December 350 Blocks Report

Posted on January 1, 2019 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Did you make one last effort in December to make blocks? Or were you pretty much done in November because the holiday season is simply too busy?

I was a little of both.

I did manage to make 20 more blocks after Christmas, when I took the week off (that never happens, but I was about to burn out). I needed some downtime and time to do things just for myself — or time to do nothing at all, if I wanted. I drank a lot of coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate, and eggnog this past week! I thumbed through magazines, worked on some knitting projects, and did some sewing just for me. And I didn’t even look cross-eyed at the longarm machine — haha!

Alas, the wonderful break is over, and I have to go back to work tomorrow, but I’m gonna enjoy today to the fullest.

Here are some of the blocks I made, trying to use up lots of scraps:

This left me with a total for the year of 519, less than half of what I did last year. Hmm . . .

Now it’s your turn! One last time to report in for this year, and boost your final total. How did you do? Are you happy with what you got done this year? I think I can do better, and that’s what I’ll be trying for in 2019.

I have the Project Page updated with what I know so far. Please report in your final totals by January 7th, because on January 8th, I’ll be announcing this year’s big prize winners, and I want to be sure all the numbers are in! I’m so excited to see what this year’s statistics will be!

Our November prize winner is Wendy O., who already had 418 blocks by the time December started! (I’ll draw the December monthly prize winner at the same time I do the grand prize drawings.)

I want to say a HUGE thank you to all of you who participated and help make this so much fun every year. And to answer some of the questions I’ve been getting — YES! We’re doing it again this year! I’d be doing it for myself anyway — you all might as well come along for the ride. And if we can inspire and encourage each other along the way, it’s all for the better. Thanks so much for joining in!

I’ll be launching the next one on January 11th, after I’ve announced all the prize winners from 2018 and done some housekeeping to clean up the web pages and get ready for the next one. So let me know if you want in. (You can let me know anytime, or you can formally sign up on the 11th with the launch post.)

Happy New Year!

I wish us all a healthy, happy, productive, and prosperous 2019! Thanks so much for being a part of my little online world. I appreciate each and every one of you.

Looking forward to signing up for this 2019 year. I only found out about it yesterday and was eager to know if it was continueing this year. Thank you!

  3. Shirley Guier says:

I have to do better keeping track next year. I was thinking I had probably 10 blocks for december and then remember 2 wall hangings I made that had 20 blocks each! Give me 50 for december and who knows how many I forgot about!

  4. Louise says:

I am in for 2019. I finished 22 blocks in December, which is 22 more than I thought I would be able to make. Having family in town and having surgery sure has cut into my sewing time.

  5. Betty K says:

I completed 414 for 2018. My worse year but also a bad health year for me. I am hoping I can meet in the middle and do at least 600 blocks for 2019.

  6. denniele says:

Happy New Year, Shelly! Add 194 blocks for me. That vintage top I have been working on for months and was finally able to count was almost 100! Please add me to the 2019 list! Thanks!!

  7. Christi Bentley says:

I would like to join in for 2019!

  8. Phillis Harding says:

I have been on a roll this month; 373 blocks done. This finished 6 lap quilts and 2 twin sized which were gifted, so 8 quilts finished this month. I am looking forward to continuing in 2019.

  9. I was able to complete 29 blocks for December. Not as good as last year but I am looking forward to improving my total in 2019.

  10. Mary D. says:

I have been working on the Bonnie Hunter mystery and have a lot of units for blocks, but no blocks to be counted there until at least January. I did, however, manage to do 45 for other projects. I think that puts me somewhere around 401 for the year.
I’m joining in for 2019. I’m going to challenge myself to up this year’s total by 200. Yikes!

