February 350 Blocks Report

Posted on February 28, 2018 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

I know February is the shortest month, but it seemed even shorter than ever this year!

Tomorrow a new month starts, and I hope it goes better than February did. This morning, I put the icing on the cake by locking the only key to my truck IN my truck, winning the World’s Biggest Idiot award!

Thankfully, My Cowboy has plenty of friends in low places who helped him break into it and save me from myself. And thank goodness we live where no one could see him doing that!

I’ve decided to either take a nap this afternoon or immerse myself in a quilting project — maybe both!

I managed a bit more sewing in February than I did in January, but still, all I got done was 8 blocks of the Village quilt for the Sewing a Village sew-along:

How did you do in February? You all sure did great in January — we’re off to a wonderful start!

It’s time to report in with your new totals for this past month. I can pretty much guess that you all did better than I did!

The prize winner for January is Marlene!

I’ve got the Project Page updated, and our blockmaking goal for March is 35.  By the end of March, we should be up to 59 blocks for the year, at least. I’m hoping that with Spring coming on, I’ll get a bit more motivated. I have some catching up to do!

Happy stitching to us all!

Even though we spent three weeks on the road this month, I was able to finish 119 blocks. I spent a LOT of time hand piecing while my husband drove. 🙂

  2. Julie A Craven says:

It was a short month, but here in Indiana it has either been raining or snowing so I accomplished more than I thought.
I made 215 little hourglass blocks this month.

  3. Susan Nixon says:

Don’t feel bad. You aren’t alone. I once locked BOTH sets of keys in the car, during a snow storm – and my darling husband got them out for me. =) Husbands are SO useful! Your village looks great – good looks count for something, right? =) I did well in February. 36 blocks as reported HERE.

  4. Cynthia says:

I managed 25 blocks for February. That is nearly a block a day. So let’s hope I can manage 35 blocks for March. It’s looking like it is going to be busy.

  5. Hi Shelly,
24 blocks for February…not as many as I’d hoped, but nothing to be embarrassed about. I do love your house blocks and have been on the edge about joining this Village Sew-along. I may just quietly join in. As you’ve mentioned, these simple blocks would add to the block challenge totals.

  6. Thelma says:

We all make little mistakes like locking our keys in our car when we’re tired and distracted, I hope you went with a nap. My 6 month old daughter was strapped in her carseat in the backseat on one occasion. That was back in the day when police could open car doors, crisis averted. I think you’re going to have a great March, but if all you accomplish is loving those baby goats taking up residence in your living room and adding to your Sunday night stitching, all will be fine.

  7. Danice says:

The Village blocks are too cute. I completed only 10 blocks in February, a bit slow. Hoping to meet the goal for March.

  8. Pam Martin says:

I only completed 33 blocks this month. That finished a Christmas lap quilt and the center of a Judy Niemeyer, paper pieced quilt – only the final border to go and I can mark that as done!

  9. Deanna says:

February brought 41 blocks for me. One little finish, just to make myself feel better (a baby quilt), the Halfway Quilt, and the quilt-that-never-ends-or-at-least-not-for-another-year-and-a-half: Irish Stars. I should finish Halfway this month and, maybe, also another baby quilt. Blocks add up fast.

  10. Shirley Guier says:

I did 12 for February. I’m doing great at getting stuffed finished and quilted though.

  11. denniele says:

Love the story! You must have a lot on your mind….keys were not a huge priority. 😉 124 blocks this month

  12. I had 170 blocks for February. I love your stories about your goats, and the photos are just adorable!

I also locked my son in the car once. Of course, this was before cell phones, so I had to run inside my workplace to get to a phone to call somebody, leaving my 1 1/2 year old out in the car. It was a spring day, so I wasn’t worried about any heat or cold issues, but I was so nervous until we got my car unlocked. My son, on the other hand, was just as content as he could be, just playing with his toys, and happy as a lamb!

  13. Cheryl says:

I completed 52 blocks, that included village blocks.?
    That makes 87 for YTD.

  14. Virginia Smith says:

I have 103 blocks for Feb and now have 3 more project that need quilting. Oh Well that too will get done.

  15. Angela says:

I completed 26 blocks in February.
I’m hoping to kick it up a notch or two in March!

