my trip to Ireland. I did make a Halloween table runner that was quilt as you go and appliqué blocks.

Think I can count it as 3 blocks and that’s about what I can recall sitting in my hotel room in Ireland.

Relatively productive month even if a lot of blocks weren’t made.

  17. Raewyn says:

Good on you taking the time to sew for yourself, having some finishes, and a healthy block tally too! Sorry I haven’t reported for a while – each month I intend to but haven’t been organised enough to get to reporting. However I am all up-to-date now with my counting and recording now! I made 8 in June (I thought I had reported but can’t see that I left a comment) and I made 74 in the months July-Aug-Sept-Oct. Not bad considering we’ve been busy calving and calf rearing!

  18. Diana S says:

You had a busy month- happy for you. I was productive this month,.just not making blocks. Did work on a couple of UFOS, not finished yet but did work on them. total for the month -19 blocks. 3 tablerunners and 5 more scrappy rail fence blocks!

  19. PAULA M MO says:

I have 0 blocks for October! I did pull kits that I will never complete, mostly small Row by Row kits. Also grabbed out some material I am not going to feel guilty about parting with, about 10 yards worth. Also, downsized my color sorting. Gave my sister some of my scraps about 2 grocery bags -she does EPP and is working on a postage stamp quilt. I managed to create an empty drawer not sure how long that will last! I have fabric pulled for 2 SAL. I have no hope of keeping up! Oh, and I wrapped Christmas, only have a few gift cards / wine to pick up and I am done!

  20. Dianne D says:

Sounds like busy times for everyone these days. Lots of other projects here too, but pleased to report 42 blocks this month.

  28. Suelynn Williams says:

  29. Marlene Clausen says:

111 blocks for this month. Most of the month spent on quilting and binding and also sorting/pressing/cutting my flannel into usable/find-able! order. Had no idea how much flannel I actually have!

  37. How wonderful that you got to concentrate on your own projects in October! I ended up with blocks for the month.

  38. October has been a super busy month for lots of company and non-quilting stuff; however, though not blocks, I did make about a million half-square triangles for a jacket I’m making. (OK, I may have exaggerated that number a bit but it did ‘feel’ like that many). So, 0 actual blocks for October.

  39. Linda Knight says:

I made 8 blocks and quilted and bound 3 throw size quilts.

  40. Marsha Parkhill says:

So glad you were able to do some sewing for yourself. I am sure you were pleased to make progress on your quilts. The flag quilt is beautiful!

  42. Bev c. says:

  49. Ginabeth says:

Well it took a few days, but I finally got it totaled.

24 were from my daily embroidery panel. Most of the rest were from my procrastination quilt. (The new sew-a-long I did because I did not want to work on what I should have been doing📍).
But now I have a Christmas Quilt ready to quilt.

  50. katie z. says:

I’m so glad you took a month to sew for yourself!

We don’t get trick or treaters either. DH takes the littles into town, and I stay at home for a few quiet hours.

Missed the post and was wondering where it was. I did get a few made, but will count in November with the whole quilt. I am working on UFOs also. Hope to get more done, now that I am back home. Glad to see you are still getting a lot accomplished.

  53. Stephanie says:

October was full of yukky medical stuffs. But before those appointments started, I got 20 blocks made. Yay for 20. Any is better than none.

  54. Ceil Podzimek says:

I managed to get a total of 12 blocks for October, but they were a mix of everything – microwave bowl cozies to go to Louisiana with my sister Rose’s finished Petunia quilt, some Christmas ornaments made at a guild sew day, recovered large sofa pillows to better match my new apartment, and a pretty cover for my old stand mixer since it has to sit on my counter now.
I love your Made in USA quilt – so inspiring.
