January 350 Blocks Report

Posted on January 31, 2020 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

January is always the easy month. Since we don’t really get the Project officially kicked off until mid-month, we can sort of just ease into the block making every year, and I sure needed that this year. And our goal was only 15 blocks.

And guess what? I still didn’t make the goal!

If not for practicing ahead of time to see how my trackers will go next month, I wouldn’t even have gotten as much done as I did!

I made 12 blocks this past month. Nine of them were for a commission quilt I can’t show you just yet, and I made 3 of these:

If you missed my earlier post about these Snowball blocks, you can read it and get all the details HERE.

And instead of counting each Snowball as an individual block, I’m counting each set of four as one block. They’re so easy, it just feels like cheating if I count them individually, altho if you choose to count yours that way, it’s perfectly fine. We’re on the honor system for this Project!

How did you do in January? It’s time to report in with your totals. If you don’t see your name on the list just yet, give me time — I’m a bit late getting the Project page updated, but computer time has been brief because of my current deadlines. Three more rush quilts to go, then I can get back to my normal schedule (she says, while not really believing it her ownself).

I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on, so leave a comment with your numbers (or contact me), and I’ll try to get the page updated over the weekend.

Our new block goal for February is 29 blocks, since I’m going with the block-a-day theme this year. That means we need to have a total of 44 by month’s end.

(And for those of you waiting on prizes  . . . no, I haven’t sent them out yet, because . . . deadlines! I’m hoping to do some catching up over the next few days. Thanks for being patient with me.)

If you’re on the fence about joining in, it’s not too late. You can join in anytime throughout the year. Get all the details HERE.

We have an extra day in February to get more done, and my own personal 2020 is starting over tomorrow, so I hope to be way more productive. Here’s to all of us having a productive February! Happy Stitching!

HI Shelly, that’s still a great tally since the start of the year can be very muddly 🙂 I’ve done a count up and completed 21 blocks for January!! (Latest blogpost if you want accountability!!) Hmmm 29 for February – that will be fun.

  2. Louise says:

January was a great month for sewing!!!!!! I quilted and bound five quilts and made 219 blocks. Most of them were for those five quilts, but some remain as just blocks still.

  3. Paula M says:

My count is 1! I have spent Jan. cleaning and sorting. Also, coming to terms I am over extended! Admitting is the first step, right?

    • It must be our name. I am a Paula also and could have written what you wrote! And February looks even more over extended, altho I did decide to start a new business venture in March rather than February. February is always a busy month as families race each other to sign up their girls for the Girl Scout week long volunteer camp the first week in August. It gets crazier every year and I am the registrar/treasurer for the camp! I love every minute of it, but wonder what ever made me think I could take on anything more like teaching during the month of February?

  4. Maxine E says:

I made a total of 8 blocks. I joined an EPP sew along. It’s been so long since I have done any EPP! But I find it very relaxing. But I am going to start on a wedding quilt next month. Hoping I have more numbers to share at the end of February!

  5. Shirley Guier says:

I finished a Judy neimeyer quilt that isn’t done in blocks but I will count it at 40. I figured I had 10 days of piecing on that quilt. Then I made 20 swans, 4 birds and 2 log cabins. That’s 66 blocks.

  6. Pam Desilets says:

I only got 16 blocks for January.
Sure hope February is a better month.

  7. Dortha says:

I have made 55 blocks this month. More than I thought.

  8. Susan says:

And here I thought rushed WAS your normal! LOL In spite of a terrible last week of the month, I have a lot of blocks, but 64 of them were huge HSTs for an American Hero quilt. I counted them, because otherwise, the entire quilt counts as one block, since it is ALL made of HST. My total is 81. I’m sure I will have some low, low months to balance this!

  9. Christi Bentley says:

I made my personal OMG (one monthly goal) of getting all the blocks for my Farm Girl Vintage quilt made!!! I also finished the churn dash blocks I was using as leader/enders and got them sewn together in a flimsy just waiting for a pieced border. I made Delilah the Goat – she didn’t count for too many blocks, but is stinkin’ cute! I made my contribution of blocks for my group’s QOV quilt, and I started Winterlude (calendar quilt for January) which had 6 very labor intensive blocks. This all totaled 116!!! Of course, I will be sewing this evening while I listen to my nephews’ basketball game on the radio, so will probably get more done, but I’m just going to pretend it’s already February for those!

  10. Wendy says:

Well, I surprised myself when I went back to count. I haven’t felt like I got much done this month, but I had forgotten about the snowstorms. I have 55 for January. Woohoo! Some came in right under the wire though!

