Macy Marie

A little over three years ago, my friend, Amy, posted on FaceBook that she was looking for an inexpensive sewing machine for her daughter, and was asking for recommendations.

Amy’s daughter, Macy, was confined to home while undergoing treatment for a tumor in her jaw, and all she wanted for her 10th birthday was a sewing machine!

I immediately messaged Amy and said: “Don’t buy one! I have one I will give you for her.” So I met up with Amy and gave her the sewing machine, and it made that brave little girl very happy on her birthday!

And what she has done since is nothing short of incredible!

While undergoing treatment for her illness, Macy received a bag that she got to fill with beads for every successful procedure she went through, called Beads of Courage. Macy realized there was a shortage of these bags for all the children who should receive them, so she started making bags to donate to the hospital.

She got our local guild involved, and, as a group, we made over 2000 bags for the Beads of Courage program. You can read all about it here: Macy Sews Beads of Courage Bags.

Macy’s illness and treatment qualified her for getting a wish granted from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and her wish was for a bigger and better sewing machine! Bernina USA stepped in and gave Macy a dream machine, for sure!

And Macy has put that machine to the most amazing use. (And she passed the little machine I gave her down to her younger brother, Max, who is now quilting right along with his sister!)

At our guild’s 2019 quilt show, Macy entered a quilt that she had made especially for her grandmother, using dresses that had been worn by her grandmother as a young girl, that had been embroidered by Macy’s great-grandmother.

It’s amazing! It’s got such a story, and she explained all about it to me. I was super impressed with how she came up with this and did it!

Macy recently posted on the Bernina blog all about how she made this quilt. You can go read her story HERE.

Macy has created so many quilts for friends and family:

. . . including a quilt made from a veteran’s uniforms for their family friend, Jerry:

A while back, Macy called and asked for recommendations on a really quick quilt pattern that she could make really fast. She was creating quilts for a charity auction, and needed to finish them by a deadline and wanted a couple more options so they wouldn’t all be alike. I sent her a copy of my Daddy’s Favorite quilt pattern, and she and Max went to work!

They created 11 quilts for the auction, and raised $38,000 for the Shootout/Super Cat for Kids Charity Auction — I can’t even wrap my mind around that accomplishment, let alone out of a 13-year-old and her little brother!

And Macy called me yesterday with some really exciting news, so I know there are many more great things in Macy’s quilting future coming up! She said: “Who knew that little sewing machine you gave me would have led to all this?!”

Indeed. But in all reality, it’s the operator behind the little machine that is doing such great things. I’m SOOOOO proud of you, Macy!

Yes! Impressive what our young people can accomplish. Having taught sewing classes to all girls and boys in our school–the potential of young sewists is very powerful for both girls and boys. (I wrote a master’s thesis on this topic!) As quilters we need to support this–and you certainly did with your gift of a sewing machine. What a story–yeah!