  16. Becky says:

I made 315 bow ties in Feb. Some are for a class project due in a few months. I always consider Feb a short month too. However, this one seemed longer. Hopefully March won’t be as long, or seem to be.

  17. Melody A. says:

You are far from being the world’s biggest idiot for locking your key in your truck, things like that just happen. Don’t be so hard on yourself!! love the house blocks and Hopefully March will be very good for you and all of us. Happy Sewing from Iowa

  18. Beth F says:

Well, again, I hit the goal and then some: 119 for February! I thank the Bernina Triangle QAL–I made a total of 205 blocks for it.
My totals will bottom out in March because it’s time to design & assemble the quilt. I finished blocks on a couple other quilts, so I’ll be assembling those, also.
But we’ll see if I don’t find another project to start…!

  19. Barbara B says:

    126 blocks for February

  20. Karen Edwards says:

I was able to make 102 blocks during February, including some village house blocks. They’re really fun to do and go quickly.

  21. Elaine says:

I guess I missed the Jan reporting. Probably cause I was sick with some stupid virus the whole month. However I did complete 17 blocks for January. February I did much better total of 38 blocks.

  22. Betty K says:

I made 33 blocks for Feb. I made a lot of scrap blocks but that seems to be one thing that I usually do every month. I went and visited a small town quilt show with husband this month. I only bought a couple of yards of fabric so wasn’t bad on the pocketbook. We plan on going back to town and visit a museum later this summer.

  23. Rose Marie says:

I appreciate the response from one other quilter who says she locked her keys in her car with the baby inside. I did that also when I had baby #2 in a car seat and pregnant with baby #3. And a wonderful guy came by who knew how to open car locks with a clothes hanger.
I did 135 blocks this month. Looking back on those old times lets me feel like a real achiever. Not nearly so many forgotten things lately. Baby years were really stressful, weren’t they?

  24. Beverly V. says:

Well I did not get a lot of blocks done. I was hoping to do more, however I did get some more cleaning done and set up my sewing machine in my sewing room. I also found the material I was looking for to do another quilt and gathered supplies for my quilt. I did get there blocks done in February including my cathedral window block.

  25. Susan S. says:

Your little house blocks are so sweet.
Good thing I am keeping an on-going list as I would not have believed that I made 143 blocks this month! Thank you for this challenge. It makes me feel that I am actually accomplishing something. Huge snow storm about to hit, so that will be a good reason to get a jump on March’s blocks.

  26. Meloney says:

53 blocks for me. That’s almost the same as January. Hoping March is higher.

  27. Michelle G says:

I’m happy with my 26 for the month. I tripled last months number!

  28. KT says:

I’ve done that too, and had to go to the dealership to get a new key made–luckily there was one only a few miles away, but I was still late for work.

Love your house blocks! I made 62 blocks in February.

  29. Suelynn Williams says:

22 for February. I finished binding a quilt and am putting a quilt together with the blocks I made. Once I locked my keys in the car three times in one week.

  30. Amanda M. says:

Since calving season started my block production fell. I only created 54 blocks this month but I did create 2 quilts out of blocks on hand. I hope March will be more productive on blocks as I’m working on finishing UFO’s.

  31. Maxine E. says:

I made 112 blocks this month!

  32. Diana says:

Am enjoying your Village blocks. It is tempting to make but I keep thinking of what I have here that needs to get done. Or at least I think it needs to get done!
I did get an even 100 made for February. 60 for the Almost Houndstooth top. That op I did get put together! The 35 blocks for a Fat Quarter pattern. Yes, I enjoyed using the gift certificate. Thanks again Shelly. Also hosting a block challenge for the one yahoo group I participate in. We are making scrappy Nine patch straight furrow blocks from the Quilt’s Cache site. Made 5 so far. We have to the end of April to get these made, then I get the fun part of playing with them and getting them into tops. They will go where they are needed!
We are taking off again tomorrow for the week. Yes, my machine is going along so I can sew in the evenings while Galen sorts through the days pictures!

  33. Wendy says:

Well, this was a more productive month than I thought. I was smart enough to keep a running tab, since I worked on quite a few different projects, not all of them posted on my blog. Put me down for 121. Thanks!