  11. Sandy says:

I started 30 blocks (chain piecing) but didn’t finish 1!….I’m all set up for January 2019 though!🤓 Thanks for the monthly challenges. Pushed myself towards finishing several UFOs.🙌🏻 This is the year they’ll come together!😁

  12. Happy New Year!!!
I was able to make 30 blocks in December.
I think I did okay this year considering I tried to finish UFO’s. I just dug out 4 totes with UFO’s. I am giving them a serious once over and deciding whether to finish for myself, finish and donate or just give it away.
I have a quilt retreat to go to in February so I am kitting up what I want to keep and work on. There are some oldies but goodies in there. One that I love from 2010 but I got stuck and didn’t know how to put the blocks together so I would like it. Its coming with me. 50 opinions may help me get it to flimsy state or get me to donate it! LOL!
    Happy Sewing
    Aileen

  13. KT says:

Only finished 14 blocks in December–too busy finishing up quilts!! (And I’m still finishing the last one–gave it to my mom unfinished–had machine problems that derailed me)

  14. Maxine E says:

I didn’t sew any blocks. But I am in the process of making blocks with Bonnie Hunter’s mystery QAL. I am in for 2019! Thank you! Happy New Year!

  15. Cheryl says:

Happy New Year!!! I’m in for the new year.

  16. Bonnie Epperson says:

I want to join for 2019. I know I will not meet the 350 goal but half that number is what I want to challenge myself with in my first yeasr on this challenge.

  17. Angela says:

Happy New Year to you too!
I didn’t complete any blocks in December. My sewing machine was packed away (and still is) and I was limited to handwork projects.

Please count me in for next year; I’m planning on a very productive quilting year! 😊

  18. Put another 10 to my total. I’m in for 2019. It’s very motivating doing this challenge. Thank you, Shelly.

  19. Randy Menninghaus says:

    26 from me

  20. Amanda M. says:

I created 106 blocks for December for 6 different quilts but I fell short in getting 3 quilts done for Christmas. I’m in for this challenge for 2019! Thank you for the inspiration!

  21. I made two blocks in December. I rarely add much to my total after October, just too busy, so I try to get ahead in the other months. I’m ok with not making 350, I was close and still find this challenge a good motivator to get me into the sewing room. Thanks again, and count me in for next year!

  22. Susan says:

December Block Report was 35, and brings my total for the year to 445, so I’m happy with that! Thanks for running this, and I WILL be in again in 2019. It’s a habit, don’t stop me now. LOL Since 2013, there’s only one year I didn’t make the goal, and I was pretty close that year, too.

  23. Danice says:

Happy New Year to you also. I completed only 19 blocks in December. Holidays and all of that, as you mentioned. Looking forward to 350 in 2019.

  24. Suelynn Williams says:

None for me in December. I would like to continue in the 2019 challenge.

  25. Sue Norfleet says:

Made pillow cases for Christmas presents and also sewed hundreds of “units” for Bonnie Hunters Good Fortune mystery quilt that will soon turn in to blocks. Managed to clear the cutting table and wrangle a pile in the tub under the table.

  26. Stephanie says:

I drew a line under my UFO list on Dec 7, and spent the rest of the month making QAYG string blocks to send to a friend for her charity work. 160 of them, which made only the tiniest dent in my strings!

  27. Stephanie says:

Oops, meant to add count me in for 2019 as well.

  28. Judy S. says:

I made 69 blocks in December. Pretty good for me. I’ll play again in 2019.

  29. Wendy says:

Only 16 for me. Happy New Year, Shelly!

  30. Beverly Vendt says:

Happy New Year to you as well.
    I am in for 2019. I didn’t get any
blocks for December made. I am
hoping to get the sewing machine
set up in my guest room and be able
to see in January and February.

  31. Delana Becker says:

I only made one block in December. Sigh!!! Please count me in for 2019. Hopefully I will get more sewing time in.

  32. Melody says:

Happy new year! I would love to be added for 2019 please. Thanks 😊

  33. Tonia says:

90! A little catch up! I got my Christmas sewing done early so my shop time was put to trying to finish up bits–and it turns out it was mighty productive.

  34. Linda Knight says:

December turned out to be my best month with 320 blocks finished. I was totally surprised! I will be participating again in 2019.

