Necktie Candy Boxes

The next Necktie Social quilt has been delivered!

This time I used the “Cloud Nine” pattern, designed by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts. I had lots of little leftover pieces from previous Necktie Social quilts, and this was a great way to use them up! When I was finished, I thought the blocks looked like boxes of assorted candies in necktie fabric, so I named it “Necktie Candy Boxes”.

There are some fun things to look at if you get up close to this quilt:

Necktie fabrics can be really interesting! I tried not to repeat any fabrics within a block, but there are a couple “mistakes” where I accidentally did, but that sure doesn’t hurt anything. The casual observer will probably never know!

Necktie fabrics are inherently dark overall, so to lighten this one up, I chose a creamy yellow sashing, and a floral print border from my stash. I quilted a diagonal grid in each block, and wavy lines in the sashing. The border is quilted with straight lines 2 inches apart.

For the backing, I chose this wonderful wide backing print by Robert Kaufman, called “Library of Rarities”. The binding is the same fabric as the cornerstones, to help tie everything together.

And I attached a label:

This quilt will be auctioned off at the Rose Gala held by Room at the Inn in Greensboro, North Carolina, in May. Room at the Inn “operates housing and programs for single, pregnant women and single mothers with children suffering from homelessness offering them opportunities to have new lives of healthy, hope-filled independence.”

I made the quilt larger than the pattern called for, since we agreed it should be queen-sized to hopefully make it bring in more money. I shipped it off, including care instructions for its new owner, and I hope whoever wins it in the auction loves it and gives it a good home. The money is sure going for a great cause.

I like the contrast between the fabrics in blocks to the sashing. A great way to use up small pieces. I have not used necktie fabric – is it hard? Thanks for sharing!

Very attractive! Necktie prints are always so pretty. Do you restrict them to polyester, or are there silk ties in there too? How about laundering?

So pretty! A good way to use up your scraps from previous quilts. Now I think I’m motivated to get off the couch and sew something!

Weird…I’m using the same “Stamp” pattern for a veteran quilt. Red/blue/creamy whites.
I have some navy fabric with 2” white stars that will work perfectly for the cornerstones if I cut the sashing at 3 1/2”.

Beautiful quilt. I could see this done in other fabrics too. Great pattern to use up scraps. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve done a tie quilt and sometimes they just wiggled even with a stabilizer.

What a fun quilt! Someone will be enchanted with looking at all those bits and pieces! When my best friend’s husband was killed in an accident, she showed up with all his favorite, silk, designer ties and asked for a memory quilt. I knew she’d paid $600 for his wedding tie. YIKES. That was a project!! I kept the labels and inserted them here and there. She loves the quilt and it is still hanging over her bed, even after many years with her current husband.

You are so talented and generous Shelly! The quilt is amazing.

  12. I would love a tutorial on how to prepare the neckties to make something like this. I love what you did.