  34. Aileen K says:

Hi Ladies. I had a rough month but still manage to make 50 blocks in purples for the RSC. Woot Woot.
This helped me get motivated again. Thought I lost my Mojo!

I am reorganizing my fabric and refolding them on to the shelves. I found that some fabrics in the sweater tubs that were on the floor of the closet actually had areas where the heat from the slab cooked the color out of the bottom layer of the fabric even though the slab has padding and carpeting on it. Florida sun is something else! I used painters tape to mark the areas so when I go to use this fabric I will see these damaged areas. I had the largest yardage in the bottom of the tubs. Sigh….

I found scraps folded inside my yardage. I am pulling these scraps. Since they are already separated into colors this makes it easier to make blocks in the rainbow color of the month. This will help build my parts department!!!. Win Win.

I also found a lot of blocks that I had forgot I made. I have about 200 -4 patches. A shoe box full of squares already cut, etc. Am excited to make a quilt. Now just have to figure out which one I want to do from my Bucket List! Do you have a Bucket List??

    • randy says:

I had a no buy fabric February. So I went through the stash organizing. I found a complete quilt that only needed one border… Now that made a quick quilt.

  35. Phillis Harding says:

I completed 81 blocks this month. I dug out my village pattern and started on that after seeing your village, I have a lot of scraps to play with and the blocks are fun to do.

  36. Stephanie says:

I worked on another 6 different projects in February for a total of another 193 blocks. There are a few more not counted, because they are not unpacked from a retreat yet. I will count those in March sometime.

  37. randy says:

Since the weather was horrid I broke my record for a month. 94. I have a better method of keeping track day to day so that helped. I got side tracked making cloth boxes for a few days so maybe MARCH will exceed a 100 in a month…

  38. Michele says:

Some impressive numbers!! I had 43 this month- there were a bunch of days with zero blocks because I was hand-sewing, or joining blocks together, but only one day that I didn’t sew at all.

  39. Sherry V. says:

Any forward motion is a success…and your houses are so cute.

I had a good month….42 blocks, one was for the Stash Bee swap and the rest was for my Four Patch Posy.

I was also able to complete a quilt for a banker friend that is having her first baby.

Hoping that March is as good a month.

    Have a lovely day.

  40. Judy S. says:

    Love those little house blocks!
I had 24 blocks this month.

  41. Marlene says:

No quilting this month, only piecing, but most of the piecing was BIG blocks (12 – 18″) with a LOT of tiny subunits. The piecing watchword of the month was precision. March is here and it’s back to quilting, plus several small sewing projects.
Total blocks for February was 74.

  42. Marsha Y. says:

February was a busy month for me. Finished blocks for one large queen quilt and now I am quilting it. Then finished enough blocks for another queen. My total for the month is 123 blocks. Hope March goes better for you!!!

  43. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for February is 26 blocks for my daughter’s silent auction quilt for her school’s fundraiser. I completed 2 unfinished projects — one in January and one in February — sewing the last side of binding on a large quilt and layering and quilting a wallhanging. Now on for March; my plan is to finish one a month this year and it is doable! Thanks for the continued push! ! !

  44. Linda Knight says:

41 blocks for me in February. It’s the best I’ve done in a while and I was sick for a week. Who knows what I could have achieved if I had been well all month.

  45. Sandy Hartman says:

45 blocks for the month of February!

  46. Patricia Hotz says:

I got37 blocks made. Not very many but got some done!!

  47. Hi, Shelly – put down 36 for February for me.
    Thanks!

  48. Mary D says:

I had 32 blocks for February. Sorry to be slow reporting – I counted them up and then got distracted with who knows what. Those house blocks are calling my name. Yours are so adorable!

  49. Johnna Clarke says:

I’m finishing up some of my late mom’s projects, so I got 37 blocks made on those. Then I started one of my own, so I have four on that one. So for February I have a total of 41. Thanks for your encouragement.

  50. Ruth Schafer says:

    39 blocks for February.

  51. Delana Becker says:

February went by too fast so my total for the month is zero.
    Delana

  52. Shelly E Richards says:

20 February blocks for me. That makes my hand total 98 blocks for the year. Not bad for someone who usually only gets to sew once a week.
