Dennis’s Railroad Crossing

Today I’m going to show you a quilt I quilted while I was still living in Nebraska last year, and just never got around to showing you.

It’s another antique quilt top that belonged to Dennis and his wife, Marcia. This is the second antique quilt top I’ve finished for them. You can read about the first one here: The Perkins Fans.

This quilt is not quite as fancy as the first one, but it’s a Railroad Crossing pattern. And with red — I love red! Furthermore, I love red with pink, and it makes me really happy that these blocks have partial pink backgrounds!RRCrossingfull

It’s not pieced quite as perfectly as the first one, either, which made corners a bit difficult, since points were randomly chopped off, etc. But I did the best I could, and I think the quilt has lots of character. The finished quilt measures 70″ x 83″.RRCrossing2

Marcia chose a teal backing for the quilt, to match one of the fabrics in the quilt top, and a yellow binding to match the cornerposts used with the red sashing. I quilted it with a barely off-white thread color, and we chose a cotton batting for an old-fashioned look and feel. RRCrossing3

I quilted a simple flower in each cornerpost, and a squiggle framed by straight lines in each sashing piece. I repeated the flower in the center of each block, and the squiggles in the strips of the blocks, and outlined each patch of the blocks. RRCrossing1

All the points where I had to fudge because they’re cut off on the front show up on the backing, which I’m not too proud of, but what I AM proud of is that another antique top has been finished into a useable quilt now. RRCrossing4

I’m so glad Dennis and Marcia trusted me with their treasure!

I like pink and red together and if you throw in a bit of teal and yellow all the better!!

It is a nice antique quilt and I’ll bet they are glad you got it done for them.