  11. Crystal F says:

35 Quilt of Valor blocks for me. Lots of red, white, and blue.

  12. Marianne says:

46 blocks this month. I am aiming for 350 or 366 fir the year. I will be gone a week in February and a week in March to major quilt shows so I tried to get a little ahead

  13. Angela Neese says:

80 blocks done – on that (blankety-blank) Snail Trail quilt – each 7″ block with 16 tiny pieces… remind me never to do that again. Plus triple border and putting it all together – but I don’t suppose that counts for anything? OK – that’s enough whining for one day, and it’s what I get for allowing a 16 year old to choose the quilt pattern she wanted. What was I thinking??

  14. Angie in SoCal says:

I’m testing a pattern that’s taking some blocks – phew. Then I made a baby quilt top with 49 blocks (never again!). So put me down for 97 blocks. Most ever.

  15. Kerry says:

Well I have 290 days to make a quilt for my daughter’s wedding. So I have made 32 parts of Arkansas Crossroads sections and 11 x 16 square patches. I’ve completed 3 big blocks altogether with 12 of the crosses completed. I think they look like kisses! Meanwhile I’ve stopped because I was having to frog a few seams, so I must be tired! LOL!
So I guess the completed kisses = one block. In that case it would be 23 blocks done in all so far.
Also an Ohio star and flying geese strips either side for a laptop cover, so 3 blocks there.

  16. Carolyn S says:

I finally got back into some quilting. Made 72 flying geese for a mystery quilting and 18 pinwheels but I think they are both parts of a larger block, so I guess 0 for Jan

  17. dianne says:

I’m still finishing ’19 projects (never taking on that many in one year again!) Almost caught up – I made 73 that I’m counting – actually 115 but simpler pieces. This is a great idea keeping a record of progress- thank you!

  18. Sue Norfleet says:

20 blocks of Traffic Jam, a 2 1/2 inch square scrap buster by Pat Sloan; 4 heart blocks for a front door hanger; 11 finished blocks for Bonnie Hunter’s recent Frolic mystery quilt; 2 other sew along blocks; and 14 large mug rugs for Valentine gifts. That totals 51. Was more productive than I realized til I added it up.

  19. Shirley B says:

I finished 61 blocks this month.

  20. Karen E. says:

I made an even 100 blocks this month. Happy 2020 to everyone!

  21. KT says:

I made 18 blocks in January–not as much time, and I was working on finishing up some things–got one quilt top finished, and started quilting a wallhanging, but I’m waiting for inspiration to finish it.

  22. Peggy says:

I pieced 656 HSTs and 328 flying geese to complete 28 blocks also containing a pinwheel, 4 more pinwheels and 8 sawtooth borders fir the Frolic Mystery Quilt #frolicquilt with Bonnie Hunter @quiltvillebonnie . My count for January is 40 blocks.

  23. I pieced 83 blocks in January 2020.

  24. Amanda M. says:

I created 108 blocks for 6 projects, I think. Had I had been more motivated to sew some days instead of cooking so much I wouldn’t be packing the extra 10 lbs and had more projects closer to done. I’m going to be glad to get the ice off of my paths and to quit walking around like a penguin. I think that I am going to start my 2020 tomorrow also.

  25. Rose Marie Smith says:

I’m starting this year right. Lots of blocks this month.
213 plus 2 pillowcases……..okay you don’t have to count those!! 175 of those blocks are snowballs. That quilt is all finished so next month will not have such a big total.

  26. Julie M. says:

Where did January go? I did manage to get 23 blocks done. 16 are for a baby quilt. Plugging along on the Frolic Mystery Quilt.

  27. Barb Roberts says:

A busy January for me. 148 blocks in a drunkard’s path quilt, 25 12 inch sampler blocks, a one block mini quilt and 24 blocks for a Linus quilt. My math says that is a total of 198 for January. Thanks!

  28. I don’t count my blocks until I’ve finished a project, and I finished a big project and a few smaller ones this month. I have 70 blocks done for January. Lots of those were smaller ones. 🙂

  29. Janet D says:

I laughed when I saw the count was 15 for the month since I finished 16. It’s probably the first time I’ve made it for the month.

  30. Elle says:

187 blocks! 3 quilted, waiting for binding.

  31. Beverly says:

62 blocks for me. It is part of the organization plan. As I am cleaning and find blocks cut out put them together. Also worked on a charity quilt. Was hoping to finish it but did not get it done. In February maybe. It worked well this month until this past week.

  32. Sharon Gratz says:

Only 21 blocks for me this month.

  33. Cathy Wight says:

I had a great start this month (sure I’ll need the head start. LOL). I made 80 blocks this month for an opportunity quilt top I finished for a reunion this year.

  34. Sue Norfleet says:

Managed to get 51 blocks finished in January.

  35. Debbi says:

I was sewing strong at the beginning of the month on the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt…didn’t make it to the block building before left for CA. I have lots of parts made and will get back to it next month. On the road I did do a little hand sewing tho…I made 2 grandmother flower garden blocks, 2 basket blocks and 1 halo block Makes my total 5 for the month, and I’ll take it!

