May Studio Organizing, Task One

Posted on May 10, 2023 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Well, I did it! I stopped procrastinating, set in on that messy corner, and here’s what I ended up with!

I haven’t had my hand-quilting frame set up for nearly 11 years! The poor quilt that’s in it has been languishing for that long! It’s not a hand-quilted quilt, either — it’s a quilt that I’m tying — so I should be able to finish it up pretty quickly, if I’ll just take the time to sit and work on it a little at a time. And then it desperately needs to be washed after being stored on the rollers for that long!

And then I’m going to refinish my frame again. It needs to be cleaned up and given another coat of Danish oil, and needs all new leaders and side ties tacked on, so once I get that quilt finished and unmounted, I’ll set in on that. It also needs a couple of hopefully easy repairs that I need to see about getting done. Then it’ll be all fresh and ready for the next quilt I want to hand quilt — and I’m not sure what that will be! But I’m sure I can come up with something . . . because . . .

The shrouded pile behind the frame is the two bins that hold all my to-be-quilted quilts, of which there are still approximately 60 — but that’s better than it was, and I’m trying to work on getting that number much lower much faster.

The ladder underneath the frame is the ladder for access to our attic. My intention is to use it as a quilt ladder sometime soon.

My next goal is to go through those remaining tubs stacked in the corner one at a time and deal with what’s in them, so that the pile of tubs will eventually be completely gone. THAT will be a great feeling!

And guess what? As usual, none of that took me nearly as long as my head had me imagining it would! Why do I do this to myself??

But anyway, now that it’s done, it’s time to move on to another task — yes, already! What shall we tackle this time? It’s kind of feeling like “spring cleaning” weather, now that we have more sunshine highlighting all the grunge of winter that’s taken over my house.

I have plenty more piles to go through, so let’s do this:

Tackle one annoying pile in your sewing space

I have more than one, but here’s the one that’s annoying me the most right now:

This stack on top of my rolling carts keeps getting taller and teeter-ier (is that even a word?), so I’m gonna tackle it before it topples and causes me to have to pick it all up off the floor.

What about you? Do you have a pile you just keep adding to? A pile you’re not sure what’s in it? A pile that’s annoying you by its mere presence in your space? A pile that’s about to topple over because you just keep adding to it instead of dealing with it? (I’m raising my hand here on all of these.) Let’s tackle that pile and get rid of it — show it who’s boss and deal with it no more — it’ll feel so good to have it gone. Let’s do it!

My studio has gotten messier than usual. I’m going to start straightening surfaces right now. Setting the timer for 50 minutes. Thanks for the nudge!

I HAD to clean the quilt room before last week Wednesday. The carpet needed restretching, which should have been done two or three years ago. Everything had to be moved. I still don’t have everything replaced, because I’m assessing as I go – re-homing, moving, discarding, etc. I also needed to replace some of those fabric cubes that store things in my bookcase/ironing surface, because they are becoming out of shape and the edges are shredding. (The new ones arrived today, so no more procrastinating.)

Yes I have a few bugging-me piles. Need to clean my house so tackle them both tomorrow or Friday.

I just tackled one pile today in anticipation of the arrival of an embroidery machine. I needed to make room for it. I’m hoping to use it to make my labels. I tackled a pile in my garage yesterday in anticipation of the arrival of a freezer. Whatever it takes to get them done.

I have piles of stuff everywhere. Not just fabric, but clothes and other stuff as well. I’ve been busy working and haven’t taken any time to do anything extra. I’m needing to stay motivated to sew and quilt. I hope to get a pile worked up sooner rather than later. Lucky you to have room for your quilting frame set up!

Good for you–nice to see the progress.
I have been working through a pile of scraps for too long! But I do enjoy piecing with scraps, which has become part of the process. This work (or should I call it play) is also helping with goal setting and organizing. For the most part I’m enjoying working on UFO’s, with the exception of a quilt top made of large pieces from the scrap pile–that got lots of greens gone! Thanks for keeping us motivated!

With multiple annoying piles, I am going to have to figure out which one is the MOST annoying and do that one today!

Yea for the organizing done. I have a pile that is this that and everything that needs sorting, filing and and throwing away. I’m sure not enough throw away.
How is the planned new house/barn coming along. Having all this sorted will sure make the move when ever it happens alot easier.
