Full Disclosure

I’ve tried to write this post three times. I don’t like spreading bad news, and I really dislike when it appears that I’m looking for sympathy — I’m not!

But in the interest of keeping things real, I felt compelled to come clean.

So . . . last Thursday morning, bright and early, this happened:

Two days before, My Cowboy had snapped this photo of these three darling angels:

My beagles: Chopper, Casey, and Tracker

Thursday morning, Tracker, on the right, got the zoomies at chore time, as he often does. And if you watch THIS video, and pay close attention at 3:23, 4:01, and 5:34, you’ll get the gist of what happened to me.

And as I lay incapacitated on the ground, he kept leaping back and forth over me, while his compadre, Chopper (on the left), brought random pieces of trash over to my head, one by one, and chewed them beside my ear, while Casey howled from his tether because he was the only one I had managed to get hooked back up before the incident began. It was completely comical! And My Cowboy didn’t even see any of  it because he was down at the barn!

A set of beagles is usually quite entertaining, but this really takes the cake!

So My poor, poor Cowboy had to haul me off to the emergency room, and I now have my arm in a splint. Miraculously, nothing is broken! My wrist and hand are fine, my shoulder has a slight sprain, I gave myself whiplash, and my elbow is entirely messed up, but supposedly not broken. I go back on Thursday to see what happens next. Hopefully, I will get a smaller, more mobile, splint or brace, so that I can get back to work.

I’ve heard it said that an elbow is the most painful joint to injure, and I really wasn’t wanting to find that out for myself, but now I believe it. The pain has made me nauseous most days, and I’m a complete grouch, unfit to be around. But I guess I could say it’s like an unplanned vacation, and I was needing a break!

So, no sympathy required, and definitely no praise for how I’ve kept my sense of humor, because such has not been the case. I’ve had a few meltdowns, and I don’t know how My Cowboy is putting up with me. Just send some good juju that my Thursday appointment gives me the best possible news.

I’ve still been able to do a few things:
I’m slowly whipping down the binding on a quilt.
I’ve been able to feed some quilt pieces through my sewing machine.
I can still write and use my computer.
I can wash dishes, make coffee, do laundry, scoop litterboxes, and dress myself.

What I can’t do:
Use my rotary cutter.
Run the longarm.
Put my hair in a ponytail.
Cook!

What My Cowboy won’t allow me to do:
Walk the dogs!
Help with chores.
Drive.

By Day 2, my hand had swollen up really badly. On Day 4, My Cowboy made us frozen pizza. By Day 5, the swelling was going down. I said: “Look! My hand isn’t nearly as swollen today!”

He said: “It’s the pizza — it’s anti-inflammatory. I know I’m a lot less inflammatory when I get to have pizza!”

I’m so sorry this happened to you. Take care and don’t push it.

  2. Nancy Sinise says:

Oh my! Your pups probably thought you were playing. You know it’s always better to do less than you can and not try to rush to get back to doing everything. Maybe get a few of your wonderful ideas down on paper for when you’re better?

  3. Christi Bentley says:

Sending thoughts for a speedy recovery your way. I still have a nice scar on my knee caused from tripping gracefully over my puppy (I’m sure it was graceful!).

  4. Karen E. says:

I’m so glad nothing is broken, and so sorry this happened. I was in a wreck in the mid-80s and didn’t know to get rehab on my injured but not broken dominant elbow, and it complains every single day now. If rehab is even whispered, get it! I’m wishing you a few restful days and speedy healing. Hugs!

  5. Diane says:

Aw Crap! In my humble opinion this isn’t much of a vacation. It doesn’t sound like fun. Although those beagles…they are entertaining. Good JUJU going your way.

  6. Candy says:

Oh no. Don’t push it – let yourself heal. Take this as an enforced break.

  7. Kate says:

Understood. When I fell and broke my ankle I stupidly said oh well at least it’s only my ankle. Just be quiet and do what the doc tells you to. They know best and you’ll be you again.

  8. Randy Menninghaus says:

oh man if we can’t share the good with the bad, what is life? So sorry to read about it. Your cowboy is probably enjoying his break from healthy food. Lucky lucky it isn’t broken.. but hard not being able to do what you love. Thinking of you.