  36. Cynthia says:

I got 87 blocks done this month, only because I set myself a hard deadline of the 15th January, as the second half of the month was a big fat zero due to our summer holiday trip. I did think that’s what was going to happen.

  37. Stephanie says:

January was a wonderful month for sewing chez moi.
17 huge 9 patches to cut up for D9P
2 sets of 24 Heartstring blocks (and finished the quilts)
12 St Louis 16 patches (and finished the quilt)
Made a 75 inch column to finish out a quilt top = 3 blocks
Lastly 2 big Friendship Stars to round out a set of swaps (and assembled the top).
Sadly real life and its obligations starts again soon, but not till after a 4 day piecing retreat next week.

  38. Betty K says:

I completed 29 blocks for January. I finished cat rugs and mug rugs. Also, working on a small quilt. I was sick (thank goodness just bad cold and not the flu) so was out for a little more than a week.

  39. Angela says:

For January I have a big fat zero for number of blocks completed.
I decided it was finally time to hand quilt my Vintage Valentine appliquéd quilt top (that has been on my “to be quilted” pile for ten years). I’m happy to report that I’m nearly finished quilting this quilt and will be getting back to piecing quilt blocks.
Hope you had a very happy birthday (in three weeks we will be the same age)!

  40. Fran Courson says:

January was a quilting month for me. With making 4 quilt tops and several blocks of the week and of the month I was able to complete 93 blocks. I love your form for keeping track of our blocks!

  41. Michele says:

I finished 54 blocks in February. Most were simple blocks (42 mini snowballs) but a few were hella complicated (looking at you, cardinal block).

  42. Judy Sovereign says:

Got lots done this month . Made 80 log cabin and 4 epp blocks and 91 blocks for beaded lanterns. Have to get cutting and get some quilting done. Off to sew

  43. A whooping 36 blocks for me. All of them made from scraps that I picked up off the floor near the sewing machine! Starting to make a path and there really is floor in there.

  44. Clara Chandler says:

I’m off to a good start for 2020–27 blocks made. One quilt top is nearing a finish and another is in the sashing stage. Once again, my LQS is holding a mystery quilt project and I make the blocks for showing each month. This year the blocks are large; however, I’ve had to learn half square rectangle construction and making them into a square.

  45. Joan says:

65 blocks this month. Started the 365 Day Quilt challenge–was fun at first, but now I’m wondering what I have set myself up for!!!
Also am making blocks for a scrap quilt, which has very small pieces. It’s allowing me to use up some of those fabrics that have been loitering around for way too long.

  46. Diana S says:

I made more than I should have! Was supposed to be working on UFO’s! But as I was sorting through my too much quilt stuff kept finding things that said start on me! So I did start on a few more projects. My one friend says squirrel moments, I prefer butterfly as I flit from one to another! But both are me!!!! So 76 is my total for Jan. 12 for one new project and 64 for another.

  47. I made 21 blocks in January. I have four more blocks nearly finished, just ran out of time, but those will get me off to a good start for Feb.

  48. Marsha Y. says:

I made 58 blocks this month. I feel like I am off to a better start than 2019, so hope I can manage to achieve my goals this year. Will have to stop on blocks for now and finish a couple of quilts for Project Linus.

  49. Judy S. says:

I’m starting out the year with a bang. I made all of the 184 blocks for Trail Mix and 3 Dear Jane blocks for a total of 187.

  50. Marsha P says:

    13 blocks for me

  51. I just did my total for the month and I’m flabbergasted! 196 blocks
    Glacier Ice: 96
    Bag & Notebook: 3
    Mosaic Mystery: 47
    Trinkets: 24
    Revolution: 20
    Tree Blocks: 6
Good thing I had such a good month to start the year. February has me with 2 surgeries and 3 follow up doctors appointments for each. In between I’m committed to quilting some of these tops I’ve made.
    😁 Carol

  52. Paula Mullet says:

Wow! I can’t believe January is over. I had 53 this month.

  53. Debi Neddo Franklin says:

I’m getting a good strong start for January. 45 blocks. Add in the binding of 3 quilts that I did on the long arm, and I guess it shows I’ve been busy. I like busy. Sewing busy makes me happy.

  54. Donita Moore says:

I completed 48 blocks. I’m working on string blocks for a quilt. I also made 10 blocks for a QOV group. I’m recovering from a fractured leg so just feels good to get back to my machine. When I’m released to drive I won’t be stuck at home and can go back to work so my numbers will drop. Will keep at things while I have the extra time.

  55. Danice says:

I did not make the goal, just shy with 12 blocks.

