Creativity Challenge #15

How did last week go?

Did you stake your claim to a creative space, even if just a small one?

I’m happy to report that I’m set up. It took me one entire day of sorting, chucking, cleaning, and rearranging, but I got the countertop in my office cleaned off, and for now, I’ll also be using it as my place to do art.

mailingcounter

This side of my office houses all my mailing supplies. Inventory is stored on those open shelves underneath, and in the closet in the office (which also needs a good mucking out).

I fixed a shelf on the bookcase to the left for my sketchbooks, and gathered all my pens into little cup holders, and there’s one basket underneath that holds extra art supplies as well. I have a bar stool the perfect height that I can sit on in front of it when I want to sit down to work. I think this is gonna help a lot. An uncluttered space will make me much more productive! And I found my crayons!!! Woohoo!!!

And now that I have this lovely area, I can use it, so we’re on to this week’s task:

Divide a page into small sections and make daily drawings in the sections

Take a page in your sketchbook, and draw boxes to divide it into small sections. Mine are about 2″ square, but they’re very rough, so any size will do — I didn’t measure, just roughly drew them.

Each of these little drawings takes hardly any time, and that makes them seem doable. I’ve got a crazy busy few weeks coming up ahead of me, and I don’t want to stop being creative, and this is something I can handle. One little bitty tiny drawing every day.

Feel free to add color, and experiment with different drawing utensils, too. And save what you draw, because your little drawings might come in handy for future challenges.

Definitely feel free to do more if you want to and have the time. I’ll be happy to get one a day done for now, but at least it will keep me being creative every day in some small way.

My friend, Terri, draws every day, and last year (I think) she had calendar pages that she filled with her little daily drawings, and they were spectacular! You can see more of Terri’s work on her web page — I’m a huge fan!

This year, she’s doing weekly series drawings, and they’re fabulous. Just in the time I’ve known her, she’s gotten exponentially better and better, and do you know why? Because she does it every day! That’s the point I want to get to — I want to do some art every day. Right now, I’m not to that point, but I’m working in that direction.

I’m also a big admirer of Jamie Fingal’s sketchbooks (and all of her work, really — she’s very inspiring). If you follow her on Instagram, she shows pictures of her sketchbook, and I can’t get enough of just staring at them! As luck would have it, she just posted this week about her little drawings right HERE. I wish I could draw like that! And . . . I’m going to keep at it, and do it more often, and I may just get better my ownself.

Here’s a quote from the renowned comic book artist, Ken Lashley, that struck a chord with me:

“We’re afraid of the things we don’t do well, so we just exclude them — NO! Attack them!”

So I’m going to attack my drawing and force myself to get better. I’m starting with simply doing MORE, and I hope to graduate into doing stuff I avoid because I imagine it’s difficult (when it probably really isn’t). What about you?

  1. Hi,
I think I can handles this one. I’ve also posted my coloring organized Creativity Box. By the way, love your Tile Quilt. I’m going to try this one out. Have a great day!

I follow your friend Terri’s blog occasionally and always come away inspired about something. I had to order new checks and I chose something for the art on the checks that resembled Terri’s recent nature pictures. I write to be creative – not draw. I need to do more writing.

I am going to try and do this. I have my book squares drawn off. I think I will be creative in quilting designs. Maybe I can come up with something else to quilt.

  4. Hi Shelly,
I’ve got my 6 little drawings done. Have a great day!
