July 350 Blocks Report

Posted on August 1, 2022 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

I should have posted this earlier, but I was preoccupied with having my stitches taken out today — woohoo! I now have permission to lift, push, and pull as tolerated to build the strength back in my elbow. I still have some pain, but honestly, I’m very nearly back to where I was pre-surgery, so the healing is going faster this time, thank goodness!

I haven’t tried rotary cutting yet, but as soon as I get this post finished, that’s what I’m gonna do — I’m anxious to see if I can do it yet. I have a lot to get done.

So, yeah, this whole elbow replacement ordeal kept my block numbers down this month. Pretty much everything I got done was before the 14th! And still, I ended up with a total of 32, which was one over the goal, so I’m good with that. I had a week’s warning that this was coming, so I had a little time to prepare, but still, it’s never enough (or I would have cut more)!

Here’s some of what I did . . . and you’ve probably seen it all in my previous post, but go ahead and have another look!

Nine blocks for Patchwork City:

Seven blocks for Martha Washington’s Finest:

One block for Blast from the Past Mystery:

And several more blocks for my Mad Dash quilt.

So that’s it for me for July. How did you do?

It’s your turn to report in and let us know what you’ve been working on. Don’t forget: if you want to share photos, you can join Christopher’s FaceBook group HERE, and we can actually see your blocks.

We have a new block goal for August — another 31 blocks for a year-to-date total of 227 — we’re on the downhill side!

I’ve updated the Project Page as of this morning, so be sure and double check me to make sure I’m not cheating you out of any blocks.

The June prize winner is Ginny. She’s up to 252 blocks so far, which is great considering she’s been building a new house, moving in, and traveling for this entire year!

Happy Stitching in August. I plan to be busy with lots of things, so I’m not sure what all I’ll get done.

187 for July – the number surprise me again.

  2. Diana S says:

Love your blocks Shelley. You did really well for having surgery. As far as making blocks this month I have a big fat zero! Parts for blocks made but none completed. Did get 3 quilts bound tho. This month should be better

  3. Amanda M. says:

I’m so glad to hear you’re doing better! Yay! In July I made 4 blocks for 2 projects. I’ll be glad to get done with the extreme heat since it sucks my motivation out of me.

  4. Randy Menninghaus says:

    93 for July

  5. KT says:

Glad your recovery is going well. Best wishes for continuing improvement! I got 35 blocks done in July. I have a quilt to bind and another that needs to be quilted, but it’s been too hot to do anything other than piece–and sometimes too hot to even spend any time at my machine!

  6. Judy Smith says:

I only had 11 blocks this month, but 3 projects quilted and bound. Maybe I can catch up in August.

  7. Fran says:

So enjoy seeing your blocks! They are beautiful! Hope you have a rapid recovery. You so need to use your arm.
July was my best month ever. I made 308 blocks. I will probably never make that many again, but I had such fun making them.

  8. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Sadly only 2 blocks for me but also did a pincushion & needle box. Maybe this month can get more done!

  9. Debra Freese says:

    64 this month.
50 of those are setting blocks for @jessicadayon #scrappysamplerbotw

At a quilt retreat I sewed together 8 blocks that will make two Indigo Radial wall quilts. Pattern by
    @cotton&burbon

So, at last month’s quilt guild a bag of Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks & pieces followed me home. 🙄 I mean, how could I leave them? There were 16 finished blocks. I’ve made 2 more plus four ½ setting blocks. I could stop there but if I can squeeze out 5 more blocks I could add another row. 😁

    • Dianne D says:

Debra, just curious…are you in the Kirksville area and were those blocks chocolate brown?

      • Dianne D says:

Hi Debra, I’m Celia’s friend that shared those blocks! Can’t tell you how thrilled I am that they found a good home!

        • Debra Freese says:

I am a longarm quilter but I also enjoy hand piecing and quilting. I am working on your/our blocks in the evenings. Thanks for sharing.
If you use Instagram (I am @7sistersquilting), I post photos of my projects. I also shared photos of my layout with Celia. 😊

  10. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for July: 43. The scrap blocks are getting bigger. I have been sewing scrap blocks for 2 years now and I’m not sure the pile is smaller! I have completed 5 quilts and have 3 to quilt and bind. Then I will go back to my unfinished quilts for a while. Just keep sewing and cutting and sewing; actually keeps me sane with all the “stuff” going on in the news. Glad you are improving with your elbows.

  11. Pam Desilets says:

Hi all, I was able to get 225 blocks finished for July. Not sure I will be able to get any sewing in for August. I am having my second knee(left) total replacement on August 4. Happy sewing to all. Glad to hear your recovery is going well.

