June Organizing Task One

Posted on June 11, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

How is it already time for a June Studio Organizing Challenge? Can this year really be almost half over? I do know that summer has hit full force here. The heat has all the animals off their feed, and I’ve switched from hot coffee to iced coffee for the season! And it seems like just last week I was complaining about the cold. Time sure flies.

How did you do with the last challenge? In spite of my overly-busy schedule that has been completely insane of late, I did manage to clean out my pen and pencil collections. I was happy to throw away all the dead ones, and surprised to learn that I had more highlighters than I thought I did, because I had it on my shopping list to buy more highlighters, and now I don’t have to (for quite a while, it would seem). And I may never have to buy another lead pencil ever!

I cleaned out all my quilting and sewing marking pencils:

Then I went through all the ones in the office:

I cleaned out all my various coffee-mug pencil holders, and now everything is grouped together by like kind, extras are stored away, and it’s much easier to find a pencil when I need one.

Who knew that would feel so good and make such a difference? How did you do?

I’m thrilled that it was an easy task, and I could sure use another easy one this time, too. I’m also thrilled that I had the great idea to make this deck of cards, because my brain is too busy to think up new tasks right now, so I can just let the cards tell me what to do. This time, I randomly chose this one:

And altho I seriously don’t have time in my schedule right now to start anything new, this one has been on the docket for awhile, so I’m getting ready to cut into this glorious bundle. It’s appropriate for the season, after all, so I feel perfectly justified, especially since my cards told me I could do it!

Do you have the urge to start something new? What will you be giving yourself permission to start? Even if you give yourself permission to RE-start on an old project, just go with that. Sometimes old projects can feel like new ones, if we’ve let them marinate for long enough (speaking from experience, of course).

I’m interested in hearing what new project you’ll be starting or re-starting, even tho I’m afraid I’ll be tempted by some of the things you present to me, but I’ll take my chances — leave a comment!

I never touched my pencils and paper but I think they’re pretty organized. My new project is your free pinwheel baby quilt pattern for a friend; baby’s due sometime this month. I’ve got all the fabric selected, I think. I just need to take time and create it. And, as an old neighbor guy used to say, wintertime is just around the corner…..

I can understand why your animals are off their feed – this hot weather has been the pits! (Hasn’t put me off my feed though, unfortunately!!) I might need to clean up my stash of pens and pencils in my quilt room. The ones I use often are pretty organized, but I have one pen cup I’ve been ignoring, so I’ll start there!

I didn’t take time this month to do pencils … on more than one occasion I found the need to do- remember those pens I purchased from you? Did I mention to you where they were going – hidden from grandkids…? I have signed up for two classes so that will be my something new – now I will take the time to organize my pencils, ect!!!

  4. I did go through all my pencils and pens. I threw lots of things away. The “spice” drawers I keep them in close without a problem. I also went through the mugs and things. I ended up with one less container.
I am doing small things during recovery but would like to start a baby quilt. I will have to wait and see if that happens.

A friend had completed her Village quilt and she sparked my interest to get out mine that I had put away last year. I finally found it. We had to work together a n something at church so we each brought ours and had fun telling each other about ours. It inspired me to make time to finish mine now.

I started cleaning out pens and pencils. I have thrown some away at home and in the trailer. Probably have many more to go. By the way I did not get to report my blocks for May, which was none. On the road, and must be in remote areas, as very little internet or cell phone coverage. Got asked if we could come to the lake early this year, so may be gone even longer than normal. However, working on planning memory quilt layout since blocks are made. Not all blocks same size so need to figure out what to fill with and how much around on what blocks.

I am one step ahead of you! This morning I swiped everything off my cutting table and after stash diving began cutting 60 * triangles.
I’m blaming it on the library. Yesterday’s I finally decided to go inside to browse. I checked out Wise Craft Quilts by Blair Stocker. I’m making the Taupe quilt from the book out of lightweight denim, shirtings in white, blues, and taupe. Plus some other textured fabrics. We’ll see how it goes. I like her style and giving myself permission to experiment. 😉

I have some Back Porch charm packs and have wanted to make something with them. Yea! Now I have permission to start something. I didn’t check my pencils and pens, but I may do that, too.

Yes i got all the pen & pencils tested & sharpened – blister to prove it! I have just started a baby quilt for my newest grand-daughter due Sept or Oct but we see the family over the 4th so i am working on that. Also started an fusible appliqué wall hanging for my brother-in-law’s Aug birthday. Also sorted lots of fabric that i received – giving loads to a cousin since she has a quilt barn!

You did a great job with your pens and pencils. I am going to start quilting again, as it has been more than a year since I have done any quilting. And with five grandchildren I want to make quilts for, it’s time to get up off the couch 🙂

  11. I did clean out my dead pens, dried out highlighters and too short pencils. Sure glad your cards told us we could start a new project! I finished one, finished the blocks for another so felt justified in starting a new one (it is a pattern test so it seemed like the right time) 😉

My main sewing room is almost empty!! YEAH!! Nothing is going in front of my two design walls. All that is left to do is get two shelving units constructed (for another room) and get the supplies together so my daughter and SIL can come build my new roll around pressing/cutting station.

Am still in quilting mode, so my new one will be this month’s QOV top. I did finish hand quilting and binding a 60 x 60 baby quilt that’s been in the works for 5 years. All I have to do is sew out my quilt label and sew it on.

I had a lost project since late May. I just found it tonight, thank goodness, and will be doing the pen, pencil challenge.

  14. Start something new! You say. I don’t need to be told twice. I can’t help myself, when you give me permission. On a serious note I do have to create a project for an upcoming range of fabric. So some secret sewing will be in my schedule. I would love to tell you all about it, but that will get me in trouble and we can’t have that. Ladies please send me some of your heat, I am over Winter down here in South Australia already.

I did reorganize my to-go box of tools which included my marking tools so a win there. I’m trying very hard not to start anything new, but I did just restart a hourglass pink and white project as a leader ender. Seems like we are on the same wavelength.

Stay cool! I’m so happy that we are warming up into the 70’s and 80’s finally.

I love the challenge. I just might be an overachiever and do more than one.😊

the pencil and pen challenge was an easy one for me as I keep then in cups and such all over the house, but I did go through them all and got rid of any that did not write or was skipping, and it will be easy as if i grab one out of any given cup and it is not working for me I toss it.

the new challenge will be an easy one again as I have already started a new one. but I am sure that i will start another new one in the next week or so as I have 2 people that are wanting me to do memory quilts out of their childs t shirts

hope everyone is having a fabulous June happy quilting and just spending time on you and your family

Thanks; permission to start a new project, a SAL from Primitive Gatherings in red, white, and blue flags.

I organized my pens/pencils too. Who knew that ball point pens dried up and were unusable?!! Just a few are left in the bunch; of course, you can use only one at a time! And I have a large collection of lead pencils and two pencil sharpeners!

  20. Candice says:

Start a new project? OK! At a quilt retreat (prepandemic) someone had given me a bunch of 3 inch card stock hexis and assorted precut red fabrics, Well, seeing the elderly veterans collecting donations outside my grocery store before Memorial Day really touched my heart, And the paper poppy they gave me for my donation got me to thinking….I could use black centers and use the red hexis to make poppies! So, I’m gonna start making poppies!
