July Studio Organizing, Task Two

Posted on July 28, 2023 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Where has this month gone? I thought I’d get so much more done than I have.

I did clean out three project tubs. None of them are emptied, but they are cleaned out and I know what’s in them. Two of them are projects that should be fairly quick and easy to finish, so I hope to show those to you soon.

My ultimate goal is to have way fewer tubs, but so far, when I get an empty one, I fill it right back up with something else! Uff!

Our guild is fixin’ to have a garage sale as a fundraiser to help out our community service projects, so I’ve started a box for that. I hope I can find lots of things to donate.

Meanwhile, it’s already time for another task, so I hope we’re all up for the challenge.

What shall we do this time?

In the interest of finding more things to donate to the garage sale, I think it’s a good time to:

Sort through the books and magazines

It needs doing periodically, because invariably, if you’re using what you have, you riffle through them, and they get unorganized; plus, there might be some you decide you no longer need or want, and magazines still keep coming in somehow!

It’s another goal of mine that all my books and magazines fit in the one bookcase I have for that purpose. I managed to get to that point, but then found another stack of books while cleaning out tubs. So I guess it’s time to clean it out again. And I have a small stack of magazines to sort through, too. Not to mention all the dust bunnies that need to go. I can see from this photo that the top two shelves need the most work.

So off I go to do that. How about you?

  1. It lost my message again. … grrrrrrr….. I don’t need to improve my papers so I sorted fat quarters. Hello form Maine

I gave my daughter some cross stitch and embroidery books as she’s just started on that route. She is enjoying it and the stitch instructions will help her along the way.

This is a good one – I have one book case for quilt type books- one bookcase for Artsy type books – last clearing time I avoided those, maybe it’s time!

I’ve just completed a re-sort of my fabrics since my guild, too, has an upcoming yard sale. Just one shopping bag to donate this time but I did have my hands on all of may fabric and organized it by type — dots, stripes, floral, etc — to make it unfamiliar. I’m not sure whether I’ll stick with it or restore the previous color-based order. We’ll see.

    Books may have to wait.

Yes, this for me is and ongoing project. Bring an armfull or more of books and magazines every time I go to our local quilters meeting. They use this as a fund raiser, by putting things people donate into piles with an empty lunch bag for people to put their name in (on a piece of paper). Each time your name goes into the bag you pay the kitty a quarter. If it’s something people really like, they pay and put in many dollars worth of their name to be drawn. At the end of our meeting, names are drawn from the bags and the “birthday” winners are announced. These are called birthday bags because it started out with us donating only on our birthday, but morphed into a way to find new homes for unwanted quilting supplies and sometimes things like homemade jelly, zuchinni and other garden surplus!!!

Part of the shelf I was going to organize in my closet has magazines. I still have to get to it so I have done no organizing this month but hope to soon. I really need to clean and vacuum. lol

I went through all my quilt books and magazines, fashion patterns and magazines, and cross stitch when I moved. Some went to Goodwill, all quilt-related went to the local guild, and the fashion related to a young woman who is very excited about clothing construction and just learning to sew. NOW . . . all those books that are in the car need to go to our massive used book store, some to put in the free bin and some to convert to BookCash. Helps me keep up w/my favorite authors at a reasonable cost and those books keep recycling. IF I can get myself to the bookstore, then will consider this challenge met!!

I could definitely use a dedicated book shelf- I just recently sorted through 1 small container for patterns- I filled it to over flowing so I purchased identical container to sort & store all patterns into 2! This is a good project for me this month!

I think my books are in pretty good order taking up a shelf and a half on my bookcase. No longer double stacked on three shelves. 😱 I’m making progress on getting my spare sewing cabinet, aka flat surface, cleared off so I will keep working on that.

Over the years I discarded magazines I no longer wanted leaving me with 2 publications adding 10 each year to my shelf. It is time to reorganize them from three stacks into only one. But I need to clear shelves of stuff in order to get to them. That will take some time. Meanwhile I am finishing a top and layering a quilt. Time marches on!

Unknowingly have I pretty much combined the 2. I went through several plastic containers of fabric to see what was there. Lots of pinwheels and parts of pinwheels. Found some other blocks as well. Pressed it all, and it is now by my machine to go into small 18 inch square quilts for a Carolina Home project Carole posted. Have been going through magazines both quilting and cooking. Still have more to go through but not as many now. Some have found their way out the door! I am slowly working my way through. Too hot to be outside, so putting my inside time to some good use. Getting back to reading too!

I am trying to down the leftovers from 20 years of projects. But if you make one, then there are leftovers from that. Again. Sigh. This is why many of us acquired leftovers from deceased or nursing home quilters. We can never completely use up this mess and some quilter will acquire that. I am trying to get rid of books and magazines though. But where will that stuff go? See how hard this is!!
