News From the Studio, Episode 1795

Thought I’d pop in today with some fun stuff for a change! I’ve been fairly boring lately. I guess that’s what happens when you never go anywhere; and for lack of anything better to do, I’m just working every day! You’d think I’d be catching up some, but I don’t feel like I am.

Anyway, I’ve found a couple things I think you’ll like, so I’m here today to tempt you with those.

Here’s a couple links you might wanna check out:

Rita at Red Pepper Quilts has a tutorial for a Scrappy Cross Quilt. The one she made is absolutely fabulous (as is everything she makes), and it would be a great use of scraps!

Sherri, at A Quilting Life, has an article offering 11 Productivity Tips for Quilters. I need to follow every one of these, but I can’t get my act together enough! It’s something to aspire to.

I’ve started working on my Postage Stamp quilt again. I started this quilt in June of 2011 — you’d think I’d be done by now! I’m doing mine checkerboard style with white, and while I thought I was a lot further along than this, I managed to unearth 14 blocks. Maybe there are others hiding somewhere? And no plan. So I’m gonna make a plan to see how many blocks I still need, and I have lots of parts and pieces, so I should be able to make a few more blocks really quickly. Then I’ll probably find more blocks and have to make a second one!

I’m still making Snowball blocks, too. I’m using all these little scrap projects as my leaders and enders while I’m stitching up the new Block-of-the-Month quilts — I’m so excited to get to show them to you next month!

There’s a couple appliqué projects I’m itching to get back to, and a few of my own quilts I’d love to get quilted up, but that’s not even on the radar, what with the backlog of customer stuff I have here right now.

I did recently buy a few new pantograph patterns I’ve had my eye on, and I’m getting to try one out today. I finished two massive king-sized custom quilts in the last couple weeks, so I’m treating myself to something easy before I move on to the next custom quilt.

As busy as I’ve been, you’d think I’d have more to show you, but nope! I can’t show you the BOM until the big reveal in August, but that’s coming right up, so stay tuned. I have a stack of quilts here that need binding, and I’ll show you those once I’m done. See? I’m still fairly boring!

My Cowboy did buy me a couple presents, and it’s not even my birthday. I completely wore out my Kate Spade cowgirl purse, so he got me another cowgirl purse, and this one is RED!!! It even came with a little zipper pouch inside, and he got me a beanie baby goat. And I’m not even going anywhere to carry a purse, so this one should last me awhile! Plus, he gave it to me without a horror story like the last one.

And then . . . he got me this great tote bag with my horse on it! It was so weird that the morning this arrived in the mail, I had woken up thinking, “I sure do miss my Bonnie.” Strange timing! But this bag is great — it’s got all kinds of pockets. I can envision loading it up with handwork projects to take to a sew day, but alas . . . the plague! (as my friend, Sam Hunter, says — haha!)

I’m off to go see if I can do any more damage to the mess on my cutting table. The next organizing task is coming up Wednesday, and I’m not done with the last one yet!

I was supposed to be leaving this Wednesday for my annual retreat with my best buds, but that’s not happening, either. We’re all sad about that.

Happy stitching! I hope you’re having a wonderful July so far!

Great post. So glad you added the snowball scrappy quilt. I planned to use my scraps, started but had to put aside. Will get it out!

  2. Kerry says:

What a thoughtful man you have. The bags are lovely.
Such a shame about the retreat – they are such fun. Maybe have a sew day and conference call each other in the middle!
Am going to check out your links now – thank you.

Cowboy is a good fella, and thoughtful! Love the photo of you and your quilting friends – that’s one of the hardest things about this pandemic – not being able to be together! You’ve got some fun projects going – are you still needing signature blocks? I was going to give you a plug in one of my posts, but forgot (sorry) so let me know if I still should!

Thanks for sharing the Red Pepper Scrappy Cross Quilt. I have an astounding amount of random 2″ squares that will work out nicely with this. Your Postage Stamp Blocks ROCK! I can’t wait to see the progress you make with these. The tips from Quilting Life are great. Planning, organizing and lists, lists, lists. I’m a list maker. I don’t do well though with the “realistic time frame”. And that Frequent Clean Ups – it’s often a distraction as something I haven’t picked up it a week or a month will catch my attention again, but even that can be progress! Enjoy your progress. Piece!

I love your new handbag – even better than the one that came from the car accident. I had to click over to that post, and laughed so hard, I thought I should send my husband a link to that post. I was scrolling down through the comments, and lo and behold, there was one from me – four years ago! I had already read that post to him, but I sent him a link anyway. Everybody needs to laugh every day. Yes, that’s a great handbag, and you have a great guy.

Good luck with finding your cutting table! Mine is at the present moment only occupied with one piece of fabric. I have projects piled up along the side of it but what I really need to concentrate on is getting the blocks sewn into a top so I can get the sheet they’re folded up in out of the way. I also need to remember how to do my rain dance as it’s getting dry here.

The first time I found your posts was about organizing your cutting table and you posted a photo. I was amazed that someone posted a photo that looked like my house!! You are real!! just like the velveteen rabbit. I have been struggling to reclaim my own space and I live alone!! I have cleared the cutting table. I have taken all the scraps I saved to make 8 1/2 inch borders. I now have 18 yards of them. I use them to frame landscape panels. The rest of the small scraps ( I keep typing craps instead of scraps??) I have cut into 3 /12, 4, 4 1/2, or 5 inch squares.
Shelley you are an inspiration to me. Keep sharing.

Now a question for anyone to respond. I have a sampler quilt I made for my brother. Any suggestions for how to long arm it??

All fun stuff! What a sweetie you have. Blessings,

  9. Jocelyn says:

LOVE your new Cowgirl handbag! And the tote is so sweet! Enjoy them.

I don’t really miss anyone or anything. Except my kids. Both daughter and SIL have their offices in their house; but, their business requires community contact so we are all being very, very cautious. I see my daughter and grandson when they deliver “gramma’s” groceries. On the good side, by sorting/organizing/re-arranging is going really well! In one room all I have to do is take down all my bolts and restack them nice and neat, put a bunch of bag making supplies in appropriate (empty) drawers, and hang a new thread rack!! On the sewing front, I made (for me) a HUGE decision. I have two BOW’s I started and made halfway through. I like them OK, but not enough to want to make the other half. So I stopped! Both are sampler quilts, I will make up my own settings, put them together, quilt them and get them done. New Rulte: NO MORE BOW’s /BOM’s this year!!

  11. Rose Marie Smith says:

Oh My Goodness…………I thought for a few minutes that the gifts were for your birthday and that I had forgotten!!!! I finally got my brain together. So Cowboy gave gifts for no reason!!! What a prince. Do princes ride horses??

  12. Fran Courson says:

Thanks for the links to the Scrappy Cross Quilt and to Sherri’s tips. I am so glad you showed us your progress on your Postage Stamp quilt. I love that quilt! The presents from your Cowboy are priceless! He really knows what to purchase for you.

  13. Love the postage stamp blocks! And your Cowboy? Most husbands should take lessons from him on “how to make your wife’s day get ever so much better!”
