February Studio Organizing, Task One

Posted on February 10, 2025 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Our last task was to clean off our main work surfaces, and altho I struggled to get this one done on time, I did manage to do it. Here’s the state of my cutting table this morning.

Two projects on top! Pay no never mind to the piles stacked in other places. But I did include a shot of my ironing station in this photo so you can see that I did not just relocate the piles to the ironing board (which has been known to happen in the past).

My friends, Krista and Carol, came down last Friday, and helped me do some organizing. I got rid of three boxes, got two tubs cleaned up and organized, and a comfort quilt is now half done, thanks to them! The best part? I can now walk all the way around my cutting table and work from either side — big goal accomplished!

But now on to another task . . .

I noticed last week that I was randomly picking up odd things and trying to find a place for them. So I decided for this task, I’d actually concentrate on that more, so our task this time is:

Put away ONE thing each day

Now, you can certainly do more than one thing, and I’m gonna try to do more than one thing a day (to hopefully vanquish at least one more pile), but if you just do one, that’s OK. It kind of has a snowball effect, and even if you only do one thing a day for a month, that’s 30 items no longer cluttering up your space because you’ve now either gotten rid of them or found a good space for them to live in your area.

Do you think you can find one thing a day to put away?

I’m gonna try and keep a count of how many things I can put away. It’ll be fun to see just how many things actually needed to find a place to go!

I need the new task so badly right now. I need to work on a set of commissioned quilts so it would be soooooo easy to ignore everything that needs to be put away, gone through, etc after my move. But if I break it down to putting at least one thing away each day, then I don’t have to feel guilty about working on the order either. My thing today – putting the towels that were in a tote away in the linen closet and sorting more out for donation.

Put away one thing a day! Now that I can do! And hopefully it will establish a new long term habit! Thanks Shelley!

Oh that’s a good one! I think I’ll just pop into the room and do something apart from shifting from one place to another!

I think I can do that! Been trying to put things away in other rooms too.

Well one thing led to another thing in another area of the house. Now I have a hallway shelf cleared off, a entry table filled with thrift store donations. Christmas other than the bare Christmas tree in the living room is put away. I will go back to my sewing area, and find another thing to put away. Such a good idea! Thank you!!

Everything that is useful in making the various projects I’m working on or ‘thinking’ about, have to be where I can see and reach them when seated, and that includes stacks of fabric that I have together for each project. A lot of little drawers in an organizer, a favorite coffee cup, and pint and jam jars, and big fancy pickle jars are fun things I like to use. I’ll look for things that are not in their usual place.

This is going to be a fun task! Thank you for challenging me and your cutting table looks wonderful. So much more fun cleaning with friends.

I have 3 items that make starting this challenge easy. Two rotating cutting mats and a cardboard box that need to go downstairs to the trash. I’ll have about 10 days out of the studio but when I return I will continue.

It’s funny how attacking a task like this leads to not just putting one thing away, but many!

A great one even I can do!