  9. Mary Kolb says:

Take care & time to heal properly. xx

  10. Marilyn Holder says:

So glad your Cowboy was there to take care of you. Do you really need to wash dishes?!!! Pizza, cereal, and take-out sound really good to me! Be thankful of the quilting things you can do and do NOT push it. Take advantage of this rest time because your healing will come faster than you think. So sorry you had to go through this experience.

  11. Debbi says:

Oh my! Glad to hear it’s not broken. Time for a rest. I broke my elbow two weeks before my retirement date…I didn’t go to the doctor until after I had worked my 12 hour shift and went to quilt retreat for the weekend. Best not to know sometimes 😁, I would have had to miss my retreat after I was splinted. Before I was able to pack my stuff and load my car, tables, machine and all. Being splinted made it hard to do much of anything.

    Heal fast!

  12. Susan Bell says:

So glad it isnt any worse. At least you gave me a moment of humor as I could picture your dogs loving all over you. Ive been there on the ground wondering what to do next. Hoping for good news at Drs and to be a bit more mobile.

  13. Joan Ferguson says:

Oh no…..a nightmare for every quilter with stuff to get done. Hope you heal very fast and you are back to quilting, putting your hair in a ponytail, and cooking soonest!

Oohyah! Like furry martial arts experts! I confess I laughed at the thought of the munching in your ear while you were down. Mummy playtime at our level – I shares foods with you! And then Mummy is a bouncy castle! I just wonder what delight would have befallen you had poor Casey been free!
You have a good cowboy, a gem – love the anti-inflammatory pizza – who knew! I do wish you a speedy recovery and hope that nothing broken on the Thursday findings. xxx

I am so, so sorry about your accident. Glad you didn’t break anything. Since I am still recovering from three accidents last month, one of which was a cracked rib, I can certainly sympathize with you. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery. Best wishes for your Thursday’s appointment.

  29. Well, getting hurt sucks, but Cowboy is priceless! Get better!

    To Cowboy,
Help her healthy diet – popcorn is a vegetable and high fiber; chocolate in any form is also a vegetable (cocoa bean), but best with or as ice cream to include dairy in the diet, top with a cherry and you have fruit, and if you think a grain is important put it in a cone. We are all counting on you to take good care of her!

  30. Hope says:

Oh my, take it easy!! Sit back and enjoy a vacation (I was going to say “enjoy your break, pun intended , but that’s a little harsh “). I think you should receive worker’s comp! Prayers for you. Hope

  31. Tonia says:

So much good advice!! Take care of yourself and know that we all love you. And that it will make for great storytelling some time in the future ..Prayers for a speedy recovery

So sorry to hear about your mishap. Cowgirls just take it in stride. We have a beagle named Annie which is very spoiled and loved. I guess this makes us beagle sisters. Hoping you have a speedy recovery.

  35. Christine says:

So sorry to hear of your mishap! Hope you have a good outcome tomorrow and you can have an easier to manage splint. It’s so frustrating to find what everyday essential things cannot be done one-handed. Wishing you speedy recovery, and may you be able to get your hair in a ponytail again very soon! And do all the quilting things too 🙂 x

  36. Paula Mu says:

I am so sorry you were hurt. Pets do have a way of getting in the way. I hope you get better quickly and I will be thinking of you tomorrow when you get checked again.

  37. Mary Redrick says:

So sorry, Shelley! Take care of yourself and healing will come faster.

  38. Ginabeth says:

Sorry about your accident!!! At least it was not winter and you were in the cold! Impressed with your cowboy taking over. And Pizza sounds good for what ails you! Take care and heal quickly ❤️

  39. Good thing your Beagles are adorable. LOL My Beagle, only one, was a tripping hazard waiting to happen. I can’t imagine three of those lovely puppies. Praying for the best outcome today.

  40. That’s awful! Very sorry. I had missed this post but Klonda told me about it Tuesday. Hope your appointment today goes very well and you’re soon on the road to an easier recovery.

  41. Marsha Y. says:

Praying you heal fast. I feel for you as I know you are always so busy and even though you deserve a brief vacation, this is not what you wanted. Keeping you in my prayers.

  42. I know you aren’t looking for sympathy, but poor you! I can really feel your pain after having had shoulder surgery and an arm immobilized for 6 weeks. Sounds like your cowboy and my DH are related! After a week of not being able to cook and being served frozen pizza 3 nights in a row (and might I just add burnt pizza) I was grumpy. DH said that if I behaved myself he would burn some chicken wings for me the next night because the carbon helped the body to heal! 🥴. Hope you heal quickly.