  12. denniele says:

You had a busy month! I can add 16 to my total. One day…there will be a huge number!

  13. Karen E. says:

I can just imagine how happy you are to get those stitches out and be able to start using your elbow again. I’m most impressed that you got all those blocks done even through recovery. I made 339 blocks during July for a YTD total of 1405.

  14. Louise says:

Glad to hear that you are healing so well. I made 144 blocks in July. I’m thrilled with how much I was able to do. It has been a very busy month.

  15. Dianne D says:

So glad to hear you are making progress with the recovery! You are amazing for what you’ve done during this whole “adventure “!
As someone said earlier, a big fat zero for me in July! But in my defense (ha!), I’ve been machine quilting baby quilts and have done binding on 3 baby quilts, two twin sized quilts and 2 quilts of valor. Hopefully will get back to piecing soon. Take care of yourself and don’t rush the recovery.

  16. Marsha P says:

48 for me which is surprising since I’m still working on quilting the finished tops

  17. Shirley Guier says:

I was hoping your healing would go faster! I have 20 fr8m mad dash and 100 for a rail fence made out of ties, suits, shirts and jeans. It went so fast after I had all the fabric cut and stabilized. So I have 120 blocks for July.

  18. Kathy says:

I was going strong at the beginning of the month then got really busy. I did get 45 blocks completed.

  19. Kathy says:

45 blocks this month. Glad you’re on the mend.

  20. Peggy says:

No new blocks made this month, but I have worked on my friend’s quilt when my back lets me. I have quilted large parts and am trying to get them joined in QAYG fashion. I so wish I could have a longarmer do it instead! Your progress despite disability puts me to shame. Glad you are healing.❤️‍🩹

  21. Christi Bentley says:

135 for me……..did a couple of denim quilts, some 4-patch leader/enders, beach cottage blocks, 3 table runners, and 4 pixel chain blocks.

  22. Ceil Podzimek says:

I finished 44 blocks in July. 2 blocks for my sister Rose’s quilt to see how they would look, then I finished all 20 for my sister Anne’s quilt (10 of which I had embroidered the centers), 8 blocks for bags from Lori Holt fabric, and 14 blocks for a charity project. But the blocks will come to a halt until I get 2 quilts quilted and bound, but I’ve already got one of those halfway done.
Glad to hear you’re on the mend. I hope you can get back to rotary cutting and all the rest of the sewing fun. There’s nothing worse than thinking of all the things you need to be doing and your body saying “sorry, not gonna happen!”

  23. Kathi Benchley says:

I completed 36 blocks this month.
So glad to hear you’re getting better!

  24. Paula Mu says:

Glad your elbow is on the mend. I had 99 blocks this month. 8 Branching out, 1 Sherry McConnell Bofthe Month, 2 Spicy color blocks, 3 block heads, 6 Boo Crew, 1 for a mini quilt, 25 Candy Star, 8 Secret Life of Color, 44 Summer Mystery and 1Blast from the Past. That should total 99. I hope August is a good month for everyone.

  25. Sharon Gratz says:

Hi Shelly, Good report on your elbow and hope there wasn’t a problem with rotary cutting…..ease into it. I was able to get 10 blocks done for the July count.

  26. Tanya says:

I hope you are able to use your rotary cutter. I started a new full time job so my sewing is going to be slowing down. I was able to get some sewing done for my queen sized Exploding Heart. My total blocks for July is 91. Take it easy and don’t over due it.

  27. 10 total for the month. You did better than me recuperating from surgery! Hope your healing goes well.

  28. Debbi says:

Well it seems like I had a pretty good month even tho I had a slump near the beginning. However, I did 32 temp blocks to keep up on my temperature quilt, did 2 blast from the past so I’m caught up there, 6 spring fling double nine patch blocks and assembled the flimsy, 95 leader ender blocks (they really up the count but I don’t count them till they are all made or id end up double counting), and I did 42 blocks for the Kimberly quilt along with Gudrun. Also got one quilt quilted on the longarm. Pretty good month for me!

    Total 177 blocks! Yea!

Glad to hear your elbow is healing faster this time. Don’t over do it!

  29. Danice says:

Oh all of your blocks are really nice. I only completed 2 blocks in July. Still working on finishing quilts.

  30. PAULA M M says:

Sorry to be late … I have again zero! But, I did accomplish 2 fabric vases ( Heidi Parks) one dream box…zac foster ‘Nook” … sorry right now instructor is right on the tips of my tongue!!! Also dabbled in some Chicken Scratch embroidery ala Quilt Folk … at least I am happy to be about making again…maybe August will bring me back to quilt block making!

