A free quilt block pattern.

Our guild does a monthly block pattern among the members. Each month, someone presents a pattern, the members who desire to do so each make a block (or two), and the next month, the blocks are either raffled off or collected for a certain project.

This month it was my turn to present the block challenge.

I’ve been a tad obsessed with the Churn Dash block lately (I’ll show you why a bit later). I’ve made hundreds of them in a couple different sizes, based on a 3×3 grid.

However, for a set of custom commission quilts I’ve been working on, I decided to play with it on a 5×5 grid, and I came up with this:

This is a 10″ finished version of a Churn Dash variation.

Simply by changing the color placement within the block, you can get all sorts of looks for this one block.

Just check these out!

I just made all of mine all sorts of scrappy. If I didn’t want to make all my center squares the same, I didn’t!

Furthermore, it uses 2 1/2″ squares and 5″ squares, both of which I have in abundance in my pre-cut scrap bins, so it was super easy to just pull out some squares and stitch these up.

When setting these together, you could just set them right next to each other, or you could add sashing with cornerposts, and get a secondary design. Now I’m thinking I may have to make an entire quilt full of these just to play around with the various layout options. What have I gotten myself into?

Anyway, since I had to write up the pattern for my fellow guild members, I’ve decided to just add it to my Free Patterns page and offer it to all of you as well. It’s a free PDF download available HERE. Enjoy!

And I’d love to see what you make, if you use the pattern — don’t be shy — send me some pictures!

I am just not as creative as you are – there is just no way I would have been able to think of all the different possibilities for this block. Thanks for the block pattern.

I also like churn dash blocks, but I am going to show great restraint and not add to this ever growing list of UFOs. As is I am starting your BOM on Sunday from the KC Star. Are yoy excited? I am! And just think, I knew you before you were famous. Hymmmm you know, actually looking at this list of UFOs, you are responsible either directly or indirectly for six of them!!!!

I’m with Cindy. I am starting another Shelly quilt- her Hexie quilt and starting a new quilt with fabric I got from Shelly and I an quilting a Shelly quilt as soon as I have batting and then there is the Rose of Sharon Sampler which really must be started this year without fail. No other challenges for me. But then they really are so interesting and you say it uses 2.5 and 5 ” squares…………..well, okay maybe. Someone just gave me a set of charm squares. Sigh. I’ll never get out alive.

Okay. Here is my count for January 2015. I did 3 baby quilts for a total of 90 blocks. I won’t be doing anymore for January. Hope all stay safe for this massive storm we have coming up the East Coast.
