July 350 Blocks Report

Posted on July 31, 2024 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

I keep saying that I’m gonna get back to my normal schedule soon, but it doesn’t appear to be happening as fast as I’d like. I did get my new studio set up enough to sew, and I’ve been working to get back on track with all the customer quilts I have piled up here!

I ended up with a total of 36 blocks for July, which was just over the goal, so I’m happy with that.

Two of the blocks were for my Made & Found quilt, a Facebook quilt-along that began a while back. I’m way behind, as I knew I would be, but still plugging along. The blocks are easy enough, I just haven’t devoted much time to it.

The other blocks I made were totally random and some aren’t even for real projects I have going on. I’m just sewing pieces together as I come across them, and stuffing blocks in the orphan bag. I guess it’s a way of cleaning up some stuff!

I’m back to leader-endering tiny HSTs. I found a bag already sewn that needed only to be trimmed and then made into the blocks, so I ended up with 11 more of these blocks made:

Ten of the blocks I made were for Veteran’s quilts, so you’ll eventually see those. I also needed to cover my new design wall, and it’s very large, so that was a project, but I got it done. It’s gonna be so nice. I’ll have to get something up on it and show you!

I also took the time to recover my ironing board as I set my ironing station back up. I found this canvas at Pieceworks Quilt Shop in Winterset, Iowa, when I was there back in May. The cover gets so nasty so fast, but I love this piece, so I hope it holds out for a good long while.

So that’s it for me. How did you do? It’s time to report in with your July totals. I hope you got a better start on the second half of the year than I did.

I have the Project Page updated. Our block goal for August is 31, which will bring us to 236 for the year so far.

The prize winner for June is Cathy W.

We’ve been having some more hot days, so if that keeps you inside sewing like me, I wish you a productive August! Kids will be back in school before we can blink — where does summer go so fast?

I love that fabric on your new ironing board cover. I’m going to replace mine this month. Well, zero blocks sewn in July. ‘Will be sewing some this month though.

    • Danice G says:

Correction: I had forgotten about the 4 blocks that I did make for a small quilt. Apologies for the mistake. So, that means that I did make 4 blocks in July.

  2. Patti says:

A big fat zero for me, my seeing machine was in for servicing for three weeks. Have several new projects cut out and others pinned, so completed two quilt tops once I received my machine back. Give Tucker a big hug for me.

  3. Diana S says:

Love your fabric for the ironing board. I see such pretty covers on blogs! I always say I will get one made but never do. I didn’t make the goal of 30 this month. But I did get the blocks from last month into quilts! Also got a queen size quilt bound. I spent time moving out fabric and kits I will never use or make. Part of my count this month is a Five at the Hive (BOM) from 2009! Between a table runner, placemats and a very old project my count is 25!

  4. Amanda says:

I made 4 blocks in July. I feel like I spent the month canning but it was really 5 busy days/nights. Here’s hoping that my sewing motivation comes home from wherever it took off to.

  5. Johnna Clarke says:

Just wanted to send you condolences on your dad’s passing. Quilting/card making is what got me through when Mom died. Hang in there.

  6. 125 blocks for me. That fabric makes a perfect cover!

  7. Karen E. says:

Try ironing freezer paper to your big board cover. It’ll keep it clean. I need to replace my cover too.
I made 82 blocks in July for a YTD total of 439.

  8. Paula M Mo says:

I managed 6 for July. Canvas for ironing board cover? That’s a new one for me. Also loving the leader/ender thing you do, will give that a shot for a few quilts tops that have basic 4 patch or HST. Not sure my brain can wrap around it, yet!

  9. Moira says:

I made lots of units for a certain mystery quilt but no blocks with those yet.

I did complete 4 blocks towards Bonnie Hunter’s latest leaders and enders quilt, County Clare, though so that’s my July total.

Hopefully there will be more progress next month but I doubt it as I’m custom quilting a *very* large appliqué quilt for a guild buddy. It has to be done by the end of this month for our show.

  10. Kathy Parks says:

I have to say July was a great month for me. I’m in a block swap that starts this month (August) and goes for 9 months. Each month I need to make 8 hourglass blocks to swap, well I sat on Friday afternoon and a Saturday and did all 72 blocks. I’m also working on a few BOM and was able to get caught up on those also for a whopping total this month of 95 blocks. This has been my best month so far!

  11. Ioleen says:

I made 29 blocks in July. I did take a few days off to visit my sister in another province.

  12. Fran says:

Love your ironing station cover! Only made 22 blocks. Hopefully, August will have a better number.

