January 350 Blocks Report

Posted on January 31, 2023 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

I did better than I thought I would! I was on a serious finishing mission, so I didn’t think I was actually getting that many blocks made, but if you leader/ender blocks while you’re setting others together, they really do add up!

I ended up with 74 blocks to start off the year. Not as good as some of you, but pretty good for me!

Here’s a real-life example of how I use my tally sheet. I keep it taped to the door of my sewing room each month. You can find the link to download the free tally sheet PDF in THIS post, down towards the bottom.

I moved several projects a bit more forward, including Block 8 of my Daredevils quilt, which I should have had finished a long time ago. This block had me worried because I had seen others say it was hard to put together, but I had no trouble with it at all, and as Denniele said, it’s now behind me — I can move on!

I finished a couple more blocks of my Pineapple quilt, but somehow only managed a photo of one them:

How did YOU do?

It’s time to report in with your January totals. I’ll have the Project page updated shortly, so if you don’t see your name yet, give it a bit, and I’ll try to keep up. We have around 70 people signed up so far — if you want to play along, it’s never too late to jump in!

Our block goal for February is 25 blocks, not quite one a day, to bring us up to a year-to-date goal of 45 so far. No hill for a stepper, right? Remember, the goal is only a suggestion, for those who need something definite to work toward. I encourage you to do as many or as few as you feel like doing, or have the time for. This is never a race — it’s just for fun. Thank you all for joining in this year, and if you’re not signed up yet, let me know you want in, and you can play along, too!

I hope you all have a productive February!

I love your pineapple block! I was able to get 170 blocks made this month thanks to a summer quilt I am making for our bed. It’s Bonnie Hunter’s pattern Straits of Mackinac. I am calling mine Sand and Surf since I am using blues and beiges to remind me of the beach. Being off work for two weeks nursing a foot injury also helped my block count this month. Thank goodness I can sew with my left foot!!

  3. Ioleen says:

I only managed 24 blocks this month.

  4. Moira Ten-Hove says:

I completed my Chilhowie mystery and made the blocks for my etched diamond quilted coat:
Chilhowie: 12 blocks (I made the other 4 in December)
plus its 2 borders and sashing which I’m counting as 8 blocks.
the quilt coat – a Shannon Fraser design – has a total of 8 blocks.

    So 26 blocks for January

  5. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Not too bad for me – 130 total. Made a ‘Lotus’ quilt for my brother in law for his 75th birthday so most (90) for that. Rest were using up scraps. Pushing to quilt my tops not just piecing them. Cleaning my machine so i can quilt Bonnie Hunter’s Chilhowie mystery. 4 tops/projects done this month.

  6. denniele says:

43 blocks this month! Your Daredevil block looks terrific. I found it to be the most difficult…..and you breezed through it! Good on you!

  7. Wendy says:

Just 43 for me. I’ve been sewing quite a bit, but not making many blocks? Not sure how that’s working – LOL! Love that Daredevils block!

  8. Kathy Parks says:

You had a great month. I’m started January with a new project and I’m keeping up with it. I managed to complete 64 blocks this month. That’s an all time best for me.

  9. Louise says:

99 blocks for me this month. There won’t be any for February. We left the snowy north behind and are enjoying sunshine and the ocean. We also left my sewing machine behind.

  10. Ginny says:

53 blocks for Jan. Need to get going or i’ll never finish a project. 52 of the blocks need to be set in row and then the rows set together. Another set of blocks all set to sew.
Ice here today and not above freezing and starting to snow again. This is Texas so not normal here.
Your pineapple is great. I wana make one sometime. How is the ruler working for it?

  11. Rose P says:

75 blocks for me. Retirement is AWESOME!! I finished 2 quilt tops and finished the quilting and binding on 2 others. The most recent is in the washing machine right now.

  12. Becky Cogan says:

I’ve been sewing quite a bit but no blocks to report. When I get them put together I’ll tally them. Heading out for a retreat tomorrow. YIPPEE

I got 16 done! hopefully next month will be better.

  14. Susan says:

46 blocks! I’m excited to start out with a good month! Your Dare Devil looks so perfect, and the pineapple is delightful scrappiness. Thanks for the link to the tally sheet, and the new logo.

  15. Suelynn Williams says:

Please include me again this year! A little bit of sewing went a long way in January with 30 blocks completed, and gave me something to look forward to every day. I like your scrappy pineapple block, too! The other block looks quite challenging to me.

  16. Marsha P says:

40 blocks for me. I agree about getting a lot done with leaders and enders. I do that all the time along with chain piecing if I can.

  17. Dianne D says:

64 blocks for January. Pretty good start for me😁

  18. Sally H says:

131 blocks for January. 2 charity quilts finished plus a top for American Hero Quilts. And one lonely reindeer block.