  56. Sherry says:

A total of 88 blocks for me this month. A applique quilt, leader enders finally coming together, Quilt of Valor. Christmas applique blocks, a few Farmers Wife blocks. I love January!

  57. Marlene Clausen says:

118 for the month. Good thing as major construction/renovaton coming to my house in the spring and don’t foresee anything new and will be lucky to be able to just get quilting done on a stack of tops while that is going on. The next couple months will be devoted to packing up almost all sewing stuff and getting it upstairs and away from the plaster dust and saw dust that will take over downstairs.

  58. Marcia in TX says:

I have only 1 for January. The month was taken up with quilting and cutting, and procrastination. Hopefully, February will be better.

  59. Christopher Thomas says:

This has been one heck of a month.

My mother was in the hospital again for a week, and had a lot going on with her. The plus side is that I can get a lot of blocks and other things made as I am trying to keep an eye on her.

This was a good sewing and making things month for me.

I was able to get a total of 430 blocks done for January.

99 Rope dog toys to take to my booth uptown
88 dog bone toys also for my booth uptown
192 makeup rounds for my sister,
all the above items are for renew, reuse and make new

Since the new year started over a couple of days ago for me I am in hopes to work on a lot of different things and get even more done.

I have 3 totes of stuff priced and ready to go uptown this afternoon once they are open

I started yesterday working on hand work and my goal is to set at least 1 hour each day and work on hand towels so I can give away as gifts this coming Christmas

Here is to the new year for each and everyone of us happy anything that you do

  60. Suelynn Williams says:

I thought I’d have more! An old UFO was my project for January, and I quickly realized why it had been set aside years ago. This year, a wonderful quilter looked over my shoulder and offered some helpful tips. Hooray! My total for the month of January is 21.

  61. I had 222 for January.

  62. Cathy Garrels says:

I got off to a great start in January with a total of 66 blocks. It already looks like February isn’t going to have a lot of free time for sewing.

  63. Deanna says:

January was unexpectedly productive for me: 49 blocks.

  64. Sherry Vlcej says:

Shelly, any forward progress is great progress. And I tell myself that a lot.

But I am over the moon to report that I completed 84 blocks in January! Yep, 84 blocks.

I don’t quite believe it myself. . . .but doing a pattern test (which I can’t show yet) certainly help push my block total.

The other blocks that I have done are scrappy blocks that will just be stockpiled until I have enough to make a quilt.

I have not started the Snowball blocks yet. . . .but they are on my “to do” list. . . I just need to get a plan for how I want to do it.

    Have a lovely day.

  65. Emma says:

I exceeded the goal for this month! 29 blocks down: 18 were large half/quarter square triangles for a baby quilt I made and delivered in less than 2 weeks (I alternated them with leftover 9 patches I had laying around, nice and easy!) and 11 were leader/ender crumb blocks.

  66. Cheryl says:

Hi, the more it snowed the more I sewed(lol). This month I did 296 blocks, worked on 7 quilting projects and 3 of those I took to the quilter, 1 I quilted and finished.

  67. Barbara B says:

Slow month, I only completed 1 block.

  68. Joy Dabney says:

I got 10 blocks made for January.

  69. Cathy G. says:

I made 66 blocks for the month. It’s not looking like I will have as much time for sewing in February.

  70. Kathi B says:

I managed to get 4 blocks done. Spent more time playing on my new longarm, plus went on vacation for 10 days.

  71. Patty says:

I got 46 blocks done and in such a short time. I hope to keep up the momentum.

  72. Phillis Harding says:

I have started out very well for January by completing 4 UFOs, quilting one top and cutting up scraps. I had a grand total of 307 blocks this month. A laundry basket is sitting on the floor full of strings so that is going to be for no mojo sewing days. At least that way I will accomplish something. Hopefully I can keep this pace going until April, after that I will concentrate on quilting tops for a month or so. Found my triangle salad pieces and need to finish them also.

  73. Drue Turpin says:

I did pretty good for a weekend warrior. 10 Bonnie and Camille log cabin blocks; firefly, thistle, 2 foxes, bunny, and owl; French general, got 4 done; 3stars on FQS 19; block heads 3 got 2 of week one, 2 of week 2 and 1 of week 3. Seaglass month one 2 blocks done. Grand total is 30! Not too bad. I spent one weekend sewing bindings on for my mom. Then her foot pedal broke so she used mine. I spent that weekend doing appliqué.

  74. Pam Martin says:

15 blocks total for January. A baby quilt that I’m appliqueing on. I’m working on the components for the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt Frolic, but have not made the blocks yet. Going to a retreat this weekend and hope to get the blocks made.

  75. Debra Freese says:

    83 blocks for February!
This included An emergency quilt for a friend’s Mom. Also the Linus blanket day added a bunch of blocks.
