January Studio Organizing, Task One

Posted on January 10, 2025 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Didn’t we just organize a bunch of stuff??

But here it is already time to begin our annual slate of Studio Organizing Challenges!

Since we just did The Final Countdown, and I’m still not quite done with one of those tasks, I’m taking it easy on us this time, and choosing something that might help me finish that up . . .

Put away stray fabric

If you have any piles of fabric laying around that you aren’t intending to do anything with right now, put them away. It’s OK to go ahead and earmark them for a project, but if you’re not working on that project anytime soon, get that pile organized and put away until you’re ready.

If you have any piles of fabric left over from projects that you just finished, now’s the time to mainstream it back into your stash. Clear your area to make way for the stuff you are currently working on!

I emptied another tub of fabric yesterday and got it put away, but I found a couple more boxes of random stuff I moved over earlier, so I’m gonna try and get those put away, too. That will also serve the secondary purpose of getting some more things up and off of my floor!

And if you don’t need to do this task, that’s great! I hope you get to spend that time actually working on a real project! I’m gonna try to sneak some of that in, too.

I just finished a project and need to put those bits away. But what I really need to do is figure out where my 6 inch ruler is hiding. I miss it! I’m thinking it’s inside something I put away!

it seems that you pick a task that I have finished or am working on. yesterday I took the 3 totes of scraps and got them all laid out and will be cutting them in to straps or squares so that I can make scrap quilts this weekend or as many as I can. there is always something to do in the studio. time for some lunch and the. back to work.

    happy quilting everyone

I thought for the last task, I would fix my long time gone quilt-having exhausted my self with unpicking seams, I decided to work on the words part of my son in law’s quilt…thanks for the break, boy do I have piles to put away! Not ready to tackle my sisters pile of fabric/clothes…that one will remain for a while!

I’m working on a finish kit for last years BOM from my LQS. Then I can put all the extra fabric away. (Course I have others in to to put away too)

  5. Randy Menninghaus says:

I thought I was so clever that I made nice stacks of the various fabrics…exactly where I found them. Some of this fabric keeps moving from stack to stack. these are neat stacks, like some one else made them.
    Stay warm…
    Off to put fabric away.

This task is something I have been already working on. For the past couple months, I try to put away the fabric I have used for the project I have been working on. I find the few minutes I spend cleaning up saves me from a big messy build up.

  7. I just finished going through piles of fabric and retreat kits I had ready. Sorted the kits, labeled, and put in containers for whichever retreat or sew day I plan to use them. Feel much better organized and ready for the planned events this year.

I have a fair few neutrals to go away, I’d been ironing them and folding them ready to go. Plus I have a pile that I’ve finished with and they are ready to go back too. Seems my scraps are getting awfully full now!

This assignment is funny to me today. During the final countdown I pulled a stack of leftovers from finished projects with the intentions of doing just this with them. Today I went to the studio and for some reason wanted to work on 3 projects at the same time. That stack of fabric was on the end of my ironing table. I picked them up and put them right back where they were last week. Guess I’ll actually take care of it now.

I moved a box of fabric into the empty shelves moved to my apartment. Been in that box for 8 months while I was recovering. I am not sure how great a quilter I can be now.

  11. Cindy Wienstroer says:

I do need to put away some scraps & re-organize my ‘kits/projects’ to take stock of what i have & want to work on. And keep working on memory quilts – 2nd top almost done so 3 to go.

Definitely a task I need to do. I have a pile of fabric in the corner that needs to be put away. It keeps growing! I have my design walls (foam insulation boards wrapped in fleece) in front of my fabric shelves with my current project on it. Should be able to finish that up tomorrow and then get that fabric put away and reclaim some floor!

  13. Joan says:

Just started a notebook, where I can track my progress on organizing. This current task is a challenging one–so hopefully the notebook will keep me working on this at least once every day. Thanks for keeping us motivated.

  14. Linda Knight says:

Since my quilt room was the place all small furniture was moved to in order to install new flooring in the apartment, I still haven’t got all that out of the way yet. Waiting for the quarter round to be put down first. I do have all my stacks put away and am working on another small scrap quilt.

  15. Kelly Powers says:

This is going to take awhile. I found the floor of the sewing room, for a few days. Now I am in the last stages of finishing costumes for a school play, so not only do I have quilting piles of fabric to return to their homes, I have major messy piles of costume fabric thrown all over.

  16. Moira says:

No stray fabric currently in my house since it all is still in boxes and totes after just moving into the house I inherited last year. What I have managed to do is to put away all of my quilt rulers for the first time in years. I bought a 46″ rolling tool chest w/ butcher block top as a belated Christmas gift from my dad. It will be my new cutting table and I’m looking forward to using it.

  17. Danice G says:

I am still working on storing scrap fabrics. As difficult as most of us know the task can be, it is not easy to throw away very small scraps of fabric. So, many of those are getting stored away in case of need. We actually do need all scraps, right?
