January Studio Organizing, Task One

Posted on January 10, 2022 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Here we are, ready to kick off a year of Studio Organizing Challenges yet again — this is my 8th year of offering up these challenges! Where does the time go? And how, after 7 years, am I still not organized? Haha!

I can tell you why:

It’s because organizing is pretty much never done (like housecleaning or laundry). Things keep coming into our houses and studios, and things keep needing to go out of our houses and studios.

The real trick is to put systems in place to deal with it all, and that’s mostly what I’ve been striving toward over the last couple of years.

Last year, I set up a system for keeping my cutting table cleared off, and it’s working very well. I hope to improve upon it some more this year.

Last March, I implemented a new scrap storage system, and it’s wonderful.

Over the last few months, I’ve been working on a new paper system, and I hope to finish getting it set up and in use this year (soon).

And I continue to get rid of stuff I no longer need or want or use.

But, I still have to work those systems to keep everything under control, and there are more areas I need to work on, so of course, I’m continuing with the challenges this year!

We’re gonna kick things off with a declutter challenge:

Get rid of at least one thing a day

This doesn’t have to be for an entire month. You can just work this until the next challenge comes out on the 25th, so basically, two weeks of getting rid of at least one thing a day that you no longer want, need, or use. You might find that you can do more, and that will be even better.

You may also realize that as you get things more and more organized, it gets harder and harder to find things that you need to get rid of, but surely we can all find at least 14 things, right?

So that’s our task. Have fun!

PS: If you really need more serious help getting things organized, you can sign up with Kim over at Feel Good Fibers for Declutter With Us coaching. She walks you through the process and deals with all the underlying issues at the same time, so that you can do it for the long term. Go check it out HERE. Whether you sign up for the coaching or not, at least sign up for their blog, because Kim and Tom hand out all sorts of wonderful advice on the topic that really comes in handy, plus lots of little mini-challenges along the way. It’s fun!

I am so glad you’re doing these challenges again! Thank you! Having a system of keeping things tidy and tossing regularly, really is key. Like you, I’m gradually finding ways of doing that, but I still have lots to deal with. This should help. Thanks.

I can find 14 more things – I finally sorted that last tub of scraps! I really hope to make it easier to cut fabric and put the odds in their color spots. Reworking my layout as far as where I cut and iron. We will see! Thank you Shelly!

  6. I love these challenges. I think I have more than one going this year. Sometimes it is easier to have ideas of what to do.
    I blogged about it. https://melsquiltingblog.blogspot.com/2022/01/prairie-moon-decluttering-challenge.html
I tossed more than 14 items this morning.
Now to toss something every day.

Organizing is like laundry or farmyard poop. Just when you think you’re done you turn around and there’s another pile. 🤨

  8. Coralie Wallace says:

Decluttering is very much needed. I have been working on it and there is much more to do. Thanks for giving us some steps to push us forward.

  9. Diane says:

Fourteen things. I think I can (I KNOW I CAN).
Thirty things, maybe. Let’s give this a go!

I have always liked this one as I cleaned out the closet the other day and taking it uptown to the thrift store tomorrow after work…….

but Thursday, Friday and Saturday I have all three days off so I will have more stuff to take uptown and or throw away give away…..

but thanks for keeping this one on the top of the list…..

    happy quilting everyone

This is something I really need to do and have promised myself to start today!

  14. OMG! This will be interesting! A few years ago we moved from a 3600 sq ft home to a 650 sq ft apartment. I did a major downsize during the move and have steadily been downsizing/clearing out ever since. Can I find 14 things to get rid of? Yes! I have 2- 3 drawer units that need to be cleaned out (my office supplies of pens that are probably dry, a stapler or two,….) you get the idea. I’m hoping to clean out/get rid of enough “stuff” that I can use one of the units for my batik stash and scraps. 😄

  15. I’m on it. Started on the 10th. Primarily working in the sewing room but I’m sure it will spill over to other rooms.
I expect you blogged about how you’re keeping your cutting table clear…do you have a link for tht? Thx!

I have been on this project all of 2021 and won’t stop. 2022 may have a few details. 2021 started because I feared I might have to move within a year and then there was a flood in the basement storage area. This did not help much with quilting. But it did cause me to keep on packing a lot of stuff out of here. The quilting goals were community service quilts made from scrap fabrics. I did more than 20 in 2021. Onward now in 2022. It is hard to tell that it is dumbing down when you keep making blocks…………and sewing them together. LOL
