July 350 Blocks Report

Posted on August 1, 2018 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Here we are in August already! How can that be?

It’s been 7 months, and I still haven’t had my cutting table completely cleared off once this entire year! This is STILL pretty much its current state — I leave myself one little clear corner to work on — pathetic! I think I need to issue another organizing challenge soon.

All my sewing this past month was “secret sewing”. I’ve been working really hard on the new Block-of-the-Month quilts for Sew Sweet Quilt Shop, and I can’t wait to get to show them to you! The big reveal is August 11th, so if you can’t make it to the shop that day, I’ll be posting pictures here for you to see.

Meanwhile, here’s a sneak peek of this year’s color options . . .

The traditional colorway, blues and creams this year — so calm and lovely:

And the modern colorway, brights with an eye-popping accent of black — it’s happy-yummy!

So that boosted my total this month to 85 blocks. How did you do?

I hope you all got a lot of blocks made this month. Leave a comment on this post to tell us what you were up to in July, and how many blocks you got made! Check the Project Page to make sure I have your totals correct, and to see how everyone else is doing — I think as a group we’re really doing well so far this year!

Our new goal for August is 31 blocks, for a year-to-date total of 232. That’s one block a day, if we can swing it!

The June prize winner is Randy. She’s up to 358 blocks so far this year! She’s past the 350 point, so now she can cruise easy the rest of the year.

August is shaping up to be super busy for me, but I’m still hoping for lots of time at my sewing machine. How about you?

78 blocks for me this month. They are all blocks for which I made parts earlier this year. I get to count them now that they are finished.

  2. katie z. says:

259 new blocks for me, making a total of 1092. I’m making up for lost time! It’s such a relief that while there are still things I struggle to do with my hand, sewing actually goes fine and doesn’t strain it.

  3. Sherry V. says:

I was able to get 15 blocks done this month. Mostly swap things, but I did use up some fabrics.

Looking forward to seeing what you have been working on behind the scenes.

  4. Barb B says:

    Ok, Shelly, here’s your challenge:
Clean off the cutting table by our Guild night OR sweep it all into a big bag and bring it to me!! I see some real beauties in that pile.

And I need proof you did it. Take pictures! (And sweeping it off onto the floor does NOT count.)

  5. Diana says:

I managed a whopping 24 blocks this month! 12 on one of those old undone kits I cut the other month. And then managed to get the July Kaffe mystery blocks before the end of July! Most of my time this month was spent putting blocks together into tops that people sent. So I did manage to get 4 small kid size quilts made and sent off to my friend who has a Quilted With Love chapter in North Carolina. And also got 2 of mine bound and ready to go when needed elsewhere. So while not a big productive month in making blocks, it was a productive month quilt wise!
I like the modern palette Shelly but love the calm one!!! Can’t wait to see what you have been doing!
Will see if I can update my blog. Typing has been a problem-thumb has been giving me a problem so have been trying to wear a brace.

  6. Wendy Tuma says:

Just 28 for me this month. I’ve been working on more UFOs and playing with my family. All good things, but shortens my block count!

  7. Clara Chandler says:

22 blocks for July, Shelly. I participated in my first block swap using a Pattern Basket design “Nesting”. Beware the very small pieces!! My other project was completion of the shop Mystery Quilt and it’s off to the longarm quilter now. I’m thinking that the Bright colorway might be my choice for the next Block of the Month. I participate by mail but hope to visit Sew Sweet Quilt shop when I visit my family in MO this fall.

  8. What with traveling and mostly suffering in the high heat, I have only 13 blocks for July. Hope to do better in August, but I”ll be traveling again soon.

  9. denniele says:

I was busy all month but the numbers do not show it! Add 17 blocks for me. One day the secret sewing will pop up again! 😉 My cutting table looks like yours……I get it mostly cleaned off and then something is piled there! HA HA In the middle of purging fabric……need to gain some control over the stash!

  10. Angela says:

As I suspected, I have not completed any blocks in July … I am still working on an applique` border. Hopefully, I will get back to sewing blocks this month. 🙂

  11. Rose Marie says:

I made 61 blocks this month. One of those blocks was a complete top. It was simple and so pretty. And it used up some of my stash stuff. My daughter-in-law loved it and so I am going to get it quilted and give to her to use for a little guy go to sleep quilt. When he is a big guy in a couple of years, we will retire it and make him something fishy, or racecars, or motorcyles, or deer. He is a typical boy!

  12. Karen Edwards says:

Do you think if you had a second cutting table, that would help? My sister says she wouldn’t put a flat surface anywhere in her house if she ever built a new one!

I made 86 blocks during July. The YTD count you have for me is accurate. Thanks.

  13. Barbara B says:

    35 blocks in July

  14. Maxine E says:

I made 35 blocks this month. So many projects on my to do list. I need to really get crackin’. It makes me tired just thinking about my list. Maybe I need to just put it away and out of sight.

  15. Only 10 blocks for me. Not enough I know but at least I have been at the sewing machine quilting projects. I have plenty of sewing to do so let’s hope I can blow this month’s total out of the water.

  16. Sandy Weber says:

    50 for me

  17. Amanda M. says:

I can only remember making 1 quilt block in July and that was to show some interested little girls how my sewing machine and chain piecing worked. I sure hope production picks up in August.