  13. Susanne P. says:

I love your ironing board cover! Excellent fabric choice!!! 😍 I’m glad you are getting back to quilting the mountain of customer quilts that have accumulated. That must be a good feeling to have your long arm machine set up in its new space and back in action. 🎉🎉🎉

I was very fortunate to go to two quilt retreats during July. Lots of sewing time for me. I didn’t finish any projects, just worked on different steps of several projects to move them along in the process. Since I was going on the retreats, I tried to cut out as much as possible so I could just sew, sew, sew! I made 188 blocks during the month, woo-hoo!

  14. Susan Siemens says:

I sure felt your post this month! I have been trying to get back into a regular sewing routine but as much as I hope, wish, and plan, it isnt happening. I did get a swim rashguard set made for my granddaughter, out of necessity more than anything. She and her younger brother came to stay for over 2 weeks. That explains the lack of blocks. I also did a bit of pattern testing and made 2 rompers/overalls for myself. so for July, a big fat zero. Winter is coming, there is hope

  15. Kind of a slow month as I have had two cataract surgeries in July. I did manage to get 15 blocks done however.

  16. Kerry says:

Epic fail here – a total of two. But on the plus side, it’s been so hot outside that I’ve managed to do some sewing because it is a lovely cool room, so lots of HSTs and still working on them.
Well done to those who managed to crack on and make lots!

  17. Wendy says:

You will love your big design wall! It’s been a total game changer for me. The fabric for your pressing table is so cool! Mine is getting ugly, so will need replacing soon. My block count for July – 29. Not much progress, but a little!

  18. Marsha P says:

no blocks for me this month

  19. Dianne from Alabama says:

Only four blocks for July. But lots of other projects in the works. I’ve been on a “binding binge” of late. So far this year, I’ve bound 44 quilts of valor plus a few others. It’s been hot as blazes here too so lots of staying inside and giving thanks for air conditioning!

  20. Diane O says:

I’m so happy that you are sewing in your new space!! I got 275 blocks done in July. Most of them were 4 patches, so really easy sewing. I finished the bird blocks for my friends quilt. Happy quilting!

  21. Debbi says:

I don’t know where July went! I only made 1 block and that was hand sewn. I spent a week in Oregon for the Sister’s quilt show. I have been in my sewing room enough but most of that time has been spent making backs for quilts and cutting quilt kits for the church group. I didn’t realize how little sewing I actually did, must correct that for August.

So glad to hear you are moved in your new sewing space and getting to work.

  22. Ginny says:

Still setting into our new to use house and empting out the one in TX. Good news is that it has a contract and financing approved. Closing is Aug 14. Hopefully soon i can get some piecing done.
    No blocks for July.

  23. Kelly Powers says:

Love the fabric of your ironing board cover!

July went much too quickly to sew very much but I did manage 12 blocks, all for charity quilts. Three were hand sewn Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks. It’s supposed to be VERY hot the next couple of weeks, so I am hoping to spend a lot of time in my cool sewing room.

  24. Rose P says:

91 blocks for me in July. I brought a laser cut kit in the motorhome for a 51-day trip. Where we are staying is quite warm (85+ degrees) which wouldn’t be bad if we could run the A/C. We share power with my sister and we have to take turns, if at all. Next week the highs are supposed to be in the 70’s, that will be great!!!

  25. Tanya says:

Your new ironing board cover is perfect. I find that if I put my small square wool ironing pad on top of my ironing board when I iron blocks it helps keep the ironing pad cleaner because when ironing several blocks you tend to iron in the same spot over and over. I just move the wool pad when I need to iron long strips. I was able to make 151 blocks this month. My summer is over since I am back at work this week. I am ready for some cooler weather!

  26. Louise says:

A big fat zero blocks again this month, but I quilted and bound two more twin size quilts.

  27. Sharon Gratz says:

49 July blocks for me, Shelly. Thanks for keeping me motivated.

  28. Beverly V. says:

Zero for me. Ended up leaving early for our stay at the lake. No room for sewing in trailer. I think I do have my sewing room back to being able to sew when I get back. Want to finish up several projects first. Hope to start some scrappy quilts after that, using up my scraps. Too much material for so little room.

  29. Joan says:

Four blocks done & some hand quilting.

  30. KT says:

Hope you’ll give us a studio tour once you have it all set up–I love seeing the little glimpses that you’ve been giving us!
I made 16 blocks in July–not sure what I did with my time–guess I was too busy enjoying the summer and working!

