I completely forgot about posting a second organizing challenge in October!
That figures, since I’m usually having trouble even figuring out what day it is. So we’ll just carry on like it’s all OK, because it really is!
Our last challenge was to deal with an old UFO. I dug out my Wild 9-Patch quilt, and made 13 more blocks for it. I also have about 40 more blocks ready to leader/ender as I’m working on other stuff, so hopefully, it’ll get done sometime soon. I’m not in a huge rush, since I don’t have time to quilt it for awhile, anyway, so I’ll just enjoy the process. Did you find an old UFO to deal with? How did you do on it?
And now it’s time for another challenge, so what are we doing this time?
Well, I went back to the cards, and this is what came out:

This is a huge ongoing thing for me, and I’ve made good progress this year, but my goal is to have my scraps down to only one (large) bin, and have everything else either used up, gone, or processed into my pre-cut drawers and containers. So I still have a long way to go, and I’ll be working on this for awhile.
I had to stop doing the pre-cut processing for awhile, since I couldn’t run a rotary cutter, but I’m back to being able to use it for a little bit at a time, so if I just give it a few minutes a day, I think I can handle it and make some more progress. I also bagged up a bunch and gave them away, and I may do that again.
How about you? Are your scraps still out of control? Were they good, and then as you work, they kinda got out of hand again? It’s a good idea to revisit this task every now and then, just to keep them under control. I used to do it for at least 30 minutes a week, but had to take a forced break — I’m ready to add it back in to my schedule.
Let’s do it! Besides, it’s fun to play in the scraps (I usually end up starting a new quilt)!
I managed to finish two quilts in October that had been in my UFO bin for a few years (ahem). Got them quilted, bound, and snuggled under one the other night. My scraps are in bins – I’m making a mess of one of them today 🙂
I have 5 UFO’s that are now in the final stages of being completed. I just need to add labels and bind them. Hoping to finish these soon.
Didn’t do anything with UFO’S, since I don’t have my machine up and running yet, however I could work on getting a handle on scraps. I think I will do that this month and hopefully soon get my sewing room put together.
We our moving into a new home. And your challenge for November is perfect! A new sewing room and will work on my scraps !
I got one of my 2 UFO quilt tops finished and donated. The other UFO is laid across my long arm waiting for me to get time and motivation at the same time. As for my scraps, they live and multiply in a large clear recycling bag and I go fishing in there when I need something. I do cut to specific sizes at times but not always. I’ve made 2 string quilts so far and my bag has barely went down. I’m convinced quilting cotton contains 50% rabbit fur so the scraps multiply every time it’s cut.
I agree! I think they multiple. I finished 7 quilts in October and yes all the scraps are waiting. So for November I will getting cut up into precut sizes and the rest go into my dog beds I donate to a local shelter.
I did work on a UFO that I found, still have to get the borders on but soon it’ll be ready for closing. My scraps could use some work and I’m trying to work on them a couple of times a month. Seems like one can never catch up🤪.
My big priority right now is to get busy on some Xmas quilts and continue purging.
I’m getting serious about moving…but there is just SO much to do around the house to get it ready to sell let alone clearing out excess. I always get stuck in the sewing room as I think I can finish and gift projects not understanding the amount of time involved. I’m in awe of super productive people like you Shelly. Even with your bad elbow you hung in there and got more done than most!
I did manage to get my scraps organized into shoe box size bins. It is much easier to see them by color assortment.
I did finish a quilt. I have been working on getting my wool cleaned & sorted. Helped a friend finish packing up her house so as i clean my sewing room trying to get rid of stuff i don’t need or want. Still need to work on crumb blocks – scraps.
I find I’m having to choose between challenges each month. I did work on UFOs last month so that’s a win. As far as scraps go……..sigh………I keep finding them, here and there…….piles of them, bags of them, boxes of them. I also have containers of strips so at least those are some all together. Maybe it’s time to dump all the bags and boxes together, pull out the strips, squares, and triangles, and declare 2022 the year of the strips and see just how many different patterns I can find and just make strip quilts next year. Even though I’m not able to do everything, I’m pleased with what I’m been able to accomplish in my sewing area this year. Thank you, Shelly.
Since this challenge, I have worked on 10 UFO’s… Finished one quilt and one quilt top, and am close to finishing a hand-quilted baby quilt and a Christmas quilt.
Organizing scraps continue to be a challenge–I’m glad you picked this to work on this month. Seems my focus has been to cut them for use in ongoing scrap quilt projects. I’m currently stuck on what to do with an overwhelming amount of the 2″ squares I’ve cut. Maybe there will be a snow storm or two keeping me in the house to work on that this Winter!
Scraps are one of the categories I actually have under control! It took me years to get here, but as long as I trim them all down to precut sizes at the beginning of each month, I stay ahead of them. Of course, I’ve been trying to use up my bin of 2.5” scraps and I can’t seem to make it follow the plan!
I’m so glad your elbow is doing better.
Hmmm . . . the UFO thing . . . I forgot all about the challenge; but, did it anyway. While looking for another UFO for another reason, I pulled out the one (almost) finished. It was cut out and the piecing was simple. It is being basted today. It’s on my cutting table so I have to finish and get it OFF! Christmas gifts need my attention. Scraps can wait. I don’t have all that many so they don’t really bother me.
Have been working on two UFOs both are old.
But I still love them. The 1st is a BOM which I bought as a kit from a LQS well after it was over. I want a king so changing setting. Working on a hexie medallion center. Just lack about 30 3/4” hexies for the border.
The 2nd has been on my design wall since September. It’s name called and I have been adding blocks. A sampler skill builder. (Where you make 3 blocks a month.) have one more block to go. It will not be finished but progress ❤️
I finished 5 UFOs in October and finished another 2 to flimsy stage. They were completely finished by Nov 4! I had my own mini marathon 🙂