  18. Elaine says:

I made 42 blocks in July. Several are for a blue and green quilt I’ve started and then 5 bee blocks. I got 14 more blocks done for last years Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt “on Ringo Lake” ..really hope I can get it completed soon. My cutting table isn’t quite as bad as yours but my big board ironing table is horrendous. Someday maybe I can get both cleared at one time. Not holding my breath?.

  19. Danice says:

July really went by quickly. I did manage to complete 9 blocks.

  20. Marlene says:

0, that’s a first for me! I pieced an art quilt and finished and gifted an art quilt using a few blocks previously pieced, completed two QOV tops all w/blocks previously pieced, finished 20 small coin purses, and made a skirt and large carry-on tote for my daughter for her birthday. VERY busy month, just not piecing. That is about to change! The August agenda is all quilts.

  21. Beverly V. says:

Playing with grandchildren and campground hosting took over the month of July. No seeing machine. I have not done any hand stitching either. Maybe in August I can do some hand stitching, as still hosting. With all that said, once again 0 blocks done.

  22. Marsha Y. says:

July was a busy month trying to finish quilts for other people and myself, but now back to working on blocks for a wedding quilt. I got 24 blocks made in July. Will need to finish the rest of the blocks this week for this quilt as it needs to be finished and gifted on August 25th!!! I see lots of sewing time in the future. Good luck on clearing the clutter. I did that last month and it is already back to chaos.

  23. BettyK says:

I managed to complete 80 blocks for this hot month of July. I think I was catching up from a couple of sick months. I have been making military mug rugs for Christmas gifts for husbands PTSD group. Also have decided to make at least 2 to 3 cat mats to donate to local animal shelter.

  24. Hi Shelly! Please add 36 blocks to my total for July. Not as many as I’d hoped, but it will do. I have some projects for August that should help boost my count, so we’ll see how it goes. I love the colorways you’ve chosen for your BOM!

  25. Phillis Harding says:

I got 90 blocks done this month. Also managed to get 2 quilts machine quilted. While recovering from my eye surgeries I finished hand embroidering my Crabapple Hill Vintage Tins. I counted my UFOs and only have 38 left to finish. 33 of these just need to be quilted and 5 still need more blocks made to finish.
I love the shades of blue you have selected for your block of the month.
Thank you so much for the goody bag. I have just the right project for them.

  26. Wendy O says:

Is it REALLY August??!!!! What happened to July??
Ok, know what happened to part of July I sewed! Finished the quilt I have needed to work on for awhile. Tops is done after 40 blocks were set together!

Then I started another quilt. My reward for the finishing of the pervious UFOs. New top is nearly finished! A lot of blocks needing sashing on two sides…so, add another ….going to count and leave off the 12 done so far this month……37 but super easy so, another 16,
    July total of 56!
    And stitching for August!

Oh! The only part of my cutting table clear is the bottom 15 inches of an 24 x 18 mat!

  27. Stephanie says:

    52 blocks for me.
6 of block 1 for last years FQ shop quilt along, added the final pieces to 36 String-X completing those, and 10 blocks/filler sections for a well-aged BOM.

  28. KT says:

Just 20 blocks for me. Still working on the North Stars pattern and got 2 more of those blocks finished–including the otter block with almost 250 pieces in it!

  29. Cheryl says:

I did 210 blocks for July for YTD 905. I did my first Medallion quilt with Moda Camp Oda May Sew Along, that was fun. Also went to Winterset’s quilting museum, really enjoyed it. Thanks for telling us about it.

  30. Susan s. says:

64 pi wheel blocks I can report now that they are all done. Have been working on them for a few months but didn’t want to count them u til I was done. I also made a Kaffe quilt cleBlue Bricks and from the size can maybe be counted as 20 blocks. So i4 blocks in July. I am not sure how many I will get done in August as my 14 month old grandson is coming to visit.

  31. Patricia Hotz says:

we were traveling for July so I did zero sewing. now that I’m home I hope to make up for lost time.

  32. Mary D says:

Zero for me – I spent most of the month quilting my brains out so I would be all caught up before going on vacation. I was about half done with the last one when we left.

  33. Darlene says:

    Hi Shelly,
I have 16 blocksforJuly it has been a busy month. My sister purchased your new baby pattern can’t wait to see what she makes.
I am excited to see your new quilt blocks for the shop beatiful color pallets it is a really tough decision.
    Thanks Darlene

  34. Johnna Clarke says:

I have discovered mug rugs and have been busy making them for gifts and door prizes for an event. Not sure we can count those, but I made 14 in July. (I am excited that I can actually make and finish one in a day!) As far as blocks go, I have made 3 actual blocks for a presentation I’m doing in October. Still have quite a few to go for that.

  35. Becky says:

I had a total of 75 blocks for July. That life quilt I am working on. Blocks are 100×100 1/2 square triangles sewed into blocks. We also had two weddings in July. A grandson and a niece.

  36. Shirley Guier says:

Just got home from vacation and I can remember 36 blocks so I will use that number. I bought a chalk board to keep track of my blocks but that isn’t working out to good for me. I have to keep trying to keep better track of my blocks!

  37. Judy S. says:

No blocks completed for me this month. Summer is hard.