  35. Clara Chandler says:

29 blocks to add for December. I’ll join again in 2019 because it’s a good motivator to watch the numbers grow. Happy New Year, Shelly!

  36. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for December is 48…better and fired up for 2019!

  37. Elaine says:

Happy New Year to all I didn’t make many blocks, only 16. But I am counting all the bowl cozy’s and potholders I made so a total of 36 for December. Count in in for 2019. Thanks

  38. Andrea O'Brien says:

I forgot to enter my blocks for November, so my total for the last two months is 194. I made some other things like pin cushions and some home dec items, as well as several longarm projects, but those aren’t counted. It was a very busy last two months!

  39. Susan says:

    I’m in for 2019

  40. Barbara B says:

I completed 6 9 blocks in December for a grand total of 902 in 2018. Happy and Blessed New Year

  41. Diana S says:

I managed 40 blocks in December which was pretty good since it was a busy month for me. 24 blocks for a log cabin baby quilt and 16 blocks for the Kaffe BOM. And i did manage to bind 4 small quilts while we were in Rockport doing some birding! All in all happy with this years results!

  42. Susan s says:

Ok I gave it a good go… and held it together most of 2018 then in November outdid myself and did 391 blocks and couldn’t post the numbers…then totally lost count in December. Can think of one quilt I forgot to record in November but it’s already living elsewhere so will guesstimate 20 blocks for it and December and chalk the rest up to “will try harder” to keep up and with it next year!!! Happy New years everyone and looking forward to doing this again.

  43. Christine in Los Angeles says:

Are there block-size limits, to take into consideration, or is a 5″ Double Wedding Ring equal to a 12″ 4patch?

  44. Karen E says:

I made 132 blocks in December for a YTD total of 1641. Happy New Year, Shelley, and everyone else who’s keeping track of their blocks!

  45. katie z. says:

119 for 1677 (or thereabouts, I suppose. Let me know if my math has gone haywire again).

    https://zanasninis.blogspot.com/2018/12/2018-350-block-challenge-in-review.html

I’m looking forward to 2019, but quite confident the numbers will fall!

  46. Marsha Y. says:

Very busy month, but I did get 26 blocks made. Working on more complicated blocks right now so takes a while to finish just one!

  47. Darlene says:

I finished 6 placemats and 4 fun hexie potholders so a total of 10 for me. So glad to hear you will be hosting next year! I am excited to be challenged once again.
Thank youShelly for taking the time out of your busy life to inspire us and challenge us with your love of hand work!

  48. Pam says:

I made parts to the Bonnie Hunter mystery, but not counting those yet because they are parts of blocks. I don’t think I completed any blocks for December. All my binding is done and several blocks were made in early January. I should have a good count in January. Happy New Year!

  49. Sherry V. says:

    Happy New Year!

Definitely count me in for 2019. I hope to do better. . .but anything is better than nothing. LOL

For December I got a total of 20 blocks done. 16 were for a pattern test I volunteered for, 1 was for a Stash Bee swap, and the rest were from a Polaroid Block swap I was in (they are little blocks so I counted the number that would make a 12″ block as one block. . so I got 3 blocks worth).

Thank you for hosting this. . .it is fun to see how much work we can all get done.

  50. Meloney says:

I did 2050 blocks in 2018. Many were UFOs and I don’t count until ALL the quilt is complete. 🙂
    It was a good year.

  51. Meloney says:

I forgot to say I wanted to join in for 2019.

  52. Marlene Clausen says:

Sorry for the late report. Have been in bed w/the flu for a week. 12 more blocks in December. Nine of those are in a completed quilt!! Whoohoo. Love when I make blocks AND make the quilt w/no break in between. I really need to do that more often. My on-going goal for 2019 is to finish any UFO from any previous year of any size before I start anything new. Please sign me up for the 2019 – 360.

  53. Patricia Hotz says:

I didn’t get any sewing done this month. i’m hoping Jan will be better.

  54. kay beach says:
