November Studio Organizing, Task Two

Posted on November 29, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

I thought about skipping a second task for this month, but then I decided I really need it if I’m gonna finish up some stuff by the end of the year, so I can get a good start on 2022, so here we are! Besides, there will only be one December task, since we will end the year with The Final Countdown, which I’m super excited about! I hope you’ll be joining me for that.

I managed to NOT start any new quilts last time as I was playing in the scraps, but I did do a bit of processing, and I cut more pieces for some scrap quilts I have in progress. It only makes me realize that I still have a loooooong way to go, and I wanted to have it all organized by the end of the year — it’s not looking likely.

Since I’ve been trying to whittle down the number of projects on my cutting table and get it cleared off better, this time I’m going with this task:

Clear off your main work surface

I had a bit of a craftermath to clear up since finishing a couple things, and I’m scrambling to finish a few more so that I can have fewer projects laid out and keep the table more clear.

Here’s what it looks like this morning. Not horrendous, relatively speaking, but could be LOTS better:

I’ll show you an after picture when our December task gets posted. Wish me luck!

How’s your main work surface?

Are you scrambling to finish some things for the holidays? Things you want to have finished before the new year starts?

You know, it’s easier to work when you don’t leave yourself just a 2-foot space to work in on the entire large table. It’s also easier to find things you’re looking for that you need for those projects. I am definitely speaking from experience here! Or am I the only one who lets it get this bad? I don’t think I’m alone, judging from what some of you have told me in the past.

I’m planning to relocate projects I have no intention of working on in the immediate future, so that I can more comfortably work on the ones I DO want to get done and off the table.

And . . . how do little random things creep onto the table over the course of a month? I “clean” my main table at the end of every month anyway, but there are still random small things I never manage to deal with, so this time, I’m putting forth a more serious effort — we’ll see what happens.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and are heading into a lovely December holiday season. We’ve had the most wonderful weather, and I hope that holds for awhile. If you’re making things for the holidays, I wish you speedy and nimble fingers as you finish them up. I’m taking it a bit slower this year, and really enjoying it.

Right at the moment my main cutting and sewing surface is covered with paraphernalia for mailing Christmas cards. I didn’t realize how scattered everything has become until my boyfriend came by; I think he’s wondering if I’m a border line hoarder or just very unorganized. I have a couple of quilts to finish for Christmas and then my bestie is grandma-ing again around the end of the year so need to get baby’s quilt done also. With the weather being so nice it’s hard to stay inside and quilt.

  2. I managed to clear my sewing table and then promptly refilled it with the projects that need to be squared up so I can finish them or get the binding put on!

My cutting table stays clean. It is my one “forbidden surface”, nothing is allowed to rest on it unless I am actually cutting. A shame the same can’t be said for every other flat surface in the house – LOL! I will pick another table for this task.

I had to laugh at the 2 ft working space. I figured I was the only one who did that and I wasn’t telling. lol I started clearing off my main table last night. I decided it wasn’t necessary to have every container full of fabric that I own piled high just so I can look at them. Behind a door a lot of them went and more will be addressed in the coming days.

My space had gotten totally out of control! I spent a few hours for a couple of days and it really made a difference. I had to get it cleaned up so I could start a new project. I still have a few little things I could do but it is soooo much better.

I use half of my cutting table for cutting and last night I had cleaned a lot of it up. I finished the rest this afternoon.

My sewing room was organized, now trying to finish this up I have a terrible mess. I have two quilt to be quilted, and four pj bottoms to get done for Christmas. Then back to reorganizing my seeing room. I really hate to work in a mess room!
    Happy seeing !

My sewing space is ok. Do have 2 small projects to get done and 6 quilts in line to be quilted though only 1 is Christmas related. Will work on that one next then do the 2 projects.

I delude myself, I think I’m doing so good because I keep my cutting table and sewing areas clear, but if you look anywhere else in that room there are piles on all the shelves and even spread out on the floor. Zeesh!!!!

My work table is covered with a wedding quilt I am making for my nephew….a Tennesse Waltz. They met in Nashville, and are making their home in Nashville so I thought that would be an appropriate quilt! I want to have the top done before we go to Wisconsin for Christmas so my parents can see it–not sure if they are going to make it to the wedding because of age and orthopedic issues. I will get it to my quilter after the first of the year…so it will be done by their May 14 wedding date. So, I am hoping to have my table cleaned off before our Wisconsin trip…so I can dive into the next quilt!

Cutting table is actually in pretty good shape! That is because it all moved to my sewing room table and floor. December is my month to only quilt all the quilts finished for years and hidden in a tote (but not in my mind, just not on my agenda!). If I can long arm at least two a day of the smaller projects and one a day of the bed size, I can do it. There are three thread paintings in that tote that will be my true challenge timewise and are on the bottom of list of what days I’m working on which items. Wish me luck! And if you believe in miracles, use your thoughts to have my LA computer decide to work to help me out!

  13. My main space was uncluttered as I finished a WIP that I now need to sandwich and quilt. That’s my one goal for the last month of the year. Is it still clear – no! Started another color block quilt for my group at church.

  14. My main work surface was piled high with all the stuff off the floor. Stuff is off the work surfaces and I’m doing better.
If I could find a box to package gifts in, I would be able to have a clean floor too.
I’m going to focus on the desk. The never-ending messy desk.
