February Featured Pattern

February’s featured pattern is “What the Hex?”

This pattern uses hexagons to teach you how to do set-in seams, so it’s a great one to learn on, and the possibilities for hexie arrangement are basically endless.

I designed this back when honeycombs were a thing from Moda. They’re no longer a thing from Moda these days, but the template is included in the pattern, so no worries. And rather than buying a pre-cut pack of hexies, you can cut them from your stash, which would actually be even better!

OK, now I want to go start another one, just so I can use up some more scraps and do another different arrangement of hexagons!

On one of my excursions with my bestie, Victoria, a few years ago, we visited an antique shop south of Cameron, Missouri, called The Enchanted Frog, and we both picked up lots of goodies. One of the goodies I acquired was this hexagon quilt top:

The hexagons in this top are not quite as large as the ones in the pattern above, but I love the scrappiness of it. This one is machine pieced as well. It needs a few repairs, and then I plan to quilt it.

If you want to use larger or smaller hexagons than the “What the Hex?” pattern contains, you can simply enlarge or reduce the template to the size you want. But if you prefer an acrylic template, Victoria has some for sale in her shop in both a 5″ and a 10″ size. And after you get them cut, the “What the Hex?” pattern can help you learn how to easily set them together.

OK, darn it, I’m off to dig out some scraps — I seriously need to start another one of these!

Meanwhile, you can snag the pattern in either the print or PDF version in my shop for the month of February for only $5!

And you can read the original post about this quilt HERE. It makes me a little sad, since Bonnie and Oscar are neither one with us any longer. But Chip the Wonder Horse is still hanging in there! In fact, this morning, he donned his winter coat, jumped in the trailer, and is off to the farrier to have a pedicure. I can hear PeeWee screaming from the pasture because he thinks he’s been abandoned by his best friend!

I really like that pattern with all the negative space…very modern take on hexies. I enjoyed reading the original post too with all the silly animal antics. What good memories to have.

Thanks, (sarcasm) you have just introduced another squirrel. I love this!!! And now I have purchased the pattern. I’m looking forward to using some stash.

  3. Love both of these! The first one is sort of zen and I love that relaxing shade of green. And what a lucky find in the antique! Have fun!

Love the hexi photo shoot with your animals. Christian still remembers how much he loved visiting you at the farm with your cats.

Started two hexi quilts in February while on vacation! Like the look of the bigger ones in rows as is on your quilt. Good use for scraps!