  31. Marlene Colombo says:

0 for July. Still in unpacking mode. I did find the floor in what will be my cutting, sandwiching, pressing room! If you had seen the room just a week ago, you would understand what a BIG change that is. LOL. Am hoping at least some sewing will happen in August.

  32. Joan says:

This was a good month with the total of 64. I finished a table topper and am close to getting three quilt tops done! Good to hear that you are on the mend. Enjoy seeing the progress on the Dash quilt.

  33. Linda Knight says:

I made 199 blocks and quilted and bound 4 donation quilts. I also finished hand quilting about a third of a twin size Grandmother’s Flower Garden and bound it for friends whose mother passed away and left the project unfinished.

  34. Marsha Y. says:

Praying for your complete recovery Shelly!!! My month did not go as planned with husband having back surgery. I did manage to get 26 blocks done. Hoping August will be better as have three smaller quilts that need to be pieced and quilted by the 15th.

  35. Rose Marie Smith says:

I was able to do a big bunch of scrap blocks that will end up in community service quilts. My aim is to dumb down the leftovers!! Not sure this is working. LOL
Put me down for 153 blocks. They are very easy blocks so that will also verify that large number. In August and September I really need to do more stuff that cuts into the unused stash of fabrics and patterns. My sister is working hard to quilt all those community service quilts. She needs a break. Where do I go next? HMMM Let’s see.

  36. Wanda marvel says:

    I late 23 blocks July.

  37. Wendy says:

Only 11 for me. I sewed quite a bit in July, but not making blocks. I also read quite a few books. Maybe August will be better for block making!

  38. Deanna says:

July brought 72 more blocks here. So happy to hear you are healing.

  39. 47 blocks for me in July.

  40. Judy Sovereign says:

Have been working on the quilt that hates me. Got 12 blocks done on it and did a labyrinth quilt and that was 9. So total was 21.

  41. cathy k says:

The number for July was 88 blocks and I am very pleased. July was a busy month, family reunion to put together. I am glad you are doing well.

  42. Barbara B says:

I completed 86 blocks in July

  43. So glad to hear that your elbow is improving quickly!
I ended up with 48 blocks for July.

  44. Bev C. says:

I’m happy that your recovery is going smoothly. My count for the month is 112. I finished a double wedding quilt top and put that aside and am still trying to finish the quilt tops that I had set aside earlier. I am happy to say I quilted and bound 2 quilts and sandwiched another. The last one that I sandwiched actually catches me up as I’m going to donate the double wedding ring top to a friend that is a longarmer and she is going to finish it and donate it. Happy happy camper here!

  45. Glad to hear you are nearly better. A quiet month of sewing for me, 16 blocks to be added to my total. Too much other stuff happening, I need to get some jobs done and crossed off my list for good. Then I hope there is more sewing time.

  46. Phillis Harding says:

I am glad your recovery is going so well. My husband was out of town for 2 weeks so I was able to sew a lot more. I have been trying to use all of my scraps and have succeeded in reducing them to 1/3. I actually got 977 blocks done this month! I will probably never get that much done again. These blocks completed 14 tops. Just need to find time to quilt them.

  47. 18 blocks in July for me

  48. Christine T says:

So good to hear you’re making progress – trust your elbow will get steadily stronger and you’ll be able to do more and more with it. Not a good block month for me – another 0. However, I have sorted and boxed most of my sewing stuff ready for the house move so that’s a positive. Just the rest of the house to sort now!

  49. sharong says:

    ZERO blocks again this month
I was away from home most of the month and seemed to have lost my desire to sew– August so far is a little better. I love your kitty and hope that you heal quickly. I imagine that an elbow replacement will be complicated.

  50. Carissa says:

All of your blocks look great. So glad to hear that your recovery is going well. Praying that this really brings you back to normal soon.

I did a lot of piecing, but only finished one block. I’ll be getting back on track this month though!

  51. Barb Magruder says:

I’m glad to hear your are on the mend! July was a better month for me. I did 68 blocks and quilted and bound 2 quilts.

  52. Sherrie says:

    Hi,
I would like to join in on this challenge. I’ve done quite a few blocks the last few month, would those count towards my count for the year? Just e-mail me and let me know. Have a great day!

  53. Ginabeth says:

    I had 64 blocks in July 2022

  54. Clara says:

It was good to read that your surgery went well and you are on the mend.
I just realized that I had not reported. 24 blocks for the month. Eye surgery had an impact on my time; however, I’m recovering and looking forward to a productive September.

  55. Barb Roberts says:

    Hi Shelly,
You once said it’s never too late to report in. Yikes, I added up my July blocks and never reported them. I had 100 in July.