  19. PAULA M MO says:

I have 36 blocks. Feeling like it is a good start to a new year. I made it through the month without making a fabric purchase, ok, a couple pdf’s patterns!

  20. Diana S says:

love your blocks Shelly. Only 6 to report but that’s a start. They are 6 blocks using 64 – 2 inch squares. (8 x 8) Been getting my rows done using leader and enders
Will keep that bin by the machine. Once I have more done will get back to making blocks. Still making dog scarves as well. I think my sewing mojo is back, now to find the time.

  21. Fran says:

I love both your blocks! Thanks for sharing them with us. In January, I made 92 blocks.

  22. Amanda M. says:

I made 260 blocks for 4 different projects this month. Luckily I found needed background fabric for blocks for a quilt that has a ton of blocks. I’ve always got leaders and enders going which is one project in my count. It will be interesting to see how February’s production turns out to be. What cute blocks you’ve made!!

  23. Linda Knight says:

I got more quilting time this month and made 85 blocks. I also quilted and bound 3 quilts.

  24. Karen E. says:

I made 88 blocks in January.

  25. Delana says:

Sign me up for 2023! I made 8 blocks this month.

  26. Marcia in TX says:

Wow, you’ve done so much. I have a zero this month. I did put the list up on the sewing room door after your tip. Hopefully that will remind me enough. Thank you.

  27. Debbi says:

Only 2 for me 😱 I made 18 inch blocks for pillow covers as a replacement Christmas gift for my sister. (The gift I got her didn’t fit and we couldn’t exchange it). I still have to get them quilted and assembled. I’m hoping that after I finish with last years sewing and get the mess cleaned up I made in my kitchen I might get some sew mojo back. Right now I’m just very good at avoiding my sewing room except for zoom sewing Saturdays.

  28. Bev C. says:

First I’m listing the blocks I made when dealing with my scraps. As they are going to be set aside and used in quilt blocks down the road they DO NOT COUNT. There were 80- 4 patches and 60- 9 patches. I made 35 blocks for a quilt and 9 for Charlotte Hawkes mystery quilt and 1 for Sherri McConnall’s BOM. I also did a quilt chapter challenge that included 240 9patches. I’m counting them as if 5 were in a block so that would be 60. So my total will be 105. Very productive month.

  29. Marilyn Holder says:

Total blocks: 0. I am quilting a quilt which has been talking to me for several months. I am continuing the log cabin……..strips cut but sewing is slower. End of the year obligations have kept me busy. Getting it together.

  30. KT says:

Love your daredevils block! I was also trying to finish things in January (though I only finished one small project!). I only finished 24 blocks–hopefully I will do better in February!

  31. Marlene Clausen says:

Total for January is 112. Finally had a chance to do a bit of piecing. Finished one quilt, it was on my UFO list to quilt and bind. Started on curtain making for most of the house and sorted and folded a couple tubs of fabric . . . that (seemingly) never-ending quest to organize my fabric inventory. February will start off with some piecing as Saturday (2/4) is Quilt of Valor National Sew Day. Need to precut everything over the next three days to be ready to stitch on Saturday.

  32. Carissa says:

Moving projects forward is always good, any way it needs to happen! I have a similar number of blocks finished blocks at 73 and am quite pleased with my progress this month. I hope you are too!

  33. Ceil Podzimek says:

I got 40 blocks for January – all of them for my sister Rose’s petunia quilt. I finally have all the blocks done and am in the process of putting them all together. So glad that part is over!
I love the blocks you completed. My textile group is starting a sew along with Jen Kingwell’s Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilt – I will be making it for my other sister, Terry.

  34. Sharon Gratz says:

Guess who was able to quilt up a storm in January? I made 131 blocks. This will not be the norm because the blocks need to be sewn together now. lol Happy happy……

  35. Susan S. says:

Thanks for doing this again! I made 21 pinwheel blocks. I am not sure what I am going to do with them, but half squares are one of my favourites so just started making those, just to get sewing, and voila 21 pinwheel blocks happened!

  36. Phillis Harding says:

Count me in for this year. Love your dare devil. I made a total of 421 blocks this month.

  37. Debbi says:

I only made 2 blocks for Jan. 😱. They were 18 inch blocks for pillow covers which I STILL have to quilt and put together. I’m hoping once I get caught up on last years sewing (the pillow covers are replacement gift for a Christmas present that didn’t fit), I will get some sew mojo back.

Love your blocks! That daredevil block certainly earns it name😊

  38. Ginabeth says:

Ok got my tally for January 2023
63 blocks a good start for the new year!
Thanks Shelly, I know this takes some time.

  39. Barb Roberts says:

I managed 171 tiny courthouse steps block. Woo Hoo! Thanks Shelly

  40. Just tallied my numbers. I have 62 blocks for January.

  41. Rose Marie Smith says:

OH MY. I am not going very fast so far this year. I have only finished 14 blocks. But more is on the way for February if all goes well

  42. Raewyn says:

Good on you with your block count! My tally was 34 which I was pleased with 🙂

  43. Darlene Yiznitsky says:

Count me in for this year! I have a count of 25 blocks for January. I have been working on “tell me a story” paper piecing blocks w/ fussy cut centers. Quite a few crumb 8” hexie blocks for another project we’re added to my stack.

  44. 47 for me. Respectable, but not good enough! Must. Make. More! :oD

  45. Danice says:

Your pineapple block is super colorful and pretty. Well, I completed only 1 block in January. Not too great. There will be many more to come.

  46. Paula Mu says:

I managed to make 38 blocks this month. I was finishing up some BOM projects from 2022, so I had 2 Spicy blocks, 1, Sherry Mc Connell block, and 22 Letters from Santa. In addition I made 8 Scrappy Spools blocks, 4 Riley Blake 2023Mystery blocks and 1 extra block for Riley Blake’s 2022 Mystery. I assembled some tops, too, so I feel pretty good about my accomplishments.

  47. I made 70 blocks in January.

  48. Kathi Benchley says:

3 blocks for me in January.

  49. Deanna says:

January was 190 blocks for me. I am certain that is my highest single month total ever. A sudden impulse scrap quilt turned into 144 blocks all on its own. The rest were miscellaneous results of leader-ender sewing while that quilt was center stage. February will be slower, I’m sure. I now have three quilts to assemble, and that will be my focus, with less time dedicated to piecing. Unless another sudden impulse hits, that is.

  50. celia says:

I made 98 blocks in January. Hopefully, this year I can stay on track. Thanks for the inspiration, Shelly

  51. Hey, we ended up with the same number of blocks for the month! 74 blocks made in January. I’ve started way too many new projects, but I also managed to finish a challenge quilt. Your scrappy pineapple block is fantastic!

  52. Barbara B says:

I completed 61 blocks in January

  53. Starting off the month with zero! It’s just how it is. No apologies, I’ll try to get back to work in February.

  54. Beverly V. says:

I did get some blocks made for a scrap quilt, cutting out of another quilt which has appliqué on it and the next part of the memory quilt planned. Not counting any blocks for now. I am going to count them when I finish the quilt top. Also working on a baby quilt which will be finished this month.

  55. Chris GG says:

I submitted my total too early when I 1st signed up and have made 23 more blocks for Jan. So my grand total is now 143 not 120. Thanks!

  56. Angie in SoCal says:

January was a blur, but I know I finished 2quilts, so let’s say 16 blocks. one of those was my leader and ender quilt for 2022. I even got it quilted and bound. Please add me to the list if I didn’t ask to join for 23. Congrats on your 74!

  57. Barb Magruder says:

I stitched up 44 blocks in January. Hoping for more in February! But on the flip side, I finished quilting and binding 2 quilts.

  58. Diane says:

72 for me. 51 were 9 Patch Blocks made with 2 1/2″ squares cut from shirts. Then there is my Cracker Block addiction. Only 21 of those this month.

  59. Clara says:

27 blocks to start the new year’s count.

  60. April Bond says:

    I’M IN!!!!!!!!!
I will count my blocks for January when I get home from work today and try to count up last years. LOL I have only been quilting for about 3 years now. I started when Covid happened, but it would be so awesome to know just how many blocks I have created. I have given away so many projects and quilts that I don’t think I could really get a very accurate number but I will definitely try! Between all the pics and all of the notes and all of the quilt stacks at home maybe I can get a good total.
I can say I have been a little better at organization and tracking my work for 2023 so I know I can get Jan and beyond that. I am sew excited and can’t wait to start tracking my totals with you all this is exciting thanks PrarieMoonQuiltCo for doing the 350 blocks project! I think its cute! I love your pineapple block too, it so very colorful!!

  61. What happened to January. I nearly forgot to share my January total. It was 26 blocks to start off the year.

  62. Brenda Hulsey says:

O just finished with 56 paper pieced blocks that seemed to take forever! Now on to something else! I’m so glad to have a challenge.

  63. cathy k says:

I have 74 blocks for my January count, not a bad start for the year.

  64. Connie S Wolfe says:

Posting my block count here for the first time. I completed 30 in January. Feels good to know that something was done during the dreary month.
    Connie W.

  65. Joan says:

106 blocks. Sorry this is late, as I was out of town, so just catching up on email.

  66. Brenda Hulsey says:

Not very productive in April. My sewing machine broke. I only got 34 blocks done this month.