  31. Ginabeth says:

I had 36 this month. Mainly because of leaders and enders. …but I have a good excuse… a friend and I went on a Country Heritage Quilt bus tour of Oregon and Sisters Outdoor Quilt show. It was fabulous and we had a wonderful time📍

  32. Linda Knight says:

I finally got to sew a little. I made 65 small blocks this month using only scraps that I had in the stash and put together a quilt top 80×92. I will have to buy batting and binding for it. Meanwhile I have started another small quilt top using bright scraps.

  33. Pam Desilets says:

For July I was able to complete 83 blocks and finish:
    3 table runners
    2 king size pillow shams
    7 pj bottoms shortened
    1 mug rug
    1 potholder
    4 sets of 4 placemats
It fells go good to finish thinking

  34. Wanda Marvel says:

0 blocks this month. Have a new knee now.

  35. Carissa says:

I don’t usually spent a lot of time sewing this time of year, but this summer has been an exception. I had quite a few projects to get done that had deadlines, so that was a big motivation. I sewed a total 119 blocks this month. I’m not sure that August will be that productive, but I hope that I can meet the monthly goal.

  36. Barbara B says:

I made 32 blocks in July.

  37. Deanna says:

When it’s too hot to do much else, a basement sewing room is an attractive option: 121 for July. It will slow down drastically as school starts soon, but I have surely enjoyed this sewing and service summer.

  38. July was surprisingly productive for me with 157 blocks made. We didn’t travel at all in July, and it was either too hot or too rainy to spend much time outdoors. I love the fabric for your ironing station!

  39. Angie in SoCal says:

You’ve been busy. Congrats! Me? Not so busy. Put me down for 24. I’ve been struggling with the heat. For the next few days it’s going to be 104-108 degrees around here. All I can do is sit in a chair near the AC and read or hand sew. Blessings!

  40. Mary D. says:

I have 24 for the month, mostly because I had a deadline quilt for my granddaughter’s birthday, which had 20 of them. So glad you have a sewing area set up. Enjoy your new home!

  41. Marlene Clausen says:

72 for July. That’s the QOV I had planned to do. I think I did some other stuff; but, some customer work plus dr’s appts and other stuff that I had to get done leading up to knee replacement surgery on the 12th helped me lose total track of what else I did.
I do like your ironing station top. I made one for my new ironing/basting station my daughter built as a Christmas present this past Christmas. Found a wonderful, cheery flamingo canvas. Mine usually need replacing at least every three years. Am hoping for a longer life for this one as it is primarily being used for pressing yardage, backing, and quilt tops. Still use my regular board to press blocks as I sew.

  42. Beverly Hovis says:

I got 18 done and now to put into a quilt.
    More embroidered blocks.

Hope you move is going ok! A big job.

  43. Kathi Benchley says:

I completed 17 blocks in July.

  44. Paula Mu says:

I did pretty well this month with a total of 64. My walking trails quilt resulted in 48 blocks and the rest were from 4 other projects.

  45. Bev C. says:

    I did 176 blocks in
Hope July. Working to use up my strings. I now have made enough blocks of different kinds in the last few months to make 7 string quilts. I have 2 done so far and 4 tops made and one set of blocks put aside for a UFO challenge that my quilt chapter does.
Funny thing, I just made a new ironing board cover, also. I have been using a heavy cotton fabric that was gifted to me. Used the last that I had. Great idea to use canvas. May give that a try next time.
Hope your move and organizing everything is going well.

  46. Stephanie says:

I did blocks for two different quilts, 48 for one of them, and 15 towards another.
Love your new ironing board cover. I really need to do a new one too.

  47. I had 52 blocks made in July. I’m amazed it was that many. It was a busy month. I know August will be few because of a family vacation. But, I’ll be OK for the year.

  48. Randy Menninghaus says:

I made 246 blocks. I am experiencing 1/2 triangle fever… and wonky stars.(separate quilts) It is crazy. Just when I think I’ve gotten the “bee out of my bonnet” I come up with a different lay out or alternating block…

  49. Sandy Hughes says:

July was a bust for making blocks! I made ZERO and not sure I’ll get any made in August. Here’s hoping for better days!

  50. Ceil Podzimek says:

I finished just 10 blocks for July, for my virtual group’s sew along of Tula Pink’s 100 blocks. I was finishing other projects and quilted 2 flannel quilts to go to my brother, John and sister-in-law, Helen. Hopefully I’ll have more for August.

  51. cathy k says:

I got 56 blocks blocks finished in July.
