Maple Leaf Quilt-Along, Step 5

Posted on October 11, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Brunswick Forest

So many leaves! But really, the leaves are starting to add up on the ground around here, too. We walked out one morning to do chores, and the back porch was just full of them! We haven’t even had a hard frost yet. In fact, it’s not even been below 40 degrees yet (thankfully).

I’ve been slowly plugging away at my pile of leaves. As slowly as I’m working, making 160 leaves for my throw quilt sounds pretty daunting, but I’ll eventually get there. It’s the cutting that is slowing me down, since I can only manage it for a few minutes at a time.

I love seeing the photos you’ve been sending me! Here is a bunch that Christine made (such pretty fabrics):

And here is a wonderful pile of leaves that Diane is working on — her batiks are making lovely leaves:

I got antsy to see what mine are going to look like, and sewed some into a block — I think I’m gonna love it!

Anyway, I’m back with the next layout option today, and this time, it’s a lot easier than the previous ones. This one makes a table runner. Here’s one option for it:

And here’s another:

All the details can be found in the downloadable PDF here: MapleLeafLayout3

And this time, we’re finally having that give-away I’ve been promising! I’m giving away this fat quarter bundle of prints that might be suitable to use in the backgrounds of your leaves. There are 4 fat quarters in the bundle, and if that’s not enough for you, I can tell you that Sew Sweet Quilt Shop has plenty more where these came from.

All you have to do for a chance to win these four is leave a comment here on this post. You don’t even have to be quilting along to enter; it’s open to anyone. I’ll draw for the winner on Friday, October 15th.

And I’ll be back on the 18th with our final layout option. So many leaves!

UPDATE: The winner of the FQ bundle is Mary D.! Thanks to everyone who played along!

These are lovely background prints! I am not sewing yet but saving all your posts. My sweet 97 year old mother fell again and is in the hospital so my days are spent at the hospital. All the room changes have added to her confusion.

Your block is so cute! Love those little leaves. I so badly want to do some! But…I’ve told myself to concentrate on getting my mess organized and get working on the 6 quilts I want to make for Christmas. Maybe I can cut a few for leader/enders….hmmmm, tempting!

I think they are really cute!

I love your leaves, and I love autumn colors. They are so warm. I think I have a GO! die of applique leaves. They might make a nice border for my leaf quilt.

  13. Debra Freese says:

I’ve been working really hard on finishing projects for Christmas and a little bit of selfish sewing the last few weeks.
Now I need to get back to the longarm.

  14. Am making a scrap quilt throw for a wedding gift and you gave me the idea to put intermittent blocks of the maple leaves in it as the wedding is in early November. Thanks.

Love seeing how your leaves are coming together! I finally got started on mine and they are so cute and addictive! I am doing them as leaders/enders, so I’ve only finished 7 so far, but I am loving them!

I’ve only got a few leaves made before being diverted to other things. I’m planning on using mine as a filler in a nature quilt. I have so many blocks I want to make so I’m going to do them in my nature fabric (rocks, leaves, critters, etc.) so it’s going to be a kitchen sink quilt.

  23. Cindy Wienstroer says:

I have finished 10 more hand-stitched leaves for the quilt along. Am cutting more out but it might be a small table topper.

  24. Johnna Clarke says:

Mom loved any Maple Leaf pattern. She would be thrilled with yours. All these leaves are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the layouts.

  25. Ginabeth says:

The leaves are cute! Thanks for all the hard work during your injuries. We have some leaves here in mid TN where it has not been below 49 at night. Guess nature just knows it cycle.

  26. Marilyn Holder says:

Love the leaves! Any fabric with a hint of fall color qualifies for the blocks. When the kids and the grandkids were little, I always walked them through the yard for leaf pickup and we finished with baskets full. Then we would sit and study the different colors, absolutely fascinating.

  27. Mary D. says:

I finally got started and made some leaves last night. They’re so cute! I’m loving all the layout choices but haven’t picked one yet.

  28. Shirley Guier says:

I’m getting a few made and they are fun to do.

  29. Joan says:

The look of your leaf block is fantastic–what fun! Yes, leaves all around here, so motivating to quilt with leaves!

  30. Marlene Clausen says:

My eight tiny leaves are all there are going to be; so, am working on designing a layout for a pillow or tote bag.

  31. Karen says:

Love all the different leaves. And thank you for the pattern. I could use a table runner, so think I’ll aim to do that. And those prints are lovely. Thank you for doing these give-aways and sew-alongs. It’s really fun and appreciated.
